Vortex Fluctuations in the Critical Casimir Effect of Superfluid and Superconducting Films
Vortex-loop renormalization techniques are used to calculate the magnitude of
the critical Casimir forces in superfluid films. The force is found to become
appreciable when size of the thermal vortex loops is comparable to the film
thickness, and the results for T < Tc are found to match very well with
perturbative renormalization theories that have only been carried out for T >
Tc. When applied to a high-Tc superconducting film connected to a bulk sample,
the Casimir force causes a voltage difference to appear between the film and
bulk, and estimates show that this may be readily measurable.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Revtex 4, typo correctio
Thermistor holder for skin-temperature measurements
Sensing head of thermistor probe is supported in center area of plastic ring which has tabs so that it can be anchored in place by rubber bands or adhesive tapes. Device attaches probes to human subjects practically, reliably, and without affecting characteristics of skin segment being measured
System for and method of freezing biological tissue
Biological tissue is frozen while a polyethylene bag placed in abutting relationship against opposed walls of a pair of heaters. The bag and tissue are cooled with refrigerating gas at a time programmed rate at least equal to the maximum cooling rate needed at any time during the freezing process. The temperature of the bag, and hence of the tissue, is compared with a time programmed desired value for the tissue temperature to derive an error indication. The heater is activated in response to the error indication so that the temperature of the tissue follows the desired value for the time programmed tissue temperature. The tissue is heated to compensate for excessive cooling of the tissue as a result of the cooling by the refrigerating gas. In response to the error signal, the heater is deactivated while the latent heat of fusion is being removed from the tissue while the tissue is changing phase from liquid to solid
Chern-Simons Invariants of Closed Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds
The Chern-Simons invariants of irreducible U(n)- flat connections on compact
hyperbolic 3-manifolds of the form {\Gamma}\H^3 are derived. The explicit
formula for the Chern-Simons functional is given in terms of Selberg type zeta
functions related to the twisted eta invariants of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer.Comment: 10 pages, 2 diagram
Energy and environmental burdens of organic and non-organic agriculture and horticulture
Production of 10 major commodities in England and Wales was studied using Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Organic and non-organic (contemporary conventional) systems were compared. Organic production was generally less energy consuming, except for poultry meat, eggs and tomatoes. Environmental burdens, such as global warming potential or eutrophication were often greater per unit of production from organic than non-organic systems
