    Rayleigh Scattering Cross Section Redward of Lyα\alpha by Atomic Hydrogen

    We present a low energy expansion of the Kramers-Heisenberg formula for atomic hydrogen in terms of (ω/ωl)(\omega/\omega_l), where ωl\omega_l and ω\omega are the angular frequencies corresponding to the Lyman limit and the incident radiation, respectively. The leading term is proportional to (ω/ωl)4(\omega/\omega_l)^4, which admits a well-known classical interpretation. With higher order terms we achieve accuracy with errors less than 4 % of the scattering cross sections in the region ω/ωl≤0.6\omega/\omega_l\le 0.6. In the neighboring region around Lyα\alpha (ω/ωl>0.6\omega/\omega_l >0.6), we also present an explicit expansion of the Kramers-Heisenberg formula in terms of Δω≡(ω−ωLyα)/ωLyα\Delta\omega\equiv (\omega-\omega_{Ly\alpha})/\omega_{Ly\alpha}. The accuracy with errors less than 4 % can be attained for ω/ωl≥0.6\omega/\omega_l \ge 0.6 with the expansion up to the fifth order of Δω\Delta\omega. We expect that these formulae will be usefully applied to the radiative transfer in high neutral column density regions, including the Gunn-Peterson absorption troughs and Rayleigh scattering in the atmospheres of giants.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Comparative analysis of the JAK/STAT signaling through erythropoietin receptor and thrombopoietin receptor using a systems approach

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway is one of the most important targets for myeloproliferative disorder (MPD). Although several efforts toward modeling the pathway using systems biology have been successful, the pathway was not fully investigated in regard to understanding pathological context and to model receptor kinetics and mutation effects.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We have performed modeling and simulation studies of the JAK/STAT pathway, including the kinetics of two associated receptors (the erythropoietin receptor and thrombopoietin receptor) with the wild type and a recently reported mutation (JAK2V617F) of the JAK2 protein.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We found that the different kinetics of those two receptors might be important factors that affect the sensitivity of JAK/STAT signaling to the mutation effect. In addition, our simulation results support clinically observed pathological differences between the two subtypes of MPD with respect to the JAK2V617F mutation.</p

    Multi-marker approach using procalcitonin, presepsin, galectin-3, and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 for the prediction of mortality in sepsis

    Background: Biomarker could be objective and reliable tools to predict mortality in sepsis. We explored the prognostic utilities of emerging biomarkers in septic patients and questioned whether adding biomarkers to the clinical variables would improve the prediction of mortality in sepsis. Methods: This retrospective study included 157 septic patients (112 patients with sepsis; 45 patients with septic shock). Procalcitonin (PCT), presepsin, galectin-3, and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) concentrations were analyzed in relation to the 30-day all-cause mortality. Their value added on top of Sequential (Sepsis-related) Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and white blood cells was also analyzed. Results: PCT could not predict 30-day mortality. Univariate hazard ratio [HR with 95% confidence interval (CI)] of the other dichotomized variables was: 1.33 (0.55–3.194) for presepsin; 7.87 (2.29–26.96) for galectin-3; 1.55 (0.71–3.38) for sST2; and 2.18 (1.01–4.75) for SOFA score. The risk of 30-day mortality increased stepwise as the number of biomarkers above optimal cutoff values increased, and the highest risk was observed when all four biomarkers and SOFA score increased (HR = 14.5). Multi-marker approach predicted 30-day mortality better than SOFA score [area under the curves (95% CI), 0.769 (0.695–0.833) vs. 0.615 (0.535–0.692)]. In reclassification analyses, adding biomarkers to clinical variables improved the prediction of mortality. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a possible prognostic utility of PCT, presepsin, galectin-3, and sST2 in sepsis.     A TEXT MINING APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION SECURITY AWARENESS: KOREA, UNITED STATES, AND CHINA

    Recently in Korea, the importance of information security awareness has been receiving a growing attention. Attacks such as social engineering and ransomware are hard to prevent because it cannot be solved by information security technology. Also, the profitability of information security industry has been decreasing for years. Because of this, many companies try to find a new growth-engine and an entry to the foreign market. The main purpose of this paper is to draw out some information security issues that people of each country think and to analyze it. Finally, this study identifies issues and suggests how to improve the situation in Korea. For this, Topic Modeling analysis has been used to find information security issues of each country. Moreover, the score of sentiment analysis has been used to compare each country. The study contributes to the literature by exploring and explaining what critical issues are and how to improve the situation based on the identified issues of the Korean information security industry. Also, this study adds to the literature by demonstrating how text mining can be applied to the context of information security awareness. From a pragmatic perspective, the study has the implications for information security enterprises. This study is expected to provide a new and realistic method of analyzing domestic and foreign issues using the analyzing real data of the Twitter API
