    A recurring theme in naval debate since the mid-19th century has been the vulnerability of warships in the face of the threats posed by new weapons. In their day Sinope, Hampton Roads, Lissa, Tsushima, and Jutland focused the attention of the public, as well as professional opinion, on the subject. World War II and the development of nuclear weapons rekindled this interest. From a historical perspective this interest appears to have been most keen during a conflict following an extended period of peace during which there was rapid development in naval weapons technology
