Resistance is the secret of joy! --Alice Walker Possessing the Secret of Joy What does it mean to love a daughter in a culture that is hostile to her integrity? In a culture where power equals dominance and superiority, men\u27s control of public life--the world of political and economic power that shapes the desires of private life--places mothers in a double bind as their daughters approach womanhood. The common ways that mothers have of guiding daughters--what we call the paths of least resistance in chapter two 1 --ask girls to make deep psychological sacrifices to straddle the cultural division of work, in the male public world of politics and business, and love, in the female private world of home and family. As girls find that they cannot enter patriarchy fully and powerfully as themselves, they feel betrayed by their mothers. But mothers did not create the separate spheres of public and private life. It is this cultural betrayal of human integrity, which divides our wholeness into these separate spheres, that makes loving and raising a daughter political work. The romance-into-mothering myth created in the mid-1800s told women that their true nature is best expressed in the home, in private life. 2 When market-driven factory life in the Industrial Revolution consumed women\u27s traditional work of producing food, clothing, medicine, and crafts, women were suddenly stripped of their expertise and authority. Analysis of ISER 2008-2009 Survey Data

In September 2008, the superintendent of the Anchorage School District and the mayor of Anchorage sent a letter to the governor of Alaska, reporting what they thought might be an influx of students into Anchorage from rural communities. Enrollment in the school district was higher than expected, and it coincided with the largest-ever Alaska Permanent Fund dividend and with a one-time payment of $1,200 the state made per person, to help offset high energy costs. Researchers at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at UAA have a longstanding interest in migration patterns in Alaska and the Arctic, and they saw the increased enrollment in Anchorage schools as a potential opportunity to better understand: • If rural Alaskans are moving to Anchorage • Where they are coming from • Why they are moving So with the cooperation of the Anchorage School District, ISER conducted a survey of the parents or guardians of students who had enrolled in Anchorage in the 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 school years and who had transferred in from other Alaska school districts. Besides finding out where students were coming from—and why—another purpose of the study was to provide the Anchorage School District and the Municipality of Anchorage with information about what they could do to help students and families who are new to the city. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada

This contribution to the very important topic of Indigenous access to justice, and truth and reconciliation processes is informed by my role as one of three Commissioners of the first national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) ever to take place in Canada. We are in the midst of implementing a five-year TRC mandate which began in 2009. It is a complex, multi-faceted mandate, historical both in its nature, and in its content and purpose. We are reviewing the history of the injurious relations between the Canadian state and the Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the legacy of that history in today’s lives, with our lens specifically centered on the 130-year long practice of forced residential schooling for Indigenous children. We are also re-writing that history, by documenting, sharing, and safeguarding a perspective of it that has never been told or taught, the perspective of the Indigenous Peoples

Classification and use of landform information to increase the accuracy of land condition monitoring in Western Australian pastoral rangelands

The aim of this research was to develop land unit scale data to assist land condition monitoring projects in pastoral rangelands in Western Australia. Landforms are a major components of land units and methods were explored to include landforms as a variable in land unit predictive modelling. Three land unit prediction models were tested, a Binary Weighted Overlay (BWO), a Fuzzy Weighted Overlay (FWO) and a Positive Weights of Evidence (PWofE) model

The Effects of Kepone on the Estuarine Copepod \u3ci\u3eAcartia tonsa\u3c/i\u3e

Due to the contamination of a 113 km reach of the James River, Kepone poses a serious environmental threat to the Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of the study is to determine the acutely toxic and sublethal levels of kepone for the copepod Acartia tonsa, and to investigate what effects those levels may have on filtration rates. Kepone was determined to be acutely toxic to A. tonsa, with a 96 hour LC50 of 4.96 ug/1. Dunaliella tertiolecta was selected as the food source for the grazing experiments. Kepone concentrations of 0.046 ug/1 significantly (0.05 level) reduced the flltering rate under conditions of chronic exposure. The lesser concentrations of 0.025 and 0.0046 ug/1 of kepone were not significantly different from the controls. It is hoped that research into the chronic stress of this pesticide may potentially provide information which would be useful in the overall understanding of the sublethal impact of chlorinated pesticides on a global scale
