Notes on \u3ci\u3eChrysomelobia Labidomerae\u3c/i\u3e (Acari: Heterostigmata: Podapolipidae), Parasites of \u3ci\u3eLabidomera Clivicollis\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Michigan and Wisconsin
Chrysomelobia labidomerae Eickwort, ectoparasitic mite of chrysomelid beetles, is reported from 11 Wisconsin counties, from 16 of 82 adult Labidomera clivicollis (Kirby) beetles wild-caught in Wisconsin, and from 27 of 141 presumably wild-caught L. clivicollis beetles from 13 Michigan counties. Wisconsin beetles harboring C. labidomerae were found in dry to wet-mesic, open habitats. A distribution map and comments are presented

The Unwelcome Involuntary Guest
The facts of the case are as spare and clean cut as though invented to raise its issue. Joyce Akins, sixteen, was invited by Robbie Hemphill to ride with him in his car; it was not until they had proceeded some way on their journey that she discovered he was intoxicated and driving in an incressingly reckless manner. Frightened, she demanded repeatedly to be let out; he heard, refused, increased his speed, and presently collided with the rear of another car to Joyce\u27s severe and permanent injury. A general demurrer to her complaint was sustained and upon her refusal to plead further judgment was entered dismissing her action. This judgment was affirmed en banc on appeal. It is a clear guest statute problem, uncontaminated by any suggestion of contributory negligence or assumption of risk, and, since on demurrer, without the usual controversy over the facts. It offers an unparalleled opportunity for an analysis of the host-guest relationship, a thoughtful probing into the background and purposes of the statute itself. Instead, the majority opinion is content to rest upon authority we are committed (to the rule) that when she became a guest of the respondent driver, she became one for the entire journey, and did not terminate the host-guest relationship by her demands. This is a neat and economical solution, but to make it also an acceptable one it is necessary to inquire into the matter of whether the court is in fact committed to the rule it cites, and secondly, even if it is so committed, whether that rule is a sensible one
Loss of axons in the cat optic nerve following fetal unilateral enucleation: an electron microscopic analysis
Journal ArticleBetween the 48th day of gestation (E-48) and maturity, the number of axons in the cat optic nerve is reduced by approximately 50%. On the basis of an electron microscopic assay, the axon population of the E-48 nerve was estimated to be 328,000. In contrast, estimates from two normal adults were 159,000 and 158,000. In utero unilateral enucleation (at E-45 and E-46) attenuated the severity of this loss since the optic nerves of the experimental animals contained 200,000 and 198,000 fibers

Complex trait analysis of the mouse striatum: independent QTLs modulate volume and neuron number
Background: The striatum plays a pivotal role in modulating motor activity and higher cognitive function. We analyzed variation in striatal volume and neuron number in mice and initiated a complex trait analysis to discover polymorphic genes that modulate the structure of the basal ganglia. Results: Brain weight, brain and striatal volume, neuron-packing density and number were estimated bilaterally using unbiased stereological procedures in five inbred strains (A/J, C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, BALB/cJ, and BXD5) and an F2 intercross between A/J and BXD5. Striatal volume ranged from 20 to 37 mm[super]3. Neuron-packing density ranged from approximately 50,000 to 100,000 neurons/mm[super]3, and the striatal neuron population ranged from 1.4 to 2.5 million. Inbred animals with larger brains had larger striata but lower neuron-packing density resulting in a narrow range of average neuron populations. In contrast, there was a strong positive correlation between volume and neuron number among intercross progeny. We mapped two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) with selective effects on striatal architecture. Bsc10a maps to the central region of Chr 10 (LRS of 17.5 near D10Mit186) and has intense effects on striatal volume and moderate effects on brain volume. Stnn19a maps to distal Chr 19 (LRS of 15 at D19Mit123) and is associated with differences of up to 400,000 neurons among animals. Conclusion: We have discovered remarkable numerical and volumetric variation in the mouse striatum, and we have been able to map two QTLs that modulate independent anatomic parameters
