    Comment on "Existence of Internal Modes of Sine-Gordon Kinks"

    In Ref.[1] [Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 42}, 2290 (1990)] we used a rigorous projection operator collective variable formalism for nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations to prove the continuum Sine-Gordon (SG) equation has a long lived quasimode whose frequency ωs\omega_s= 1.004 Γ0\Gamma_0 is in the continuum just above the lower phonon band edge with a lifetime (1/τs1/\tau_s) = 0.0017 Γ0\Gamma_0. We confirmed the analytic calculations by simulations which agreed very closely with the analytic results. In Ref.[3] [Phys. Rev. E. {\bf 62}, R60 (2000)] the authors performed two numerical investigations which they asserted ``show that neither intrinsic internal modes nor quasimodes exist in contrast to previous results.'' In this paper we prove their first numerical investigation could not possibly observe the quasimode in principle and their second numerical investigation actually demonstrates the existence of the SG quasimode. Our analytic calculations and verifying simulations were performed for a stationary Sine-Gordon soliton fixed at the origin. Yet the authors in Ref.[3] state the explanation of our analytic simulations and confirming simulations are due to the Doppler shift of the phonons emitted by our stationary Sine-Gordon soliton which thus has a zero Doppler shift.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Phys.     In foreign crop condition monitoring, satellite acquired imagery is routinely used. To facilitate interpretation of this imagery, it is advantageous to have estimates of the crop types and their extent for small area units, i.e., grid cells on a map represent, at 60 deg latitude, an area nominally 25 by 25 nautical miles in size. The feasibility of imputing historical crop statistics, soils information, and other ancillary data to crop area for a province in Argentina is studied

    Over the last 14 years, Universities and colleges have organised school placements and award qualifications whilst teachers, acting as mentors take the lead in guiding, supervising and assessing students on lengthy teaching placements. Partnership developed quickly in response to legislation and Sheffield Hallam University was among the first of the Universities to 'sign up' to the new partnership model in 1992. The Partnership Survey 2006 reported on in this paper has focussed on the Senior Liaison Tutor with a view to finding out their views on their role, and perceived contributions to the quality assurance of the partnership. The survey focussed on some of the key issues identified in previous studies and meetings of the Partnership Management Board.</p

    Closed loop fiber optic rotation sensor

    An improved optical gyroscope is provided, of the type that passes two light components in opposite directions through an optic fiber coil, and which adds a small variable frequency to one of the light components to cancel the phase shift due to rotation of the coil. The amount of coil rotation from an initial orientation, is accurately determined by combining the two light components, one of which has a slightly increased frequency, to develop beats that each represent a predetermined angle of rotation. The direction of rotation is obtained by combining the two light components on a photodetector, intermittently phase shifting a single light component by 90 deg and comparing the direction of change of photodetector output (+ or -) caused by the 90 deg shift, with the slope (+ or -) of the photodetector output at about the same time, when there is a 90 deg shift

    The role of the initial teacher training co-ordinator: secondary headteachers' and ITT co-ordinators' perspectives

    The roles of ITT co-ordinator (ITTC) and CPD co-ordinator have become well established in secondary schools in England. However there is usually a separation of responsibilities for these areas within schools. The introduction of a new Standards Framework and other government policies such as the remodelling of the workforce in schools (DfES, 2003, TDA, 2007a) provide schools with opportunity to revisit these roles. A consequence of remodelling has been a rapid expansion of support staff in schools to assist teachers and one aspect of this contractual change is that support staff are taking on administrative tasks, formerly done by teachers. A further aspect is that CPD Coordinators now have responsibility for staff development cross the wider workforce. During 2007, Schools have used remodelling as an opportunity to review their management structures throughout the school including the organisation of staff development and how the school is contributing to the training of new teachers. In this paper we consider how the role of the ITTC is changing using data from interviews with Head Teachers and ITTCs from a sample of secondary schools that are in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. Data collection took place in April and May 2007.</p

    Developing enterprise culture in a northern educational authority in the UK: involving trainee teachers in learning-orientated evaluation

    In this paper we discuss our use of innovative methods - at least in the context of regeneration evaluation - to help evaluate an enterprise project in northern England, paying particular attention to the involvement of trainee teachers. We discuss the methods used and critically appraise the methods and methodology, present some emerging findings from the trainee teachers strand and conclude by discussing the place of what might be termed 'learning-orientated evaluation' in relation to the currently dominant output-focussed evaluation paradigm.</p

    Laser pulse detection method and apparatus

    A sensor is described for detecting the difference in phase of a pair of returned light pulse components, such as the two components of a light pulse of an optical gyro. In an optic gyro, the two light components have passed in opposite directions through a coil of optical fiber, with the difference in phase of the returned light components determining the intensity of light shining on the sensor. The sensor includes a CCD (charge coupled device) that receives the pair of returned light components to generate a charge proportional to the number of photons in the received light. The amount of the charge represents the phase difference between the two light components. At a time after the transmission of the light pulse and before the expected time of arrival of the interfering light components, charge accumulating in the CCD as a result of reflections from optical components in the system, are repeatedly removed from the CCD, by transferring out charges in the CCD and dumping these charges
