    IFN-gamma is associated with risk of Schistosoma japonicum infection in China.

    Before the start of the schistosomiasis transmission season, 129 villagers resident on a Schistosoma japonicum-endemic island in Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province, 64 of whom were stool-positive for S. japonicum eggs by the Kato method and 65 negative, were treated with praziquantel. Forty-five days later the 93 subjects who presented for follow-up were all stool-negative. Blood samples were collected from all 93 individuals. S. japonicum soluble worm antigen (SWAP) and soluble egg antigen (SEA) stimulated IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-gamma production in whole-blood cultures were measured by ELISA. All the subjects were interviewed nine times during the subsequent transmission season to estimate the intensity of their contact with potentially infective snail habitats, and the subjects were all re-screened for S. japonicum by the Kato method at the end of the transmission season. Fourteen subjects were found to be infected at that time. There was some indication that the risk of infection might be associated with gender (with females being at higher risk) and with the intensity of water contact, and there was evidence that levels of SEA-induced IFN-gamma production were associated with reduced risk of infection

    Unification of Radio Galaxies and Their Accretion/Jet Properties

    We investigate the relation between black hole mass, M_bh, and jet power, Q_jet, for a sample of BL Lacs and radio quasars. We find that BL Lacs are separated from radio quasars by the FR I/II dividing line in M_bh-Q_jet plane, which strongly supports the unification scheme of FR I/BL Lac and FR II/radio quasar. The Eddington ratio distribution of BL Lacs and radio quasars exhibits a bimodal nature with a rough division at L_bol/L_Edd~0.01, which imply that they may have different accretion modes. We calculate the jet power extracted from advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and find that it require dimensionless angular momentum of black hole j~0.9-0.99 to reproduce the dividing line between FR I/II or BL Lac/radio quasar if dimensionless accretion rate mdot=0.01 is adopted, which is required by above bimodal distribution of Eddington ratios.     The role of social status and testosterone in human conspicuous consumption

    Conspicuous consumption refers to the phenomenon where individuals purchase goods for signalling social status, rather than for its inherent functional value. This study (nā€‰=ā€‰166 male participants) investigated how the outcome of a social competition influenced conspicuous consumption, and its association with competition-induced testosterone reactivity. Winning a competition increased both explicit and implicit preferences for higher-status vs. lower-status products, using both natural stimuli (prestigious cars) and laboratory-tagged stimuli of matched value (university T-shirts). Competition also influenced behaviour in an Ultimatum Game, such that winners were more likely to reject unfair offers. Competition outcomes had no discernible influence upon salivary testosterone levels, and neither basal testosterone levels nor testosterone reactivity induced by competition predicted the conspicuous consumption measures.     Sorafenib dose escalation is not uniformly associated with blood pressure elevations in normotensive patients with advanced malignancies.

    Hypertension after treatment with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor inhibitors is associated with superior treatment outcomes for advanced cancer patients. To determine whether increased sorafenib doses cause incremental increases in blood pressure (BP), we measured 12-h ambulatory BP in 41 normotensive advanced solid tumor patients in a randomized dose-escalation study. After 7 days' treatment (400ā€‰mg b.i.d.), mean diastolic BP (DBP) increased in both study groups. After dose escalation, group A (400ā€‰mg t.i.d.) had marginally significant further increase in 12-h mean DBP (P = 0.053), but group B (600ā€‰mg b.i.d.) did not achieve statistically significant increases (P = 0.25). Within groups, individuals varied in BP response to sorafenib dose escalation, but these differences did not correlate with changes in steady-state plasma sorafenib concentrations. These findings in normotensive patients suggest BP is a complex pharmacodynamic biomarker of VEGF inhibition. Patients have intrinsic differences in sensitivity to sorafenib's BP-elevating effects

    Estimating black hole masses of blazars

    Estimating black hole masses of blazars is still a big challenge. Because of the contamination of jets, using the previously suggested size -- continuum luminosity relation can overestimate the broad line region (BLR) size and black hole mass for radio-loud AGNs, including blazars. We propose a new relation between the BLR size and HĪ²H_{\beta} emission line luminosity and present evidences for using it to get more accurate black hole masses of radio-loud AGNs. For extremely radio-loud AGNs such as blazars with weak/absent emission lines, we suggest to use the fundamental plane relation of their elliptical host galaxies to estimate the central velocity dispersions and black hole masses, if their velocity dispersions are not known but the host galaxies can be mapped. The black hole masses of some well-known blazars, such as OJ 287, AO 0235+164 and 3C 66B, are obtained using these two methods and the M - Ļƒ\sigma relation.     Strong shear softening induced by superionic hydrogen in Earth's inner core

    Geophysical and geochemical evidence suggests that Earth's core is predominantly made of iron (or iron-nickel alloy) with several percent of light elements. However, Earth's solid inner core transmits shear waves at a much lower velocity than expected from mineralogical models that are consistent with geochemical constraints. Here we investigate the effect of hydrogen on the elastic properties of iron and iron-silicon alloys using ab initio molecular dynamic simulations. We find that these H-bearing alloys maintain a superionic state under inner-core conditions and that their shear moduli exhibit a strong shear softening due to the superionic effect, with a corresponding reduction in VS. Several hcp-iron-silicon-hydrogen compositions can explain the observed density, VP, VS, and Poisson's ratio of the inner core simultaneously. Our results indicate that hydrogen is a significant component of the Earth's core, and that it may contain at least four ocean masses of water. This indicates that the Earth may have accreted wet and obtained its water from chondritic and/or nebular materials before or during core formation
