    Senior High School EFL Students’ L2 Motivational Configurations and Learning Outcomes: A Person-centered Approach

    This study utilized a person-centered approach to explore senior high school EFL students’ motivations and their learning outcomes. Cluster analysis extracted four second language (L2) motivational configurations among the 922 participants: 1) the High Motive group which is characterized by high amount of L2 motivation, 2) the Performance-focused group which is characterized by low intrinsic motivation and a focus on examination scores, 3) the Socioculture-focused group characterized by low intrinsic motivation but an interest in the L2 culture, 4) and the Low Motive group characterized by low motivation. It was found that a good quality group was absent from this particular EFL context. The High Motive group and the Performance-focused group outperformed the other two groups in terms of the L2 learning outcomes. Integrative motivation emerged from the person-centered approach. Contextual factors such as the economic situation and influence of Confucianism were discussed in relation to the results.     Reclassifying the SILL: Validation Using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis

    For decades, the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (SILL) has been extensively used in the previous studies on foreign/second language (L2) learners’ learning strategies, which have yielded a substantial amount of empirical findings in the field of L2. The conventional classification of the SILL questionnaire, however, has not gone without challenges, especially given the tremendous diversity of the EFL context. In this study, we revisited the SILL and reclassified the language learning strategies in this popular questionnaire. The data were collected in an EFL context in which a total of 282 Taiwanese senior high school students filled out the SILL questionnaire. Validity was the paramount concern during reclassifying and was demonstrated via exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmation factor analysis (CFA). EFA was first used to extract factors from the SILL, which helps to conceptualize the new classification. CFA was then performed to confirm the exploratory model. At the end of the study, the SILL was reclassified into the 6 dimensions which were labeled as: 1) Social Strategies, 2) Metacognitive Strategies (Type I), 3) Metacognitive Strategies (Type II), 4) Affective Strategies, 5) Cognitive Strategies and 6) Memory Strategies.     Developing the dielectric mechanisms of polyetherimide/multiwalled carbon nanotube/(Ba0.8Sr0.2)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 composites

    Various amounts of multiwalled carbon nanotubes [MWNTs] were embedded into polyetherimide [PEI] to form PEI/MWNT composites, and their dielectric properties were measured at 1 MHz. The Lichtenecker mixing rule was used to find a reasonable dielectric constant for the MWNTs used in this study. The dielectric constants of the developed composites were significantly increased, and the loss tangents were significantly decreased as 2.0 wt.% (Ba0.8Sr0.2)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 ceramic powder [BSTZ] was added to the PEI/MWNTs to form PEI/MWNT/BSTZ composites. The Lichtenecker and Yamada mixing rules were used to predict the dielectric constants of the PEI/MWNT and PEI/MWNT/BSTZ composites. Equivalent electrical conduction models of both composites were established using the two mixing rules. In addition, the theoretical bases of the two mixing rules were used to explain the measured results for the PEI/MWNT and PEI/BSTZ/MWNT composites

    Alterations in IL-6, IL-8, GM-CSF. TNF-α, and IFN-γ Release by Peripheral Mononuclear Cells in Patients with Active Vitiligo

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the cellular and humoral immune components in the pathogenesis of vitiligo vulgaris. By using cytokines as indicators of peripheral mononuclear cell (MNC) function, we compared the effects of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and purified IgG on MNCs derived from patients suffering from active vitiligo with those from normal controls. The results revealed (i) a significant increase in spontaneous production of 11-6 and IL-8 in patients; (ii) PHA, purified IgG from patients (IgG-anti-MC), or IgG from normal controls (N-IgG) induced a significant increase in IL-6 but diminished GM-CSF, TNF-α, and IFN-γ release in patients; and (iii) IgG-anti-MC brought about a significantly higher stimulatory effect on IL-1β and IFN-γ production than N-IgG in normal controls. Immunologically, IL-6 can enhance melanocyte ICAM-1 expression, which may increase leukocyte-melanocyte attachment and cause melanocyte damage in vitiligo. A decrease in GM-CSF (an intrinsic growth factor for melanocyte) production may retard recovery from vitiligo by checking the proliferation of surviving melanocytes. A significant decrease in TNF-α and IFN-γ production may partially explain the reduced inflammatory reaction in vitiliginous lesions. That IgG-anti-MC stimulates an increase in IL-1β and IFN-γ production in controls suggests that IgG-anti-MC may play a role in melanocyte destruction mediated by monocytes

    Isolated tracheal injury after whiplash

    AbstractWhiplash, a sudden acceleration–deceleration movement that can cause diverse symptoms such as neck pain, cervicogenic headache, restricted neck movement, tingling of the arms (central cord syndrome), and dizziness. However, laryngotracheal injuries after whiplash are extremely rare. We report the case of a 25-year-old Taiwanese female who presented to the emergency department with severe posterior midline neck pain after a rear-end motorcycle collision. Her C-spine X-ray showed no definite fracture; furthermore, her neck noncontrast-enhanced CT scan revealed paratracheal free air. She was discharged uneventfully after a 12-h observation period. Laryngotracheal injuries after whiplash, a hyperextension–hyperflexion movement, are potentially life-threatening and could lead to airway obstruction. Such injuries should not be overlooked. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of isolated laryngotracheal injury after whiplash

    Machine Learning-Based Genome-Wide Salivary DNA Methylation Analysis for Identification of Noninvasive Biomarkers in Oral Cancer Diagnosis

    This study aims to examine the feasibility of ML-assisted salivary-liquid-biopsy platforms using genome-wide methylation analysis at the base-pair and regional resolution for delineating oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). A nested cohort of patients with OSCC and OPMDs was randomly selected from among patients with oral mucosal diseases. Saliva samples were collected, and DNA extracted from cell pellets was processed for reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing. Reads with a minimum of 10Ă— coverage were used to identify differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCs) and 100 bp regions (DMRs). The performance of eight ML models and three feature-selection methods (ANOVA, MRMR, and LASSO) were then compared to determine the optimal biomarker models based on DMCs and DMRs. A total of 1745 DMCs and 105 DMRs were identified for detecting OSCC. The proportion of hypomethylated and hypermethylated DMCs was similar (51% vs. 49%), while most DMRs were hypermethylated (62.9%). Furthermore, more DMRs than DMCs were annotated to promoter regions (36% vs. 16%) and more DMCs than DMRs were annotated to intergenic regions (50% vs. 36%). Of all the ML models compared, the linear SVM model based on 11 optimal DMRs selected by LASSO had a perfect AUC, recall, specificity, and calibration (1.00) for OSCC detection. Overall, genome-wide DNA methylation techniques can be applied directly to saliva samples for biomarker discovery and ML-based platforms may be useful in stratifying OSCC during disease screening and monitoring

    The new and rapid advancement in the complexity of biologics drug discovery has been driven by a deeper understanding of biological systems combined with innovative new therapeutic modalities, paving the way to breakthrough therapies for previously intractable diseases. These exciting times in biomedical innovation require the development of novel technologies to facilitate the sophisticated, multifaceted, high-paced workflows necessary to support modern large molecule drug discovery. A high-level aspiration is a true integration of "lab-on-a-chip" methods that vastly miniaturize cellulmical experiments could transform the speed, cost, and success of multiple workstreams in biologics development. Several microscale bioprocess technologies have been established that incrementally address these needs, yet each is inflexibly designed for a very specific process thus limiting an integrated holistic application. A more fully integrated nanoscale approach that incorporates manipulation, culture, analytics, and traceable digital record keeping of thousands of single cells in a relevant nanoenvironment would be a transformative technology capable of keeping pace with today's rapid and complex drug discovery demands. The recent advent of optical manipulation of cells using light-induced electrokinetics with micro- and nanoscale cell culture is poised to revolutionize both fundamental and applied biological research. In this review, we summarize the current state of the art for optical manipulation techniques and discuss emerging biological applications of this technology. In particular, we focus on promising prospects for drug discovery workflows, including antibody discovery, bioassay development, antibody engineering, and cell line development, which are enabled by the automation and industrialization of an integrated optoelectronic single-cell manipulation and culture platform. Continued development of such platforms will be well positioned to overcome many of the challenges currently associated with fragmented, low-throughput bioprocess workflows in biopharma and life science research

    Total white blood cell count or neutrophil count predict ischemic stroke events among adult Taiwanese: report from a community-based cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Evidence about whether white blood cell (WBC) or its subtypes can act as a biomarker to predict the ischemic stroke events in the general population is scanty, particularly in Asian populations. The aim of this study is to establish the predictive ability of total WBC count or subtypes for long-term ischemic stroke events in the cohort population in Taiwan. METHODS: The Chin-Shan Community Cohort Study began from 1990 to 2007 by recruiting 1782 men and 1814 women of Chinese ethnicity. Following a total of 3416 participants free from ischemic stroke events at baseline for a median of 15.9 years; we documented 187 new incident cases. RESULTS: The multivariate relative risk for the comparison of the participants in the fifth and first WBC count quintiles was 1.67 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02–2.73; P for trend=0.03), and the corresponding relative risk for neutrophil count was 1.93 (95% CI, 1.13–3.29; P for trend=0.02). The discriminative ability by WBC and neutrophil counts were similar (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.600 for adding WBC, 0.610 for adding neutrophils, 0.595 for traditional risk factor model). In addition, the net reclassification improvement (NRI) values between the neutrophil and white blood cell count models were not significant (NRI, =-2.60%, P=0.35), indicating the similar discrimination performance for both WBC and neutrophil counts.
