Describes the background to the problem of trypanosomiasis in Africa, identifying Bos taurus & Bos indicus types of trypanotolerant breeds & discussing the importance of their use in the exploitation of tsetse-infested areas of Africa. Examines the establishment of a network of trypanotolerant livestock situations throughout West and Central Africa, & summarizes the current network situation, particularly w. respect to the productivity of trypanotolerant & trypano-susceptible breeds under dif. levels of risk & under dif. management regimes

Examines the productivities of N'Dama cattle, introduced Sahiwal cattle, and Sahiwal X N'Dama crossbred at the Teko Livestock Station, Sierra Leone. Evaluates environmental and genetic effects relating to breed group, month and year of parturition or birth, age, sex, individual cow etc. as appropriate for each performance trait

Reports on the productivity of trypanotolerant breeds in 18 West and Central African countries. Traits examined included reproductive performance, cow and calf viability, milk production, growth and body weight of cattle within a village or ranch management system and under four degrees of trypanosomiasis risk levels. The results were used to build productivity indices, and compared productivity of these breeds with crosses of zebu and humpless cattle. A coordinated research and project network is recommended
