An experimental method for the in-situ observation of eutectic growth patterns in bulk samples of transparent alloys

We present an experimental method for the in-situ observation of directional-solidification fronts in bulk samples of transparent eutectic alloys. The growth front is observed obliquely in dark field through the liquid and a glass wall of the container with a long-distance microscope. We show that a focused image of the whole growth front can be obtained at a certain tilt angle of the microscope. At this tilt angle, eutectic fibers of about 3.5\mic in diameter can be clearly seen over the whole growth front in 400-\mic thick samples

Stacking-Fault Energy and Anti-Invar Effect in FeMn Alloys

Based on state-of-the-art density-functional-theory methods we calculate the stacking-fault energy of the paramagnetic random Fe-22.5at.%Mn alloy between 300-800 K. We estimate magnetic thermal excitations by considering longitudinal spin-fluctuations. Our results demonstrate that the interplay between the magnetic excitations and the thermal lattice expansion is the main factor determining the anti-Invar effect, the hcp-fcc transformation temperature, and the stacking-fault energy, which is in excellent agreement with measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

In situ experiments in microgravity and phase-field simulations of the lamellar-to-rod transition during eutectic growth

International audienceIn recent experiments on the solidification of the binary eutectic alloy succinonitrile-(D)camphor carried out on board of the International Space Station (ISS), a transition from rod to lamellar patterns was observed for low growth velocities. The transition was interpreted in terms of a competition between a propagative instability of lamellae and a drift induced by a transverse temperature gradient. Phase-field simulations of a symmetric model alloy support this scenario: for a fixed transverse temperature gradient, the transition from rods to lamellae occurs for a critical composition at fixed velocity, and for a critical velocity at fixed composition. Since the alloy and control parameters used in experiments and simulations are different, our results strongly suggest that this morphological transition is generic for eutectic alloys

The Influence of the effect of solute on the thermodynamic driving force on grain refinement of Al alloys

    Get PDF
Grain refinement is known to be strongly affected by the solute in cast alloys. Addition of some solute can reduce grain size considerably while others have a limited effect. This is usually attributed to the constitutional supercooling which is quantified by the growth restriction factor, Q. However, one factor that has not been considered is whether different solutes have differing effects on the thermodynamic driving force for solidification. This paper reveals that addition of solute reduces the driving force for solidification for a given undercooling, and that for a particular Q value, it is reduced more substantially when adding eutectic-forming solutes than peritectic-forming elements. Therefore, compared with the eutectic-forming solutes, addition of peritectic-forming solutes into Al alloys not only possesses a higher initial nucleation rate resulted from the larger thermodynamic driving force for solidification, but also promotes nucleation within the constitutionally supercooled zone during growth. As subsequent nucleation can occur at smaller constitutional supercoolings for peritectic-forming elements, a smaller grain size is thus produced. The very small constitutional supercooling required to trigger subsequent nucleation in alloys containing Ti is considered as a major contributor to its extraordinary grain refining efficiency in cast Al alloys even without the deliberate addition of inoculants. The Australian Research Council (ARC DP10955737)
