    Internet Access and Use by Farm Households

    The Internet is a strategic technology because it has found application across virtually all sectors of the economy. The Internet has become an everyday part of rural life and is an important new technology in U.S. agriculture. This study uses information collected through the 2004 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) to explore the adoption of computers with Internet access and Internet use by farm households. Results from this study suggest that adoption of computers with Internet access is positively related to age and educational level of the operator, off-farm business income, presence of a spouse, and regional location of the farm. Further, large farms and part-owner farms are more likely to adopt computers with Internet access. Internet use for the farm, household, or both is strongly related to the educational level of the operator and spouse, presence of teenagers in the household, farm size, and regional location of the farm.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

    Developmental Flight Test of a Powered Approach Stability Augmentation System on the U.S. Navy\u27s E- 2C Hawkeye 2000 Aircraft

    The E-2C aircraft is a Navy carrier based high-wing, twin engine turboprop powered aircraft used for the Airborne Early Warning (AEW) mission. In the power approach configuration, the aircraft displays strong adverse yaw, weak directional stability, and excessive rudder control power. These antagonistic characteristics, when coupled together, result in an extremely high workload for the pilot during both carrier and field landings. Although the aircraft has a yaw axis stability augmentation system, it is currently only applicable to cruise conditions. Engaging the stability augmentation in the power approach configuration results in a 1 Hz directional oscillation due to the system’s high gain schedule. Additionally, another attribute of the existing system design results in extremely high rudder pedal forces while maintaining sideslip in crosswind conditions. Northrop Grumman developed Flight Control Computer (FCC) software patches designed to improve the handling qualities on landing approaches. These patches are designed to change the rudder control gain schedule to allow the use of stability augmentation in the power approach configuration and suppress the divergent Phugoid characteristic throughout the flight envelope. The system is a directional axis controller only and termed the Powered Approach Stability Augmentation System (PASAS). Initial flight tests on a developmental system provided the design parameters for the production system, which was eventually installed in the Navy’s newest E-2C variant, termed Hawkeye 2000. The ensuing flight test program consisted of land based test flights during the summer of 2001, and culminated in a ship trial consisting of multiple landings on the USS Truman in March of 2002

    Technology Adoption, Management Practices, and Financial Performance of New and Beginning Farmers: Evidence from a National Survey

    More than 50 percent of current farmers are over age 55, and the number of new farmers replacing them has fallen. This paper examines factors that contribute to the financial performance of new and beginning farmers in the U.S. A weighted regression analysis was used on data from the 2005 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) to measure new and beginning farmers financial performance given farm and operator characteristics, production and marketing, and risk management strategies. Particular attention was given to the impact of technology adoption and management strategy on financial performance.     The Internet is becoming an increasingly important management tool in production agriculture. Using data from the 2004 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) and a double-hurdle estimation approach, we explore the adoption of computers with Internet access by and Internet purchasing patterns of farm households. Adoption of the Internet is positively related to age and education of the operator, off-farm work, presence of spouse, participation in government programs, farm size, and regional location of the farm. Internet purchasing patterns of farm households are positively related to the education of the operator and spouse, presence of teenagers, and regional location of the farm. There are multiple variants of this result, including Speicher’s result for noncrossing partitions, as well as analogues of the Exponential Formula for series-reduced planar trees and forests. In this paper we use these formulae to give generating functions for contracted Grassmannian trees and forests, certain graphs whose vertices are decorated with a helicity. Along the way we enumerate bipartite planar trees and forests, and we apply our results to enumerate various families of permutations: for example, bipartite planar trees are in bijection with separable permutations. It is postulated by Livia Ferro, Tomasz Łukowski and Robert Moerman (2020) that contracted Grassmannian forests are in bijection with boundary strata of the momentum amplituhedron, an object encoding the tree-level S-matrix of maximally supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory. With this assumption, our results give a rank generating function for the boundary strata of the momentum amplituhedron, and imply that the Euler characteristic of the momentum amplituhedron is 1.Peer reviewe

    Commensal observing with the Allen Telescope array: software command and control

    The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) is a Large-Number-Small-Diameter radio telescope array currently with 42 individual antennas and 5 independent back-end science systems (2 imaging FX correlators and 3 time domain beam formers) located at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory (HCRO). The goal of the ATA is to run multiple back-ends simultaneously, supporting multiple science projects commensally. The primary software control systems are based on a combination of Java, JRuby and Ruby on Rails. The primary control API is simplified to provide easy integration with new back-end systems while the lower layers of the software stack are handled by a master observing system. Scheduling observations for the ATA is based on finding a union between the science needs of multiple projects and automatically determining an efficient path to operating the various sub-components to meet those needs.     The design of a knowledge-based guidance system for an intelligent multiple objective decision support system (IMODSS)

    This paper describes a project that extends the multiple objective decision support system (MODSS) by offering knowledge-based guidance to an intelligent multiple objective decision support system (IMODSS). This IMODSS integrates expert system (ES), multiple objective decision-making (MODM) methodologies, graphical user interface (GUI) and decision support systems (DSS) technologies. This IMODSS uses an expert system shell CLIPS to build a knowledge base to guide the decision-makers (DMs) to select the most suitable MODM method(s) from the MODM methodology base in order to solve their particular decision problems.     Use of normalized word vector approach in document classification for an LKMC

    In order to realize the objective of expanding library services to provide knowledge managementsupport for small businesses, a series of requirements must be met. This particular phase of a largerresearch project focuses on one of the requirements: the need for a document classificationsystem to rapidly determine the content of digital documents. Document classification techniquesare examined to assess the available alternatives for realization of Library Knowledge ManagementCenters (LKMCs). After evaluating prominent techniques the authors opted to investigate aless well-known method, the Normalized Word Vector (NWV) approach, which has been usedsuccessfully in classifying highly unstructured documents, i.e., student essays. The authors proposeutilizing the NWV approach for LKMC automatic document classification with the goal ofdeveloping a system whereby unfamiliar documents can be quickly classified into existing topiccategories.     Equity in Distance Education During COVID-19

    The COVID-19 pandemic forced districts, schools, and teachers to mobilize in order to deal with the digital inequities that have existed for decades. At the beginning stages of technological advances in education, the so-called digital divide related more to access to technology and equipment. Utilizing the phenomenological approach to qualitative research, this study examines the experiences of educators who served students with differing experiences and needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Total of 14 (N) educators (including adminstrators, teachers, and counselors) participated likert style questionaires. 11 of 14 participated in focus group interviews.
