Non-Gaussian numerical errors versus mass hierarchy
We probe the numerical errors made in renormalization group calculations by
varying slightly the rescaling factor of the fields and rescaling back in order
to get the same (if there were no round-off errors) zero momentum 2-point
function (magnetic susceptibility). The actual calculations were performed with
Dyson's hierarchical model and a simplified version of it. We compare the
distributions of numerical values obtained from a large sample of rescaling
factors with the (Gaussian by design) distribution of a random number generator
and find significant departures from the Gaussian behavior. In addition, the
average value differ (robustly) from the exact answer by a quantity which is of
the same order as the standard deviation. We provide a simple model in which
the errors made at shorter distance have a larger weight than those made at
larger distance. This model explains in part the non-Gaussian features and why
the central-limit theorem does not apply.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, uses Revte
Quantum Fluctuations of Particles and Fields in Smooth Path Integrals
An approach to evaluation of the smooth Feynman path integrals is developed
for the study of quantum fluctuations of particles and fields in Euclidean
time-space. The paths are described by sum of Gauss functions and are weighted
with exp(-S) by appropriate methods. The weighted smooth paths reproduce
properties of the ground state of the harmonic oscillator in one dimension with
high accuracy. Quantum fluctuations of U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields in four

Developments in linear and integer programming
In this review we describe recent developments in linear and integer (linear) programming. For over 50 years Operational Research practitioners have made use of linear optimisation models to aid decision making and over this period the size of problems that can be solved has increased dramatically, the time required to solve problems has decreased substantially and the flexibility of modelling and solving systems has increased steadily. Large models are no longer confined to large computers, and the flexibility of optimisation systems embedded in other decision support tools has made on-line decision making using linear programming a reality (and using integer programming a possibility). The review focuses on recent developments in algorithms, software and applications and investigates some connections between linear optimisation and other technologies
The public library, exclusion and empathy: a literature review
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the literature within the fields of public librarianship, social exclusion and empathy.
Design/methodology/approach – The cross-disciplinary review involved the consultation of material from disciplines including library and information management, politics, social policy and social sciences, cultural studies, psychology, management and organizational theory. It was structured according to the following themes: exclusion, inclusion and social policy, social inclusion in public services and the cultural sector, the role of public libraries in social inclusion and professional empathy and the public library service.
Findings –The concept of social inclusion remains at the core of public library policy and strategy, and is embedded in contemporary social theory. Conflicting views have emerged as to the perceived and actual role of the public library in combating social exclusion, with a need expressed for research to be conducted that bridges the gap between the “philosophical” interpretations of community librarianship and the more practical, “real world” studies, in order to fully understand the concept of community librarianship. A critical link is made between social inclusion and public librarianship to professional empathy.
Research limitations/implications – The paper provides an edited version of the overall literature review, yet it is felt that it would be of theoretical and practical relevance and value to the professional and academic communities.
Originality/value – Empathy is a relatively new concept in librarianship research, and prior to the study of which this review forms a part only limited findings have been available
Interpolation Parameter and Expansion for the Three Dimensional Non-Trivial Scalar Infrared Fixed Point
We compute the non--trivial infrared --fixed point by means of an
interpolation expansion in fixed dimension. The expansion is formulated for an
infinitesimal momentum space renormalization group. We choose a coordinate
representation for the fixed point interaction in derivative expansion, and
compute its coordinates to high orders by means of computer algebra. We compute
the series for the critical exponent up to order twenty five of
interpolation expansion in this representation, and evaluate it using \pade,
Borel--\pade, Borel--conformal--\pade, and Dlog--\pade resummation. The

Pre-operative optimisation employing dopexamine or adrenaline for patients undergoing major elective surgery: a cost-effectiveness analysis
<b>Objective</b>: To compare the cost and cost-effectiveness of a policy of pre-operative optimisation of oxygen delivery (using either adrenaline or dopexamine) to reduce the risk associated with major elective surgery, in high-risk patients. <b>Methods</b>: A cost-effectiveness analysis using data from a randomised controlled trial (RCT). In the RCT 138 patients undergoing major elective surgery were allocated to receive pre-operative optimisation employing either adrenaline or dopexamine (assigned randomly), or to receive routine peri-operative care. Differential health service costs were based on trial data on the number and cause of hospital in-patient days and the utilisation of health care resources. These were costed using unit costs from a UK hospital. The cost-effectiveness analysis related differential costs to differential life-years during a 2 year trial follow-up. <b>Results</b>: The mean number of in-patient days was 16 in the pre-optimised groups (19 adrenaline; 13 dopexamine) and 22 in the standard care group. The number (%) of deaths, over a 2 year follow-up, was 24 (26%) in the pre-optimised groups and 15 (33%) in the standard care group. The mean total costs were EUR 11,310 in the pre-optimised groups and EUR 16,965 in the standard care group. Life-years were 1.68 in the pre-optimised groups and 1.46 in the standard care group. The probability that pre-operative optimisation is less costly than standard care is 98%. The probability that it dominates standard care is 93%. Conclusions: Based on resource use and effectiveness data collected in the trial, pre-operative optimisation of high-risk surgical patients undergoing major elective surgery is cost-effective compared with standard treatment
Predicting field performance of five irrigated tree species using seedling quality assessment in Burkina Faso, West Africa
Five exotic tree species (Acacia angustissima (Mil.) Kuntze, Acacia mangium Wild, Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Alp., Leucaena hybrid (LxL), and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit) were investigated to determine whether parameters of nursery seedling stock quality could be used to predict their field performance in a plantation irrigated with treated waste-water to produce fodder and wood. Plants were grown in the nursery in two contrasting rooting substrates (ordinary nursery soil and sand), predicted to have different effects on resource allocation. Three categories of morphological indicators were measured, i.e. plant dimensions (height, diameter, root length), plant weights (shoot, root and whole plant weights) and indices (sturdiness quotient ‘SQ’, shoot:root dry weight ratio ‘SRR’ and Dickson’s quality index ‘DQI’). In the nursery, all species performed better in the ordinary nursery soil for all growth parameters except root length. Thus ordinary nursery substrate appeared superior to sand in terms of plant quality. However, a follow up at plantation phase revealed that only some morphological attributes or ratios were suitable to predict field performance for the five tested species in irrigated plantation. In addition, the effect of the substrate observed at the nursery stage had disappeared 12 months after out planting due to the availability of water and nutrients provided by the treated waste water used for the irrigation. The results showed that root collar diameter and DQI appeared to be the most appropriate indicators to predict the outplanting performance of the five tested species in a short-rotation irrigated plantation in semi-arid Burkina Faso. Mean-Motion Resonances of High Order in Extrasolar Planetary Systems
Many multi-planet systems have been discovered in recent years. Some of them
are in mean-motion resonances (MMR). Planet formation theory was successful in
explaining the formation of 2:1, 3:1 and other low resonances as a result of
convergent migration. However, higher order resonances require high initial
orbital eccentricities in order to be formed by this process and these are in
general unexpected in a dissipative disk. We present a way of generating large
initial eccentricities using additional planets. This procedure allows us to
