    Helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections on the nucleon

    We examine the energy dependence of single-meson photoproduction as it contributes to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. For photon energies above approximately 1 GeV, through the full resonance region, this contribution dominates the proton sum rule integral. Over the same energy region, our single-pion contribution to the neutron sum rule also qualitatively follows a recent set of GDH data. The predicted neutral-pion contribution to the neutron sum rule is nearly zero above 1 GeV in this result. The SAID and Mainz (MAID) results are very different for a number of observables over this energy region.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figur

    Remodelling of human atrial K+ currents but not ion channel expression by chronic β-blockade

    Chronic β-adrenoceptor antagonist (β-blocker) treatment in patients is associated with a potentially anti-arrhythmic prolongation of the atrial action potential duration (APD), which may involve remodelling of repolarising K+ currents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic β-blockade on transient outward, sustained and inward rectifier K+ currents (ITO, IKSUS and IK1) in human atrial myocytes and on the expression of underlying ion channel subunits. Ion currents were recorded from human right atrial isolated myocytes using the whole-cell-patch clamp technique. Tissue mRNA and protein levels were measured using real time RT-PCR and Western blotting. Chronic β-blockade was associated with a 41% reduction in ITO density: 9.3 ± 0.8 (30 myocytes, 15 patients) vs 15.7 ± 1.1 pA/pF (32, 14), p < 0.05; without affecting its voltage-, time- or rate dependence. IK1 was reduced by 34% at −120 mV (p < 0.05). Neither IKSUS, nor its increase by acute β-stimulation with isoprenaline, was affected by chronic β-blockade. Mathematical modelling suggested that the combination of ITO- and IK1-decrease could result in a 28% increase in APD90. Chronic β-blockade did not alter mRNA or protein expression of the ITO pore-forming subunit, Kv4.3, or mRNA expression of the accessory subunits KChIP2, KChAP, Kvβ1, Kvβ2 or frequenin. There was no reduction in mRNA expression of Kir2.1 or TWIK to account for the reduction in IK1. A reduction in atrial ITO and IK1 associated with chronic β-blocker treatment in patients may contribute to the associated action potential prolongation, and this cannot be explained by a reduction in expression of associated ion channel subunits

    Model dependence of single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data

    Model dependence of multipole analysis has been explored through energy-dependent and single-energy fits to pion photoproduction data. The MAID energy-dependent solution has been used as input for an event generator producing realistic pseudo data. These were fitted using the SAID parametrization approach to determine single-energy and energy-dependent solutions over a range of lab photon energies from 200 to 1200 MeV. The resulting solutions were found to be consistent with the input amplitudes from MAID. Fits with a χ\chi-squared per datum of unity or less were generally achieved. We discuss energy regions where consistent results are expected, and explore the sensitivity of fits to the number of included single- and double-polarization observables.     Formation of Structure in Snowfields: Penitentes, Suncups, and Dirt Cones

    Penitentes and suncups are structures formed as snow melts, typically high in the mountains. When the snow is dirty, dirt cones and other structures can form instead. Building on previous field observations and experiments, this work presents a theory of ablation morphologies, and the role of surface dirt in determining the structures formed. The glaciological literature indicates that sunlight, heating from air, and dirt all play a role in the formation of structure on an ablating snow surface. The present work formulates a mathematical model for the formation of ablation morphologies as a function of measurable parameters. The dependence of ablation morphologies on weather conditions and initial dirt thickness are studied, focusing on the initial growth of perturbations away from a flat surface. We derive a single-parameter expression for the melting rate as a function of dirt thickness, which agrees well with a set of measurements by Driedger. An interesting result is the prediction of a dirt-induced travelling instability for a range of parameters.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure

    Precise Measurement of Sigma Beam Asymmetry for Positive Pion Photoproduction on the Proton from 800 to 1500 Mev

    The Sigma beam asymmetry for positive pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured over an angular range of 40-170 deg at photon energies from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV. The resulting data set includes 237 accurate points, 136 of these belonging to an almost unexplored domain above 1.05 GeV. Data of such high precision provide severe constraints for partial wave analyses. The influence of this experiment on the GW multipole analysis is demonstrated. Significant changes are found in multipoles connected to the S31(1620) and P13(1720) resonances.     Baryon Octet to Decuplet Electromagnetic Transitions

    The electromagnetic transition moments of the SU(3)SU(3)-flavor baryon octet to decuplet are examined within a lattice simulation of quenched QCD. The magnetic transition moment for the N  γΔN \; \gamma \to \Delta channel is found to be in agreement with recent experimental analyses. The lattice results indicate μpΔ/μp=0.88(15)\mu_{p \Delta} / \mu_p = 0.88(15). In terms of the Particle Data Group convention, fM1=0.231(41)f_{M1} = 0.231(41) GeV1/2{}^{-1/2} for p  γΔ+p \; \gamma \to \Delta^+ transitions. Lattice predictions for the hyperon M1M1 transition moments agree with those of a simple quark model. However the manner in which the quarks contribute to the transition moments in the lattice simulation is different from that anticipated by quark model calculations. The scalar quadrupole form factor exhibits a behavior consistent with previous multipole analyses. The E2/M1E2/M1 multipole transition moment ratios are also determined. The lattice results suggest REMGE2/GM1=+3±8R_{EM} \equiv -{\cal G}_{E2}/{\cal G}_{M1} = +3\pm 8 \% for p  γΔ+p \; \gamma \to \Delta^+ transitions. Of particular interest are significant nonvanishing signals for the E2/M1E2/M1 ratio in Ξ\Xi^- and Σ\Sigma^- electromagnetic transitions.Comment: PostScript file, 37 pages including figures. U.
