Orbital trauma with a large wooden foreign body: a case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Injuries caused by a foreign bodies in the craniofacial region constitute a significant percentage of accidents during the work. The most serious problem is to determine the exact location and extent of damage caused by a foreign body. The aim of work is to present a scheme of conduct in case of a foreign body inside the eye socket. Matherials and methods: Describes a case of a patient with an injury caused by a wooden foreign body. The circumstances of occurrence, ophthalmic and surgical actions taken in order to remove it were included. A lot of attention has been paid to prevention of intraocular infections. Results: Patient did not find both post-traumatic and postoperative ophthalmic nerve injuries. Summary: The most important for healing process is exact removal of the foreign body and prophylaxis of infections. In addition to treatment, it is important to educate the patient in the prevention of this type of injury

An odontoma causing a delay in teeth eruption in an 11-year old boy. Case report

    Get PDF
Odontomas are the benign tumors, which are usually discovered by chance in radiographic images taken because of anomalies such as delayed eruption of teeth or malocclusion. Case study shows the course of diagnosis of an asymptomatic odontoma  in youth, followed by a failure in teeth development

Dislocation of the mandible in a 47 year old patient

    Get PDF
Dislocation of mandible is relatively uncommon disorder of temporomandibular joints. Disorder can occur during extreme dilation of mouth such as yawing, during dental treatments or endoscopic examination. 47- year old patient was admitted to the Department of Maxillo-facial Surgery in case of bilateral mandible dislocation. In this case the reposition in general anaesthesia was performed but ended up with failure

Osteomyelitis of the mandible in the patient with plasmocytoma – case report

    Get PDF
Osteomyelitis is an infection of bone which may be caused by infection carried to the bone via the bloodstream or from surrounding tissue. Treatment of osteomyelitis of the mandible is extremely difficult because of oral environment and teeth presence. Management often involves both debridement and antibiotic selection. Despite this, aggressive surgical interventions and conservative therapy are most important aspects of treatment.Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is an avascular necrosis related to osteomyelitis and characterized by necrotic bone in the maxillofacial region. The prevalence of this is associated with treatment with high-potency bisphosphonates or denosumab and it seems to be getting increasingly frequent. Due to lack of prospective studies with long-term follow-up there are no recommendation for treatment of MRNOJ. The main aim of treatment of patients with MRNOJ is to continue and to support oncological treatment as well as to provide patient education, comfort to life, control of pain and to prevent from secondary infection and development of new areas of necrosis

Dislocation of mandible in 48 year old patient - the continuation of a therapy

    Get PDF
Dislocation of a temporomandible joint (TMJ) is a rare disfunction, which has multiform background divided into imbalance in the function of neuromascular component or structural deficit. A 48-year-old woman was admitted to the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of the Medical University of Lublin due to continuation of a treatment of TMJ dislocation. Previous hospitalization was performed a few months earlier. Reposition in general anaesthesia was used as a treatment, however it ended up with defeat. Current hospitalization with open surgery reposition was scheduled. Bilateral condylectomy was prosecuted. After surgery correct movability and proper anterior-posterior placement of mandible were achieved

When words hurt … literally. A case report of temporomandibular joint dislocation in a patient with Tourette’s syndrome

    Get PDF
Tourette's syndrome is a disease from the borderlands of psychiatry and neurology. Its course consists of chronic motor tics, vocal tics or vocalizations. The first symptoms appear in childhood or adolescence. Tics may cause body injuries. In this case, tics probably have contributed dislocation of the temporomandibular joints

Oral mucositis in patients with leukaemia following high-dose chemotherapy and autologous haematopoietic stem cells transplantation

    Get PDF
Historically, oral mucositis (OM) has been identified as a symptom developing in patients undergoing irradiation due to head and neck cancers, those undergoing therapy in preparation for a stem cell transplant, or receiving special therapeutic protocols due to acute myeloid leukaemia. It results from direct toxic injury to the mucosal epithelial cells by the immunosuppressive regimen. In this article we want to describe pathogenesis, diagnostic and actual possibility of treatment of OM. The literature reports several rating scale for OM that have been used for patients undergoing cancer therapy. The most useful of them are Oral Toxicity Scale and Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale. In the prevention and treatment of OM associated with standard chemotherapy various drugs and agents acting locally and systemically are used. Many of them are still remaining in the course of research

Cervicofacial actinomycosis following jaw pathology - case reports

    No full text
Cervicofacial actinomycosis is a specific, primarily chronic inflammatory process caused by Gram-positive anaerobic, microaerophilic Actinomyces bacteria. The infection usually results from the skin or mucosal lesions. The following paper reports two cases of Cervicofacial actinomycosis in patients admitted in 2014 to Maxillofacial Surgery Department in Lublin, Poland. Diagnosis of culture-positive actinomycosis was based on histopathology findings and the presence of actinomyces colonies. Cervicofacial actinomycosis requires surgical treatment, oral cavity sanation, and in the case of presenting actinomycosis abscesses formation, combined surgical incision and drainage. Long-term penicillin antibiotic therapy is necessary

Severe herpes simplex oral mucositis in a patient with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after autologous stem cells transplantation - case report

    No full text
The study presents the case of a 25-year-old patient with the diagnosis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma treated autologously with haematopoietic stem cells transplantation. During the period of aplasia after chemotherapy severe sore lips, mouth and esophagus herpes simplex mucositis developed and is successfully treated with foscarnet. The clinical course, localized causal and symptomatic treatment, along with the therapy imaging, are presented

The Acoustic Analysis of Sounds [s], [z], [š] and [ž] by Patients of Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of the Medical University in Lublin, Operated on for Angle’s Class III Defect

    No full text
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań obrazujących, w jaki sposób zabieg operacyjny przeprowadzony w obrębie aparatu artykulacyjnego, wykonany u osób z wadą szkieletową klasy III wg Angle’a celem przywrócenia prawidłowych warunków anatomicznych, wpływa na wymowę głosek sybilantnych [s], [z], [š] i [ž]. Wykorzystując program PRAAT, wykonano analizę akustyczną głosek wyizolowanych z nagrania tekstu przeczytanego przez każdego pacjenta przed operacją i 3 miesiące po operacji. Zmierzone parametry to: 1) środek ciężkości widma (ang. center of gravity), 2) częstotliwość odcięcia szumu oraz 3) czas trwania poszczególnych głosek. The article presents the results of studies showing how the surgical procedure carried out within the articulatory apparatus, performed in people with Angle’s class III defect to restore normal anatomic conditions, influences the pronunciation of sibilant sounds [s], [z], [š] and [ž]. Using the PRAAT program, an acoustic analysis of the sounds isolated from the recording of the text, read by each patient before surgery and 3 months after surgery, was performed. The measured parameters are: (1) the center of gravity, (2) the frequency of the noise cut-off, and (3) the duration of individual sounds. Preliminary reports indicate that the change in the anatomical conditions of the stomatognathic system also causes a change in the articulation of the sibilants, but without the use of speech therapy, not everyone’s pronunciation improves
