STATE-LEVEL ANALYSIS OF NATIONAL BEEF POLICY: THE USE OF STATE ECONOMETRIC MODELS
Interest has grown in analyzing the impact of national imports of foreign beef on state agricultural sectors. In this study, an interfaced Hawaiian-national model is simulated for a change in national beef imports. Hawaiian and national impacts demonstrate wide variation in both sign and magnitude. Usefulness of state models is emphasized for situations where state impacts of national policies are of interest.Agricultural and Food Policy,
THE EFFECTS OF ALTERNATIVE BEEF IMPORT QUOTA REGIMES ON THE BEEF INDUSTRIES OF THE AGGREGATE UNITED STATES AND HAWAII
The effects of the 1964 and 1979 beef import laws on the beef industries of the aggregate United States and Hawaii are simulated for 1972-81 by linking Hawaii and national econometric models. Although impacts are slight for both models, Hawaii beef prices and production appear to be less affected by changes in beef import rules.International Relations/Trade, Livestock Production/Industries,
Andreev's Theorem on hyperbolic polyhedra
In 1970, E. M. Andreev published a classification of all three-dimensional
compact hyperbolic polyhedra having non-obtuse dihedral angles. Given a
combinatorial description of a polyhedron, , Andreev's Theorem provides five
classes of linear inequalities, depending on , for the dihedral angles,
which are necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a hyperbolic
polyhedron realizing with the assigned dihedral angles. Andreev's Theorem
also shows that the resulting polyhedron is unique, up to hyperbolic isometry.
Andreev's Theorem is both an interesting statement about the geometry of
hyperbolic 3-dimensional space, as well as a fundamental tool used in the proof
for Thurston's Hyperbolization Theorem for 3-dimensional Haken manifolds. It is
also remarkable to what level the proof of Andreev's Theorem resembles (in a
simpler way) the proof of Thurston.
We correct a fundamental error in Andreev's proof of existence and also
provide a readable new proof of the other parts of the proof of Andreev's
Theorem, because Andreev's paper has the reputation of being ``unreadable''.Comment: To appear les Annales de l'Institut Fourier. 47 pages and many

Tick borne illness in Missouri
Missouri is a hotbed for tick-borne illness given its abundance of rural geography and wildlife, especially deer. The two most frequently encountered ticks in Missouri are the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum and the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. Amblyomma related diseases in Missouri include human monocytic ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Southern Tick-Associated Rash and Illness (STARI), Tularemia, and Heartland Virus. Dermacentor ticks are capable of transmitting RMSF and Tularemia
Democratic Counterinsurgents: How Democracies Can Prevail in Irregular Warfare
This dissertation answers the question of whether or not democracies can win counterinsurgency conflicts. This is done first through an analysis of the arguments made by those who claim that democracies are uniquely incapable of doing so due to various limitations imposed by public opinion as well as the arguments of those who argue that democracies can win such conflicts given the correct strategy. Secondly, the question is investigated through an examination of three case studies: Malaysia, Vietnam, and Iraq. This analysis demonstrates that the arguments against the ability of democracies to win counterinsurgencies is not as strong as many scholars currently believe. Secondly, this research demonstrates that a population-based, culturally-informed, counterinsurgency strategy provides a plausible avenue of victory for democratic states faced with insurgencies. Though such a strategy cannot guarantee success, the more closely it is followed the more likely success will be
ESTIMATING EXTERNAL COSTS OF MUNICIPAL LANDFILL SITING THROUGH CONTINGENT VALUATION ANALYSIS: A CASE STUDY
Much of the solid waste stream in the United States is generated by metropolitan areas, while associated landfills are often located in adjacent rural communities. Landfill disposal of municipal solid waste often creates external costs to nearby residents. Contingent valuation was used to estimate external costs of siting a landfill in the Carter community of Knox County, Tennessee. Estimates of annual external costs were 141 more than those who used piped city water or bottled water.Public Economics,
