    Executives Political Connection and Over-investment in New Energy CompaniesEmpirical Evidence from China\u27s Capital Market

    Establishing links between business and government is a common phenomenon in the world. Using data of new energy companies listed in Shenzhen and Shanghai Stock Exchangethe paper examines the relationship between political connection and firms’ over-investment. We find that executives political connection is a significant promotion of firms’ over-investment; the political connection is divided into the central- and local-level, and further tests find that political connections with different levels have no significant impact on firms’ over-investment. Our findings provide an empirical evidence for strengthening the Governance Reform of the government

    Land-Atmosphere Interaction in the Southwestern Karst Region of China

    Land-atmosphere interaction in the southwestern Karst region of China was investigated from two aspects: response of land cover to climate change and climatic effects of Karst rocky desertification. The first part focused on the temporal-spatial variation of growing-season normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and its relationship with climate variables. The relationships between growing-season NDVI with temperature and precipitation were both positive, indicating its limiting role on the distribution and dynamic of vegetation cover in the study area. The second part was designed to investigate whether the changed vegetation cover and land surface processes in the Karst regions was capable of modifying the summer climate simulation over East Asia. It was shown that land desertification resulted in the reduced net radiation and evaporation in the degraded areas. The East Asian summer monsoon was weakened after land degradation. Such circulation differences favored the increase in moisture flux and clouds, and thereby causing more precipitation in southeast coastal areas. Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that vegetation cover in Karst region was sensitive to climate change at larger scale, and on the other hand, there was significant feedback of vegetation cover change to regional climate by altering water and energy balance

    Along-strike segmentation of the South China Sea margin imposed by inherited pre-rift basement structures

    Multibeam bathymetric, seismic and borehole data are used to investigate a large-scale strike-slip structure, the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone, in the northern South China Sea. This fault zone comprises NW- to NE-striking faults and negative flower structures that were generated by oblique extensional displacement. Notably, the interpreted data reveals that the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone was active during the Cenozoic, recording intense magmatism, and accommodating significant intraplate deformation during progressive continental rifting and ocean spreading. It bounds two distinct crustal segments and played a significant role in segmenting the northern margin of the South China Sea. The geometry of faults and strata within the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone also controlled local sediment routing and depocentre evolution during the Cenozoic. As basement and syn-rift structures change markedly across the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone, we propose this structure to be inherited from a lithospheric-scale fault zone separating the Mesozoic arc from forearc-related terrains. We therefore stress the importance of pre-existing structures in the development of rifted margins, with the example provided by the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone having profound implications for palaeogeographic reconstructions in the South China Sea. At present, the Baiyun-Liwan Fault Zone is incised by the Pearl River Canyon and eroded by recurrent submarine landslides, forming a major area of sediment bypass towards the abyssal plain

    Lineage-specific accelerated sequences underlying primate evolution

    Understanding the mechanisms underlying phenotypic innovation is a key goal of comparative genomic studies. Here, we investigated the evolutionary landscape of lineage-specific accelerated regions (LinARs) across 49 primate species. Genomic comparison with dense taxa sampling of primate species significantly improved LinAR detection accuracy and revealed many novel human LinARs associated with brain development or disease. Our study also yielded detailed maps of LinARs in other primate lineages that may have influenced lineage-specific phenotypic innovation and adaptation. Functional experimentation identified gibbon LinARs, which could have participated in the developmental regulation of their unique limb structures, whereas some LinARs in the Colobinae were associated with metabolite detoxification which may have been adaptive in relation to their leaf-eating diet. Overall, our study broadens knowledge of the functional roles of LinARs in primate evolution

    An Abundant Dysfunctional Apolipoprotein A1 in Human Atheroma

    Recent studies have indicated that high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and their major structural protein, apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1), recovered from human atheroma are dysfunctional and are extensively oxidized by myeloperoxidase (MPO). In vitro oxidation of either apoA1 or HDL particles by MPO impairs their cholesterol acceptor function. Here, using phage display affinity maturation, we developed a high-affinity monoclonal antibody that specifically recognizes both apoA1 and HDL that have been modified by the MPO-H2O2-Cl− system. An oxindolyl alanine (2-OH-Trp) moiety at Trp72 of apoA1 is the immunogenic epitope. Mutagenesis studies confirmed a critical role for apoA1 Trp72 in MPO-mediated inhibition of the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1)-dependent cholesterol acceptor activity of apoA1 in vitro and in vivo. ApoA1 containing a 2-OH-Trp72 group (oxTrp72-apoA1) is in low abundance within the circulation but accounts for 20% of the apoA1 in atherosclerosis-laden arteries. OxTrp72-apoA1 recovered from human atheroma or plasma is lipid poor, virtually devoid of cholesterol acceptor activity and demonstrated both a potent proinflammatory activity on endothelial cells and an impaired HDL biogenesis activity in vivo. Elevated oxTrp72-apoA1 levels in subjects presenting to a cardiology clinic (n = 627) were associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Circulating oxTrp72-apoA1 levels may serve as a way to monitor a proatherogenic process in the artery wall
