    Ultrastructure of intermediate stages in polarity reversal of thyroid epithelium in follicles in suspension culture.

    Separated thyroid follicles can be maintained in suspension culture in Coon's modified F-12 medium in 0.5\% calf serum. If the serum concentration is raised to 5\%, the follicles undergo inversion in 3-5 d. During the process of inversion, epithelial cells can be observed in intermediate stages of polarity reversal. The earliest ultrastructural changes recognized are surface changes in which tight junctions and microvilli appear at the lateral margins of the cell near the medium. Later, changes in the distribution of intracellular organelles occur. The Golgi apparatus shifts towards the end of the cell facing the medium, and lysosomes shift toward the luminal end of the cell. The right junctions and microvilli at the luminal end of the cell disappear sometime after the cytoplasmic organelles rearrange. The luminal colloid disappears only after the surface changes (loss of tight junctions and microvilli) occur at the luminal end of the cell. There appears to be some regulation of the order in which changes occur during polarity reversal of the thyroid epithelial cell

    We discuss polarization selection rules for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in Bi2212. Using these we show that the ``hump'' in the superconducting gap observed in the XX quadrant in our earlier work is not on the main CuO2CuO_2 band, but rather on an umklapp band arising from the structural superlattice. The intrinsic gap is most likely quite small over a range of ±10∘\pm 10^\circ about the diagonal directions.Comment: 3 pages, revtex, 3 uuencoded postscript figure

    Induction of non-d-wave order-parameter components by currents in d-wave superconductors

    It is shown, within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory for a superconductor with d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry, that the passing of a supercurrent through the sample results, in general, in the induction of order-parameter components of distinct symmetry. The induction of s-wave and d_{xy(x^2-y^2)-wave components are considered in detail. It is shown that in both cases the order parameter remains gapless; however, the structure of the lines of nodes and the lobes of the order parameter are modified in distinct ways, and the magnitudes of these modifications differ in their dependence on the (a-b plane) current direction. The magnitude of the induced s-wave component is estimated using the results of the calculations of Ren et al. [Phys. Rev.     Local density of states for the corner geometry interface of d-wave superconductors, within the extended Hubbard model

    The spatial variations of the order parameter, and the local density of states (LDOS) on the corner of s-wave or dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors, as well as in superconductor-insulator-normal metal interfaces, are calculated self consistently using the Bogoliubov-deGennes formalism within the two dimensional extended Hubbard model. The exact diagonalization method is used. Due to the suppression of the dominant d-wave order parameter, the extended s-wave order parameter is induced near the surface, that alternates its sign for the topmost sites at adjacent edges of the lattice and decays to zero in the bulk. The presence of surface roughness results into the appearance of the zero band conduction peak (ZBCP) near the corner surface which lacks from the predictions of the quasiclassical theory.Comment: 13 pages with 17 figure

    Infrared Conductivity in Layered dd-wave Superconductors

    We calculate the infrared conductivity of a stack of coupled, two-dimensional superconducting planes within the Fermi liquid theory of superconductivity. We include the effects of random scattering processes and show that the presence of even a small concentration of resonant impurities, in a dd-wave superconductor, has an important effect on both the in-plane and cc-axis transport properties, which could serve as signatures for dd-wave pairing.Comment: 18 pages in a RevTex (3.0) file plus 5 postscript figures (uuencoded).
