Practical Tips on Botulinum Toxin Injections

    Get PDF
Botulinum toxin injections are effective for hyperactivities of muscles and glands that are mediated by acetylcholine (Ach) release in neuronal terminal. The effects of botulinum toxin are reversible because the involved nerves build new sprouts and synapses with time. Thus, botulinum toxin is relatively safe and repeated applications are needed. To maximize effects of botulinum toxin without side effects, understanding the action mechanism of botulinum toxin and determining appropriate target sites are very important. Many guidelines have already been published and provided useful information for these. Therefore, in this chapter, we concentrate more on practical tips for botulinum toxin injections

Facial Image Reconstruction from a Corrupted Image by Support Vector Data Description

This paper proposes a method of automatic facial reconstruction from a facial image partially corrupted by noise or occlusion. There are two key features of this method; the one is the automatic extraction of the correspondences between the corrupted input face and reference face without additional manual tasks; the other is the reconstruction of the complete facial information from corrupted facial information based on these correspondences. In this paper, we propose a non-iterative approach that can match multiple feature points in order to obtain the correspondences between the input image and the reference face. Furthermore, shape and texture of the whole face are reconstructed by SVDD (Support Vector Data Description) from the partial correspondences obtained by matching. The experimental results of facial image reconstructions show that the proposed SVDD-based reconstruction method gives smaller reconstruction errors for a facial image corrupted by Gaussian noise and occlusion than the existing linear projection reconstruction method with a regulation factor. The proposed method also reduces the mean intensity error per pixel by an average of 35 %, especially in the reconstruction of a facial image corrupted by Gaussian noise

A Case Study on Safe Blast Design with Vibration Analysis

    Get PDF
Safe delicacy blasting is necessarily to decrease safe problems resulting from blasting but if designs to consider only safety, it is a problem not to ensure economical gains because the effect of blasting is decreased. Therefore, blasting vibration must be predicted to consider given circumstances and ground conditions before blasting work, and then a design based on predicted result must be done. In this study, the testing blasting was carried out in two fields within a country, and then measured data for testing blasting were collected. The effect for blasting vibration was analyzed as the property of distance, charging gunpowder capacity, surrounding conditions, and measured points. The test results were performed by back-analysis, and compared with previous research results. Therefore, it will be proposed an effective prediction and design

A Case of Acute Myocardial Infarction with the Anomalous Origin of the Right Coronary Artery from the Ascending Aorta above the Left Sinus of Valsalva and Left Coronary Artery from the Posterior Sinus of Valsalva

Coronary anomalies are rare angiographic findings. Moreover, there are few reports of cases of an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left sinus of Valsalva and of the left coronary artery from the posterior sinus of Valsalva. Here, we report a case with an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the ascending aorta above the left sinus of Valsalva and the left coronary artery from the posterior sinus of Valsalva. This was observed in a patient who was treated for a myocardial infarction of the inferior wall caused by a thrombus in the proximal right coronary artery. The patient was treated successfully with the implantation of a stent in the anomalous origin of the right coronary artery using a 6Fr Amplatz left 1 catheter

Whats Happening in the Jury Room? : Analyzing Shadow Jury Deliberations in Korea

This paper looked into the jury deliberation process by examining shadow jury deliberations in 18 actual cases between November 2010 and July 2011 in Korea. Based on the direct observation and the content analysis of the videotaped deliberation, we examined four key areas in jury deliberation in order to gain insights and implications for the institutional design of the jury system: (1) the binding effect of the jury verdict, (2) the number of jurors, (3) the jurors deliberations regarding both conviction and sentencing, and (4) the judges intervention in jury deliberation. The results demonstrate that the shadow jurors in general actively participated in the deliberation process by speaking in turn, and were respectful toward other jurors in debate. The jury forepersons positively played their role by giving jurors equal chance to talk and managed the discussion well. Misunderstanding of law and the intermingling of facts relevant to conviction or sentencing were not as frequent as many people expected: when such problems occurred, they were most often corrected through the intervention of other jurors or judges. Most judges were helpful in jurors reaching a verdict in the jury room. Also there was no definitive relationship between the size of the jury and the quality of deliberation. On the other hand, the shadow jurors tended to state their initial positions early in the deliberation process without fully discussing the issues first. They oftentimes made arguments not based on evidence. In addition, jurors emotions affected decision-making in some instances. Although encouraging aspects as well as areas for improvement coexist, the overall quality of jury deliberation in Korea, as evidenced by this study, is positive. Over time, the Korean jury system is expected to be firmly established as a robust institution to increase democratic participation of the lay people and to enhance the credibility of the judiciary. This article was supported by the 2011 Overseas Research Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences of Seoul National University granted to Professor Jisuk Wo

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in a patient with a single functioning kidney

AbstractRetroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of fibroinflammatory tissue around the abdominal aorta and ureteral entrapment in most cases. Idiopathic RPF is frequently reported in association with autoimmune diseases; however, there have been few reports of idiopathic RPF associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Here, we report a case of idiopathic RPF with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in a patient with a single functioning kidney, which was successfully treated by corticosteroid therapy and transient intraureteral stent insertion with a double-J catheter
