    Sensitivity to the pion-nucleon coupling constant in partial-wave analyses of elastic pi-N and NN scattering and pion photoproduction

    We summarize results obtained in our studies of the pion-nucleon coupling constant. Several different techniques have been applied to pi-N and NN elastic scattering data, and the existing database for single-pion photoproduction. The most reliable determination comes from pi-N elastic scattering. The sensitivity in this reaction was found to be greater, by at least a factor of 3, when compared with analyses of NN elastic scattering or single-pion photoproduction.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure.     A Rosetta Stone Relating Conventions In Photo-Meson Partial Wave Analyses

    A new generation of complete experiments in pseudoscalar meson photo-production is being pursued at several laboratories. While new data are emerging, there is some confusion regarding definitions of asymmetries and the conventions used in partial wave analyses (PWA). We present expressions for constructing asymmetries as coordinate-system independent ratios of cross sections, along with the names used for these ratios by different PWA groups.     Effect of thermodynamics on ion mixing

    Ion mixing of elemental 4d-5d metallic bilayers at 77 K by 600 keV Xe + + ions has been studied to test the validity of the phenomenological model of ion mixing that predicts a dependence on the chemical heats of mixing, DeltaHmix, and on the cohesive energies, DeltaHcoh, of the bilayer elements. A series of samples was chosen to minimize the variation in kinematical properties between samples while maximizing the variation in heats of mixing. The experimental results agree well with the model's predictions, and the experimentally determined constants K1=0.034 Ã… and K2=27 agree with those of previous work

    Toward a unified description of hadro- and photoproduction amplitudes

    The near-term objectives of the research program at the Data Analysis Center are established within the context of the existing partial wave analyses available through the online suite of analysis and database codes accessible through SAID, the Scattering Analysis Interactive Database. This presentation reviews the efforts to determine a model independent method to obtain sets of partial wave amplitudes for strong and electromagnetic reactions, the interpretation of the amplitudes in terms of the excited states of the nucleon, the role of new precision unpolarized and polarized data, and new developments aimed at determining the photoproduction mulitpoles in a unitary, coupled-channel approach. The Chew-Mandelstam technique is discussed and applied to the problem of the S-wave pion- and eta-photoproduction amplitudes. The resulting eta production amplitudes exhibit the expected resonant behavior near the eta production threshold.     Effect of urban vs. rural residence on the association between atopy and wheeze in Latin America: findings from a case-control analysis.

    BACKGROUND: The association between atopy and asthma is attenuated in non-affluent populations, an effect that may be explained by childhood infections such as geohelminths. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between atopy and wheeze in schoolchildren living in urban and rural areas of Ecuador and examine the effects of geohelminths on this association. METHODS: We performed nested case-control studies among comparable populations of schoolchildren living in rural communities and urban neighbourhoods in the Province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. We detected geohelminths in stool samples, measured recent wheeze and environmental exposures by parental questionnaire, and atopy by specific IgE (sIgE) and skin prick test (SPT) reactivity to aeroallergens. RESULTS: Atopy, particularly sIgE to house dust mite (HDM), was more strongly associated with recent wheeze in urban than rural schoolchildren: (urban, adj. OR 5.19, 95% CI 3.37-8.00, P < 0.0001; rural, adj. OR 1.81, 95%CI 1.09-2.99, P = 0.02; interaction, P < 0.001). The population fractions of wheeze attributable to atopy were approximately two-fold greater in urban schoolchildren: SPT to any allergen (urban 23.5% vs. rural 10.1%), SPT to HDM (urban 18.5% vs. rural 9.6%), and anti-HDM IgE (urban 26.5% vs. rural 10.5%), while anti-Ascaris IgE was related to wheeze in a high proportion of rural (49.7%) and urban (35.4%) children. The association between atopy and recent wheeze was attenuated by markers of geohelminth infections. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that urban residence modifies the association between HDM atopy and recent wheeze, and this effect is explained partly by geohelminth infections
