Sir John Adams: his legacy to the world of particle accelerators
John Adams acquired an unrivalled reputation for his leading part in
designing and constructing the Proton Synchrotron (PS) in CERN's early days. In
1968, and after several years heading a fusion laboratory in the UK, he came
back to Geneva to pilot the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) project to approval
and then to direct its construction. By the time of his early death in 1984 he
had built the two flagship proton accelerators at CERN and, during the second
of his terms as Director-General, he laid the groundwork for the
proton-antiproton collider which led to the discovery of the intermediate
vector boson. How did someone without any formal academic qualification achieve
this? What was the magic behind his leadership? The speaker, who worked many
years alongside him, will discuss these questions and speculate on how Sir John

Static and dynamic helicopter airframe analysis with NASTRAN
The use of NASTRAN at Bell Helicopter Company for structural static and dynamic analysis of a helicopter airframe is described. Analysis of airframe internal loads, main rotor isolation systems, and airframe vibration is discussed. The use of each rigid format for these types of analysis is summarized. Suggested improvements to NASTRAN to increase its effectiveness in performing helicopter airframe analysis are given

modules over a characteristic zero field in which
is not a root of unity. This generalizes the classification result of
Benkart, Britten and Lemire in the non quantum case. We also show that any
infinite-dimensional irreducible completely pointed
can be obtained from some irreducible completely pointed module over the

Grasshoppers Feeding on Red Pine Trees in Michigan (Orthoptera: Acrididae)
Very few North American grasshoppers are true feeders on conifers. The several species of the punctulatus species-group of the genus Melanoplus, as summarized and revised by Rehn (1946), have been reported as occurring on pine, juniper, and cedar, but few reports of actual feeding on conifers have appeared in the literature. Because of this paucity of information regarding the use of conifers as food for grasshoppers, we summarize here observations of several kinds of grasshoppers feeding on red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton) in 1966 in Michigan

Development of thermal control methods for specialized components and scientific instruments at very low temperatures (follow-on)
Many payloads currently proposed to be flown by the space shuttle system require long-duration cooling in the 3 to 200 K temperature range. Common requirements also exist for certain DOD payloads. Parametric design and optimization studies are reported for multistage and diode heat pipe radiator systems designed to operate in this temperature range. Also optimized are ground test systems for two long-life passive thermal control concepts operating under specified space environmental conditions. The ground test systems evaluated are ultimately intended to evolve into flight test qualification prototypes for early shuttle flights
