Diffractive paths for weak localization in quantum billiards
We study the weak localization effect in quantum transport through a clean
ballistic cavity with regular classical dynamics. We address the question which
paths account for the suppression of conductance through a system where
disorder and chaos are absent. By exploiting both quantum and semiclassical
methods, we unambiguously identify paths that are diffractively backscattered
into the cavity (when approaching the lead mouths from the cavity interior) to
play a key role. Diffractive scattering couples transmitted and reflected paths
and is thus essential to reproduce the weak-localization peak in reflection and
the corresponding anti-peak in transmission. A comparison of semiclassical
calculations featuring these diffractive paths yields good agreement with full
quantum calculations and experimental data. Our theory provides system-specific
predictions for the quantum regime of few open lead modes and can be expected
to be relevant also for mixed as well as chaotic systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, final version with extended discussion and added

Inhaled iloprost for the control of pulmonary hypertension
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a life-threatening disease characterized by an elevated pulmonary arterial pressure and vascular resistance with a poor prognosis. Various pulmonary and extrapulmonary causes are now recognized to exist separately from the idiopathic form of pulmonary hypertension. An imbalance in the presence of vasoconstrictors and vasodilators plays an important role in the pathophysiology of the disease, one example being the lack of prostacyclin. Prostacyclin and its analogues are potent vasodilators with antithrombotic, antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory qualities, all of which are important factors in the pathogenesis of precapillary pulmonary hypertension. Iloprost is a stable prostacyclin analogue available for intravenous and aerosolized application. Due to the severe side effects of intravenous administration, the use of inhaled iloprost has become a mainstay in PAH therapy. However, owing to the necessity for 6 to 9 inhalations a day, oral treatment is often preferred as a first-line therapy. Numerous studies proving the efficacy and safety of inhaled iloprost have been performed. It is therefore available for a first-line therapy for PAH. The combination with endothelin-receptor antagonists or sildenafil has shown encouraging effects. Further studies with larger patient populations will have to demonstrate the use of combination therapy for long-term treatment of pulmonary hypertension
Application Migration Effort in the Cloud
Over the last years, the utilization of cloud resources has been steadily rising and an increasing number of enterprises are moving applications to the cloud. A leading trend is the adoption of Platform as a Service to support rapid application deployment. By providing a managed environment, cloud platforms take away a lot of complex configuration effort required to build scalable applications. However, application migrations to and between clouds cost development effort and open up new risks of vendor lock-in. This is problematic because frequent migrations may be necessary in the dynamic and fast changing cloud market. So far, the effort of application migration in PaaS environments and typical issues experienced in this task are hardly understood. To improve this situation, we present a cloud-to-cloud migration of a real-world application to seven representative cloud platforms. In this case study, we analyze the feasibility of the migrations in terms of portability and the effort of the migrations. We present a Docker-based deployment system that provides the ability of isolated and reproducible measurements of deployments to platform vendors, thus enabling the comparison of platforms for a particular application. Using this system, the study identifies key problems during migrations and quantifies these differences by distinctive metrics
