    Orbital frustration in the S = ½ kagome magnet vesignieite, BaCu3V2O8(OH)2

    Here we report crystallographic and magnetic studies on high quality samples of the magnetically frustrated S = ½ kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, BaCu3V2O8(OD)2. Powder neutron diffraction data collected from samples obtained by a new hydrothermal synthetic route reveal a previously unobserved trigonal P3121 structure, similar to the isoelectronic mineral SrCu3V2O8(OH)2. The refined structure is consistent with orbital frustration of the eg d-orbitals in a sublattice of the Cu2+ kagome network due to a dynamic Jahn–Teller effect, which persists below the magnetic transition at TN = 9 K and makes the material an interesting candidate for exploring concomitant spin and orbital frustration. A combination of crystallographic strain analysis and magnetisation measurements indicate strong magnetostructural coupling which may explain the varied magnetic behaviour between samples of vesignieite in the literature. The revised orbital structure is similar to that found in volborthite, rather than the quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite, and provides a convincing argument for the differing magnetic properties found in these frustrated magnets

    Magnetic structures of NaLMnWO_6 perovskites (L=La,Nd,Tb)

    The magnetic structures of the perovskites NaLaMnWO_6, NaNdMnWO_6, and NaTbMnWO_6, with rocksalt ordering of the Mn/W ions and layered ordering of Na and the rare-earth ions, have been determined by neutron powder diffraction. The manganese moments in NaLaMnWO_6 order below 10 K with a propagation vector of k_14=(1/2,0,1/2) and a moment of 3.99μB per Mn^2+ ion. The Mn^2+ and Nd^3+ ions order simultaneously in NaNdMnWO_6 at 11 K. The resulting magnetic structure is incommensurate with the underlying crystal structure and has the propagation vector of k_5=(0,0.48,1/2). NaTbMnWO_6 undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at 15 and 9 K. The structure determined at 11 K is based on two propagation vectors of k_14=(1/2,0,1/2) and k_5=(0,0.427,1/2). Upon cooling at 6 K the incommensurate vector is no longer present and the moments order only according to k_14. The moments of the Nd and Tb ions are found to remain within the planes of the A-site cations, and in NaTbMnWO_6 the Mn moments also lie within the xy plane. This study not only reveals magnetic structures with previously unexplored topologies but it also sheds light on the intricate coupling between the two magnetic sublattices

    Structural and magnetic studies of the frustrated S = 1 kagome magnet NH4Ni2Mo2O10H3.

    The strong geometric frustration of the kagome antiferromagnets (KAFMs) can destabilise conventional magnetic order and lead to exotic electronic states, such as the quantum spin-liquid state observed in some S = 1/2 KAFM materials. However, the ground state of S = 1 KAFM systems are less well understood. Spin nematic phases and valence bond solid ground states have been predicted to form but a paucity of experimental realisations restricts understanding. Here, the S = 1 KAFM NH4Ni2Mo2O10H3 is presented, which has the 3-fold symmetry of the kagome lattice but significant site depletion, with ∼ 64 % site occupancy. Frustration and a competition between exchange interactions are evidenced through the suppression of order below the Weiss temperature |θW| and observation of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic characteristics in the magnetisation data. A semi spin glass ground state is predicted based on the ac-field frequency dependence of the magnetic transition and ferromagnetic signal

    Size and Structure of the Narrow-Line Region of Quasars

    We have observed the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of the seven brightest radio-quiet PG (or BQS) quasars (z < 0.5) with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Linear-ramp filters were used to image the [OIII] lambda 5007 line emission with 0.0455-0.1 arcsec pixel resolution. We find that the NLRs are very compact with typical extents of 2-4 arcsec. Two quasars show compact filamentary structures similar to Seyfert NLRs. They may be related to radio outflows. Most interestingly, when including a sample of Seyfert galaxies observed with HST, we tentatively find that the size of the NLR is proportional to the square root of the [OIII] luminosity. This is comparable to the scaling found for the size of the broad-line region with continuum luminosity, which has been interpreted in terms of a constant photoionization parameter. The relation determined here connects the NLR of radio-quiet quasars and Seyferts over three orders of magnitude in [OIII] luminosity.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Public health messages during a global emergency through an online community: a discourse and sentiment analysis

    The growing popularity of social media and its ubiquitous presence in our lives brings associated risks such as the spread of mis- and disinformation, particularly when these may be unregulated in times of global crises. Online communities are able to provide support by enabling connection with others and also provide great potential for dynamic interaction and timely dissemination of information compared with more traditional methods. This study evaluates interactions within the Essex Coronavirus Action/Support Facebook private group, which set out to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection by informing Essex residents of guidance and helping vulnerable individuals. At the outset, 18 community administrators oversaw the group, which attracted approximately 37,900 members. Longitudinal Facebook group interactions across five periods spanning the UK lockdowns 2020–2021 were analysed using psychological discourse analysis and supplementary computed-mediated analysis to further explore sentiment and linguistic features. The findings endorsed that the group provided a protected space for residents to express their feelings in times of crises and an opportunity to address confusion and concern. The effective communication of public health messages was facilitated by promoting desired interaction and the construction of group identities. Administrators worked with group members to achieve a shared understanding of others' perspectives and the COVID-19 evidence base, which led to a mobilisation of the provision of support in the community. This was accomplished through the application of rhetorical and interactional devices. This study demonstrates how online groups can employ discursive strategies to engage audiences, build cohesion, provide support, and encourage health protective behaviours. This has implications for public health teams in terms of designing, implementing, or evaluating such interventions

    Provision of artificial shelter on beaches is associated with improved shorebird fledging success

    Artificial chick shelters might improve productivity of beach-nesting birds threatened by anthropogenic disturbance. We investigated the efficacy of three different chick shelter designs against four criteria: accessibility to chicks over time, thermal insulation, conspicuousness to beach-goers, and practicality (cost and ease of transport). One design (&lsquo;A-frame&rsquo;) was selected because it offered the greatest thermal insulation, was the least conspicuous, most cost effective, and performed equally well in terms of accessibility. We deployed these artificial shelters on Hooded Plover Thinornis rubricollis territories where broods were present (n 5 11), and compared the behaviour and survival rate of chicks to that at control sites (n 5 10). We were unable to discern any difference in the behaviour of broods when artificial shelters were available. However, the survival rate of chicks to fledging was 71.8% higher where an artificial shelter was provided (n 5 21 broods). This was validated by analysing data from a larger sample of broods monitored as part of an active volunteer-based management programme; shelters conferred a 42.8%increase in survival to fledging (n 5 81 broods). Thus, artificial shelters have the potential to increase survival rates of threatened shorebird chicks, though the mechanisms through which survival is increased require further investigation
