    Data breaches and identity theft

    This paper presents a monetary-theoretic model to study the implications of networks' collection of personal identifying data and data security on each other's incidence and costs of identity theft. To facilitate trade, agents join clubs (networks) that compile and secure data. Too much data collection and too little security arise in equilibrium with noncooperative networks compared with the efficient allocation. A number of potential remedies are analyzed: mandated limits on the amount of data collected, mandated security levels, reallocations of data-breach costs, and data sharing through a merger of the networks.

    The intrinsic value of HFO features as a biomarker of epileptic activity

    High frequency oscillations (HFOs) are a promising biomarker of epileptic brain tissue and activity. HFOs additionally serve as a prototypical example of challenges in the analysis of discrete events in high-temporal resolution, intracranial EEG data. Two primary challenges are 1) dimensionality reduction, and 2) assessing feasibility of classification. Dimensionality reduction assumes that the data lie on a manifold with dimension less than that of the feature space. However, previous HFO analyses have assumed a linear manifold, global across time, space (i.e. recording electrode/channel), and individual patients. Instead, we assess both a) whether linear methods are appropriate and b) the consistency of the manifold across time, space, and patients. We also estimate bounds on the Bayes classification error to quantify the distinction between two classes of HFOs (those occurring during seizures and those occurring due to other processes). This analysis provides the foundation for future clinical use of HFO features and buides the analysis for other discrete events, such as individual action potentials or multi-unit activity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Rural Parents’ Perceived Stigma of Seeking Mental Health Services for Their Children: Development and Evaluation of a New Instrument

    The purpose of our research was to examine the validity of score interpretations of an instrument developed to measure parents’ perceptions of stigma about seeking mental health services for their children. The validity of the score interpretations of the instrument was tested in 2 studies. Study 1 employed confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), using a split half approach, and construct and criterion validity on data from the entire sample of parents in rural Appalachia whose children were experiencing psychosocial concerns (N = 347), while Study 2 employed CFA, construct and criterion validity, and predictive validity of the scores on data from a general sample of parents in rural Appalachia (N = 184). Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed support for a 2-factor model of parents’ perceived stigma, which represented both self and public forms of stigma associated with seeking mental health services for their children, and correlated with existing measures of stigma and other psychosocial variables. Further, the new self and public stigma scale significantly predicted parents’ willingness to seek services for children

    Photolysis of derivatives of dimethylmalonate thiophene-S,C-ylide provides dicarbomethoxycarbene, which can react with thiophene to form dimethyl (2-thienyl)malonate. By generation of dicarbomethoxycarbene from the dibenzothiophene-based ylide in neat thiophene, it is shown that the thienylmalonate is not a product of rearrangement of the thiophene ylide, in contrast to thermolysis results. Formation of the thienylmalonate is suppressed by substitution of any sort in the 2- and 5-positions on the thiophene and by substitution with an electron-withdrawing substituent

    Development and Simulation Testing of a Computerized Adaptive Measure of Communicative Functioning in Aphasia

    Computerized adaptive testing (CAT), based on the mathematical framework of item response theory (IRT), has increasingly been implemented in patient reported outcome measures over the past decade (Fries, Bruce, & Cella, 2005). Given a calibrated item pool fit by an appropriate IRT measurement model, a CAT can produce reliable ability estimates more efficiently than traditional paper-and-pencil tests by administering items that are most informative given the examinee’s estimated ability level (Wainer, 2000). As conventional measures employed in the measurement of aphasia were developed under traditional measurement theory, many of these measures are long and inefficient, and are consequently unsuitable for regular clinical care. In addition, these conventional measures often fail to meet the needs of many community-dwelling stroke survivors whose impairments falls outside the range reliably measured by these tests (Doyle et al. 2012). IRT-based and in particular CAT patient reported outcome measures offer the possibility of substantial improvements in measurement technology for persons with aphasia
