    Cantonese Tone Identification in Three Temporal Cues in Quiet, Speech-Shaped Noise and Two-Talker Babble

    Purpose: Cochlear implant processors deliver mostly temporal envelope information and limited fundamental frequency (F0) information to the users, which make pitch and lexical tone perception challenging for cochlear implantees. Different factors have been found to affect Mandarin tone perception in temporal cues but the most effective temporal cues for lexical tone identification across different backgrounds remained unclear because no study has comprehensively examined the effects and interactions of these factors, particularly, in languages that use both pitch heights and pitch shapes to differentiate lexical meanings. The present study compared identification of Cantonese tones in naturally produced stimuli, and in three temporal cues, namely the amplitude contour cue (TE50), the periodicity cue (TE500), and the temporal fine structure cue (TFS), in three different numbers of frequency bands (B04, B08, B16) in quiet and two types of noise (two male talker-babble and speech-shaped noise).Method: Naturally produced Cantonese tones and synthetic tones that combined different acoustic cues and different number of frequency bands were presented to 18 young native Cantonese speakers for tone identification in quiet and noise.Results: Among the three temporal cues, TFS was the most effective for Cantonese tone identification in quiet and noise, except for T4 (LF) identification. Its effect was even stronger when the tones were presented in 4 or 8 bands rather than 16 bands. Neither TE500 nor TE50 was effective for Cantonese tone identification in quiet or noise. In noise, most tones in TE500 and TE50 were misheard as T4 (LF), demonstrating errors in both tone shapes and tone heights. Types of noise had limited effect on tone identification.Conclusions: Findings on Mandarin tone perception in temporal cues may not be applicable to other tone languages with more complex tonal systems. TFS presented in four bands was the most effective temporal cue for Cantonese tone identification in quiet and noise. Temporal envelope cues were not effective for tone, tone shape or tone height identification in Cantonese. These findings have implications for future design of cochlear implants for tone speakers who use pitch heights or a combination of pitch heights and pitch shapes to differentiate meanings

    Monophasic action potential recordings: which is the recording electrode?

It first appeared from De Gruyter via https://doi.org/10.1515/jbcpp-2016-0007The aim of this article is to provide an overview of current debate on the monophasic action potential (MAP) recording technique, specifically whether the depolarizing or the reference electrode is responsible for recording the MAP waveform. A literature search was made using key words including monophasic action potential, MAP, electrophysiological basis, recording electrode, depolarizing electrode, contact electrode, indifferent electrode, and reference electrode. References from articles were screened for additional relevant papers. Articles published by the different experimental groups claim that depolarizing electrode, but not reference electrode, records MAPs from the myocardium. This can be more accurately described when considering biophysical theory, which states that MAP is a bipolar signal with contributions from not only the depolarizing electrode but also remote activation at the reference electrode. It is not meaningful to claim that one is the recording electrode because potential differences must be measured between two points in space. Nevertheless, the MAP technique is useful for assessing the local electrical activity of the myocardium in contact with the depolarizing electrode.     Restitution analysis of alternans using dynamic pacing and its comparison with S1S2 restitution in heptanol-treated, hypokalaemic Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts.

It is considered to be an adaptive mechanism for preserving diastole at fast heart rates. Hypokalaemia is known to induce ventricular arrhythmias that could be prevented by heptanol, the gap junction uncoupler, mediated through increases in ventricular refractory period (VERP) without alterations in APDs. The present study investigated alternans and restitution properties during normokalaemia, hypokalaemia alone or hypokalaemia with heptanol (0.1 mM) in Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts using a dynamic pacing protocol. APD90 alternans were elicited in the epicardium and endocardium during normokalaemia. Hypokalaemia increased the amplitudes of epicardial APD90 alternans when basic cycle lengths (BCLs) were ≤65 msec, which was associated with increases in maximum APD90 restitution gradients, critical DIs and APD90 heterogeneity. Heptanol (0.1 mM) did not exacerbate or reduce the APD90 alternans or alter these restitution parameters further. By contrast, endocardial APD90 alternans did not show increases in amplitudes during hypokalaemia at short BCLs studied, and restitution parameters were also unchanged. This was true whether in the presence or absence of 0.1 mM heptanol. The study demonstrates that anti-arrhythmic effects of heptanol exerted during hypokalaemia occurred despite exacerbation of APD90 alternans. This would suggest that even in the presence of arrhythmogenic APD90 alternans, arrhythmias could still be prevented by influencing VERP alone.     Parenting approaches, family functionality, and internet addiction among Hong Kong adolescents

    © 2016 Wu et al. Background: Internet addiction (IA) among adolescents has become a global health problem, and public awareness of it is increasing. Many IA risk factors relate to parents and the family environment. This study examined the relationship between IA and parenting approaches and family functionality. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 2021 secondary students to identify the prevalence of IA and to explore the association between adolescent IA and familial variables, including parents' marital status, family income, family conflict, family functionality, and parenting approaches. Results: The results revealed that 25.3 % of the adolescent respondents exhibited IA, and logistic regression positively predicted the IA of adolescents from divorced families, low-income families, families in which family conflict existed, and severely dysfunctional families. Interestingly, adolescents with restricted Internet use were almost 1.9 times more likely to have IA than those whose use was not restricted. Conclusions: Internet addiction is common among Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong, and family-based prevention strategies should be aligned with the risk factors of IA.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Anti-arrhythmic effects of hypercalcemia in hyperkalemic, Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts.

It first appeared from Spandidos Publications via https://doi.org//10.3892/br.2016.735The present study examined the ventricular arrhythmic and electrophysiological properties during hyperkalemia (6.3 mM [K+] vs. 4 mM in normokalemia) and anti-arrhythmic effects of hypercalcemia (2.2 mM [Ca2+]) in Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts. Monophasic action potential recordings were obtained from the left ventricle during right ventricular pacing. Hyperkalemia increased the proportion of hearts showing provoked ventricular tachycardia (VT) from 0 to 6 of 7 hearts during programmed electrical stimulation (Fisher's exact test, P<0.05). It shortened the epicardial action potential durations (APDx) at 90, 70, 50 and 30% repolarization and ventricular effective refractory periods (VERPs) (analysis of variance, P<0.05) without altering activation latencies. Endocardial APDx and VERPs were unaltered. Consequently, ∆APDx (endocardial APDx-epicardial APDx) was increased, VERP/latency ratio was decreased and critical intervals for reexcitation (APD90-VERP) were unchanged. Hypercalcemia treatment exerted anti-arrhythmic effects during hyperkalemia, reducing the proportion of hearts showing VT to 1 of 7 hearts. It increased epicardial VERPs without further altering the remaining parameters, returning VERP/latency ratio to normokalemic values and also decreased the critical intervals. In conclusion, hyperkalemia exerted pro-arrhythmic effects by shortening APDs and VERPs.     Graft Injury in Relation to Graft Size in Right Lobe Live Donor Liver Transplantation: A Study of Hepatic Sinusoidal Injury in Correlation With Portal Hemodynamics and Intragraft Gene Expression

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the degree and mechanism of hepatic sinusoidal injury in different graft sizes in right lobe live donor liver transplantation (LDLT). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Liver grafts from living donors are likely to be small-for-size for adult recipients. Graft injury after reperfusion is common, but the mechanism and degree of injury remain unclear. The hepatic sinusoidal injury in different graft sizes and its relationship with portal hemodynamics and intragraft gene response at the early phase after reperfusion have not been studied in right lobe LDLT. METHODS: From May 2000 to November 2001, 40 adults receiving right lobe LDLT had portal pressure measured continuously before and after reperfusion. Liver biopsies were taken before and after reperfusion for detection of vasoregulatory genes (endothelin-1 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase) and heat shock genes (heat shock protein 70 and heme oxygenase-1), and electron microscope examination. Blood samples from the portal vein and suprahepatic inferior vena cava were taken for the measurement of plasma nitric oxide level. RESULTS: The recipients were grouped according to the ratio of graft weight to estimated standard liver weight: group 1 (n = 10), less than 40%; group 2 (n = 21), 40% to 60%; and group 3 (n = 9), more than 60%. The portal pressures recorded after reperfusion in group 1 were significantly higher within 30 minutes of reperfusion than those in groups 2 and 3. After reperfusion, the intragraft endothelin-1 mRNA level in group 1 increased by 161% of the basal level but decreased by 31.5% and 62% of the basal level in groups 2 and 3, respectively. The intragraft mRNA level of heme oxygenase-1 in groups 1 and 2 decreased by 75.5% and 25.3% of the basal level respectively but increased by 41% of basal level in group 3. The intragraft protein level of heat shock protein 70 decreased by 50 ng/mL after reperfusion in group 1 but increased by 12.4 ng/mL and 0.6 ng/mL in groups 2 and 3, respectively. The portal vein plasma nitric oxide level decreased more significantly after reperfusion in group 1 than in group 2. Electron microscope examination of liver biopsies in group 1 showed tremendous mitochondrial swelling as well as irregular large gaps between the sinusoidal lining cells. There were two hospital deaths in group 1 and none in the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Patients implanted with grafts less than 40% of standard liver weight suffered from transient portal hypertension early after reperfusion. The phenomenon was accompanied by intragraft upregulation of endothelin-1 and ultrastructural evidence of sinusoidal damage. The transient portal hypertension after reperfusion, subsequent endothelin-1 overexpression, and plasma nitric oxide level reduction, together with downregulation of heme oxygenase-1 and heat shock protein 70, may account for the small-for-size graft injury

    Revealing the millipede and other soil-macrofaunal biodiversity in Hong Kong using a citizen science approach

    Soil biodiversity plays important roles in nutrient recycling in both the environment and agriculture. However, they are generally understudied worldwide. To reveal the diversity of soil macrofauna in Hong Kong, here we initiated a citizen science project involving university, non-governmental organisations and secondary school students and teachers. It is envisioned that the citizen science approach used in this study could be used as a demonstration to future biodiversity sampling and monitoring studies.Throughout a year of monitoring and species sampling across different localities in Hong Kong, 150 soil macrofaunal morphospecies were collected. Eighty five of them were further identified by morphology and DNA barcoding was assigned to each identified morphospecies, yielding a total of 646 DNA barcodes, with new millipede sequences deposited to the GenBank. The soil macrofauna morphospecies in Hong Kong found in this study are mainly dominated by millipedes (23 out of 150) and oligochaetes (15 out of 150). Amongst the twenty three identified millipedes, two polyxenid millipedes, Monographis queenslandica Huynh & Veenstra, 2013 and Alloproctoides remyi Marquet and Condé, 1950 are first recorded in Hong Kong. Information has been curated on an online platform and database (http://biodiversity.sls.cuhk.edu.hk/millipedes). A postcard summarising the findings of millipedes in Hong Kong has also been made as a souvenir and distributed to citizen participants. The identified macrofauna morphospecies and their 646 DNA barcodes in this study established a solid foundation for further research in soil biodiversity
