Laser anemometer measurements in a transonic axial-flow fan rotor
Laser anemometer surveys were made of the 3-D flow field in NASA rotor 67, a low aspect ratio transonic axial-flow fan rotor. The test rotor has a tip relative Mach number of 1.38. The flowfield was surveyed at design speed at near peak efficiency and near stall operating conditions. Data is presented in the form of relative Mach number and relative flow angle distributions on surfaces of revolution at nine spanwise locations evenly spaced from hub to tip. At each spanwise location, data was acquired upstream, within, and downstream of the rotor. Aerodynamic performance measurements and detailed rotor blade and annulus geometry are also presented so that the experimental results can be used as a test case for 3-D turbomachinery flow analysis codes
Sketch-To-Solution: An Exploration of Viscous CFD with Automatic Grids
Numerical simulation of the Reynolds-averaged NavierStokes (RANS) equations has become a critical tool for the design of aerospace vehicles. However, the issues that affect the grid convergence of three dimensional RANS solutions are not completely understood, as documented in the AIAA Drag Prediction Workshop series. Grid adaption methods have the potential for increasing the automation and discretization error control of RANS solutions to impact the aerospace design and certification process. The realization of the CFD Vision 2030 Study includes automated management of errors and uncertainties of physics-based, predictive modeling that can set the stage for ensuring a vehicle is in compliance with a regulation or specification by using analysis without demonstration in flight test (i.e., certification or qualification by analysis). For example, the Cart3D inviscid analysis package has automated Cartesian cut-cell gridding with output-based error control. Fueled by recent advances in the fields of anisotropic grid adaptation, error estimation, and geometry modeling, a similar work flow is explored for viscous CFD simulations; where a CFD application engineer provides geometry, boundary conditions, and flow parameters, and the sketch-to-solution process yields a CFD simulation through automatic, error-based, grid adaptation
Draws and Drawbacks of an Oxford Study Abroad Experience
Using qualitative research methodology, we interviewed 23 American students participating in a study abroad program at Oxford University in the U.K. Results showed four primary draws to participating in the study abroad program and two perceived drawbacks. Positively, Oxford’s first appealing dynamic related to the tutorial system and students’ expanded range of options for specialized topics as well as in-depth study. Next, participants highly valued Oxford’s academic rigor, which accompanied the university’s unique approach to education. Third, Oxford’s location in England appealed to our participants. Finally, students reported hopes that future benefits would result from their decisions to attend Oxford and perceived associations with Oxford’s prestige. As participants weighed these benefits of studying at OU, they contrasted the positive dynamics with two major drawbacks: finances and missed U.S. experiences. Nevertheless, our participants unanimously affirmed their respective decisions to study at Oxford and highly recommended the experience to future potential applicants
Origami-Inspired Printed Robots
Robot manufacturing is currently highly specialized, time consuming, and expensive, limiting accessibility and customization. Existing rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., 3-D printing) can achieve complex geometries and are becoming increasingly accessible; however, they are limited to one or two materials and cannot seamlessly integrate active components. We propose an alternative approach called printable robots that takes advantage of available planar fabrication methods to create integrated electromechanical laminates that are subsequently folded into functional 3-D machines employing origami-inspired techniques. We designed, fabricated, and tested prototype origami robots to address the canonical robotics challenges of mobility and manipulation, and subsequently combined these designs to generate a new, multifunctional machine. The speed of the design and manufacturing process as well as the ease of composing designs create a new paradigm in robotic development, which has the promise to democratize access to customized robots for industrial, home, and educational use.National Science Foundation (U.S.). A Disk Shadow Around the Young Star ASR 41 in NGC 1333
We present images of the young stellar object ASR 41 in the NGC 1333 star
forming region at the wavelengths of H_alpha and [SII] and in the I, J, H, and
K-bands.
ASR 41 has the near-infrared morphology of an edge-on disk object, but
appears an order of magnitude larger than typical systems of this kind.
We also present detailed models of the scattering and radiative transfer in
systems consisting of a young star surrounded by a proto-planetary disk, and
the whole system being embedded in either an infalling envelope or a uniform
molecular cloud. The best fit to the observed morphology can be achieved with a
disk of approx. 200 AU diameter, immersed in a low density cloud. The low cloud
density is necessary to stay below the sub-mm flux upper limits and to preserve
the shadow cast by the disk via single scattering.
The results demonstrate that ASR 41 is probably not inherently different from
typical edge-on disk objects, and that its large apparent size is due to the
shadow of a much smaller disk being projected into the surrounding dusty
molecular material
Analysis of Care Coordination for Children with Special Health Care Needs: A Parent\u27s Perspective
Introduction. Care coordination involves organizing patient care activities and sharing information among all of the participants concerned with a patient\u27s care to achieve improved outcomes, a recent national focus. Compared to the national average, a higher percentage of Vermont children are cared for in an office that meets medical home criteria. However, there is limited research on medical home and care coordination for children with special health care needs (CSHCN) in the state of Vermont.
Objectives. The goal of this study was to assess family perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes about how well care coordination is working for Vermont families with CSHCN.
Methods. A paper and an electronic anonymous survey was developed for Vermont families with CSHCN. The surveys were then distributed by Vermont Family Network and the UVMMC Department of Pediatrics. Focus group interviews were also conducted at Vermont Family Network to provide family insight to explain the quantitative data.
Results. 30 participants responded to the survey; only 20 completed it. The overall composite satisfaction score is 54%. This score takes into account 4 questions regarding care coordination satisfaction. Each question was formatted into a numerical value ranging from zero to five, with an overall score of 20 equating to 100% satisfaction.
Discussion. Findings indicate that families with CSHCN are not satisfied with the level of care coordination currently provided. Respondents reported many barriers regarding care coordination, including lack of communication among health care providers, insurance coverage, and lack of support during transitional periods in care. Eclipse Timings of the Transient Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO0748-676. IV. The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer Eclipses
We report our complete database of X-ray eclipse timings of the low mass
X-ray binary EXO0748-676 observed by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)
satellite. As of this writing we have accumulated 443 full X-ray eclipses, 392
of which have been observed with the Proportional Counter Array on RXTE. These
include both observations where an eclipse was specifically targeted and those
eclipses found in the RXTE data archive. Eclipse cycle count has been
maintained since the discovery of the EXO0748-676 system in February 1985. We
describe our observing and analysis techniques for each eclipse and describe
improvements we have made since the last compilation by Wolff et al. (2002).
The principal result of this paper is the database containing the timing
results from a seven-parameter fit to the X-ray light curve for each observed
eclipse along with the associated errors in the fitted parameters. Based on the
standard O-C analysis, EXO0748-676 has undergone four distinct orbital period
epochs since its discovery. In addition, EXO0748-676 shows small-scale events
in the O-C curve that are likely due to short-lived changes in the secondary

Improving the LSST dithering pattern and cadence for dark energy studies
The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will explore the entire southern
sky over 10 years starting in 2022 with unprecedented depth and time sampling
in six filters, . Artificial power on the scale of the 3.5 deg LSST
field-of-view will contaminate measurements of baryonic acoustic oscillations
(BAO), which fall at the same angular scale at redshift . Using the
HEALPix framework, we demonstrate the impact of an "un-dithered" survey, in
which of each LSST field-of-view is overlapped by neighboring
observations, generating a honeycomb pattern of strongly varying survey depth
and significant artificial power on BAO angular scales. We find that adopting
large dithers (i.e., telescope pointing offsets) of amplitude close to the LSST
field-of-view radius reduces artificial structure in the galaxy distribution by
a factor of 10. We propose an observing strategy utilizing large dithers
within the main survey and minimal dithers for the LSST Deep Drilling Fields.
We show that applying various magnitude cutoffs can further increase survey
uniformity. We find that a magnitude cut of removes significant
spurious power from the angular power spectrum with a minimal reduction in the
total number of observed galaxies over the ten-year LSST run. We also determine
the effectiveness of the observing strategy for Type Ia SNe and predict that
the main survey will contribute 100,000 Type Ia SNe. We propose a
concentrated survey where LSST observes one-third of its main survey area each
year, increasing the number of main survey Type Ia SNe by a factor of
1.5, while still enabling the successful pursuit of other science
