Epitaxial Thin Films of the Giant-Dielectric-Constant Material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} Grown by Pulsed-laser Deposition
Pulsed-laser deposition has been used to grow epitaxial thin films of the
giant-dielectric-constant material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} on LaAlO_3 and SrTiO_3
substrates with or without various conducting buffer layers. The latter include
YBa_2Cu_3O_7, La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4+\delta} and LaNiO_3. Above 100K - 150K
the thin films have a temperature independent dielectric constant as do single
crystals. The value of the dielectric constant is of the order of 1500 over a
wide temperature region, potentially making it a good candidate for many
applications. The frequency dependence of its dielectric properties below 100K
- 150K indicates an activated relaxation process.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Thrombotic variables and risk of idiopathic venous thromboembolism in women aged 45-64 years - Relationships to hormone replacement therapy
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been shown to increase the relative risk of idiopathic venous thromboembolism (VTE) about threefold in several observational studies and one randomised controlled trial. Whether or not this relative risk is higher in women with underlying thrombophilia phenotypes, such as activated protein C (APC) resistance, is unknown. We therefore restudied the participants in a case-control study of the relationship between the use of HRT and the occurrence of idiopathic VTE in women aged 45-64 years. After protocol exclusions, 66 of the cases in the original study and 163 of the controls were studied. Twenty haematological variables relevant to risk of VTE were analysed, including thrombotic states defined from the literature. The relative risk of VTE showed significant associations with APC resistance (OR 4.06; 95% CI 1.62, 10.21); low antithrombin (3.33; 1.15, 9.65) or protein C (2.93; 1.06, 8.14); and high coagulation factor IX (2.34: 1.26, 1.35), or fibrin D-dimer (3.84; 1.99, 7.32). HRT use increased the risk of VTE in women without any of these thrombotic static; (OR 4.09; 95% CI 1.26, 13.30). A similar effect of HRT use on the relative risk of VTE was also found in women with prothrombotic states. Thus for example, the combination of HRT use and APC resistance increased the risk of VTE about 13-fold compared with women of similar age without either APC resistance or HRT use (OR 13.27; 95%, CI 4.30, 40.97). We conclude that the combination of HRT use and thrombophilias (especially if multiple) increases the relative risk of VTE substantially; hence women known to have thrombophilias (especially if multiple) should be counselled about this increased risk prior to prescription of HRT. However. HRT increases the risk of VTE about fourfold even in women without any thrombotic abnormalities: possible causes are discussed
Effectiveness of an inlet flow turbulence control device to simulate flight noise fan in an anechoic chamber
A hemispherical inlet flow control device was tested on a 50.8 cm. (20-inch) diameter fan stage in the NASA-Lewis anechoic chamber. The control device used honeycomb and wire mesh to reduce turbulence intensities entering the fan. Far field acoustic power level results show about a 5 db reduction in blade passing tone and about 10 dB reduction in multiple pure tone sound power at 90% design fan speed with the inlet device in place. Hot film cross probes were inserted in the inlet to obtain data for two components of the turbulence at 65 and 90% design fan speed. Without the flow control device, the axial intensities were below 1.0%, while the circumferential intensities were almost twice this value. The inflow control device significantly reduced the circumferential turbulence intensities and also reduced the axial length scale
Far-field noise and internal modes from a ducted propeller at simulated aircraft takeoff conditions
The ducted propeller offers structural and acoustic benefits typical of conventional turbofan engines while retaining much of the aeroacoustic benefits of the unducted propeller. A model Advanced Ducted Propeller (ADP) was tested in the NASA Lewis Low-Speed Anechoic Wind Tunnel at a simulated takeoff velocity of Mach 0.2. The ADP model was designed and manufactured by the Pratt and Whitney Division of United Technologies. The 16-blade rotor ADP was tested with 22- and 40-vane stators to achieve cut-on and cut-off criterion with respect to propagation of the fundamental rotor-stator interaction tone. Additional test parameters included three inlet lengths, three nozzle sizes, two spinner configurations, and two rotor rub strip configurations. The model was tested over a range of rotor blade setting angles and propeller axis angles-of-attack. Acoustic data were taken with a sideline translating microphone probe and with a unique inlet microphone probe which identified inlet rotating acoustic modes. The beneficial acoustic effects of cut-off were clearly demonstrated. A 5 dB fundamental tone reduction was associated with the long inlet and 40-vane sector, which may relate to inlet duct geometry. The fundamental tone level was essentially unaffected by propeller axis angle-of-attack at rotor speeds of at least 96 percent design
Long-term storage and ageābiased export of fluvial organic carbon: field evidence from West Iceland
Terrestrial organic carbon (OC) plays an important role in the carbon cycle, but questions remain regarding the controls and timescale(s) over which atmospheric COā remains sequestered as particulate OC (POC). Motivated by observations that terrestrial POC is physically stored within soils and other shallow sedimentary deposits, we examined the role that sediment storage plays in the terrestrial OC cycle. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that sediment storage impacts the age of terrestrial POC. We focused on the Efri HaukadalsĆ” River catchment in Iceland as it lacks ancient sedimentary bedrock that would otherwise bias radiocarbonābased determinations of POC storage duration by supplying preāaged āpetrogenicā POC.
Our radiocarbon measurements of riverine suspended sediments and deposits implicated millennialāscale storage times. Comparison between the sample types (suspended and deposits) suggested an age offset between transported (suspended sediments) and stored (deposits) POC at the time of sampling, which is predicted by theory for the sediment age distribution in floodplains. We also observed that POC in suspended sediments is younger than the predicted mean storage duration generated from independent geomorphological data, which suggested an additional role for OC cycling. Consistent with this, we observed interparticle heterogeneity in the composition of POC by imaging our samples at the microscale using Xāray absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, we found that particles within individual samples differed in their sulfur oxidation state, which is indicative of multiple origins and/or diagenetic histories. Altogether, our results support recent coupled sediment storage and OC cycling models and indicate that the physical drivers of sediment storage are important factors controlling the cadence of carbon cycling
Octahedral Tilt Instability of ReO_3-type Crystals
The octahedron tilt transitions of ABX_3 perovskite-structure materials lead
to an anti-polar (or antiferroelectric) arrangement of dipoles, with the low
temperature structure having six sublattices polarized along various
crystallographic directions. It is shown that an important mechanism driving
the transition is long range dipole-dipole forces acting on both displacive and
induced parts of the anion dipole. This acts in concert with short range
repulsion, allowing a gain of electrostatic (Madelung) energy, both
dipole-dipole and charge-charge, because the unit cell shrinks when the hard
ionic spheres of the rigid octahedron tilt out of linear alignment.Comment: 4 page with 3 figures included; new version updates references and

Density functional approach for inhomogeneous star polymers
We propose microscopic density functional theory for inhomogeneous star
polymers. Our approach is based on fundamental measure theory for hard spheres,
and on Wertheim's first- and second-order perturbation theory for the
interparticle connectivity. For simplicity we consider a model in which all the
arms are of the same length, but our approach can be easily extended to the
case of stars with arms of arbitrary lengths.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitte
Study of the volume and spin collapse in orthoferrite LuFeO_3 using LDA+U
Rare earth (R) orthoferrites RFeO_3 exhibit large volume transitions
associated with a spin collapse. We present here ab initio calculations on
LuFeO_3. We show that taking into account the strong correlation among the
Fe-3d electrons is necessary. Indeed, with the LDA+U method in the Projector
Augmented Wave (PAW), we are able to describe the isostructural phase
transition at 50 GPa, as well as a volume discontinuity of 6.0% at the
transition and the considerable reduction of the magnetic moment on the Fe
ions. We further investigate the effect of the variation of U and J and find a
linear dependence of the transition pressure on these parameters. We give an
interpretation for the non-intuitive effect of J. This emphasizes the need for
a correct determination of these parameters especially when the LDA+U is
applied to systems (e.g in geophysical investigations) where the transition
pressure is a priori unknown
