    A Career Eulogy Reflective Exercise: A View into Early Professional Identity Formation

    Beginning medical students have a very early idea of what their physician identity will be. Providing a brief structured opportunity to reflect on the end of their career can be an important first step in identity formation. A reflective exercise was used in the summer prior to beginning medical school as each class of students at a regional rural medical school began a summer prematriculation program from 2015-2019. Students wrote what they wished to be said about them at the end of their career using a “Career Eulogy.” Identifiers were removed and narratives were coded into recurring text clusters by the authors. The students, on an anonymous evaluation, strongly agreed that the exercise facilitated the accomplishment of the program goals. Reflections from 42 entering medical students indicated a preference to be remembered for compassion, passion, quality, and patient relationships. Men more frequently mentioned family and enjoying life, and women more frequently mentioned patient relationships. Rural students included quality and being a teacher of medical students more frequently, and those with a physician parent included passion and community more frequently. Those who later chose family medicine as a specialty more often included references to enjoying life and family. This reflective exercise provided useful insight into early professional identity formation among these medical students and served to encourage group discussion. It could be used with larger, more diverse groups to determine its value and clarify true differences among the demographic and specialty choice patterns. This exercise could also be used annually for each student, providing a longitudinal view of identity formation

    Acute Caffeine Ingestion Increases Velocity and Power in Upper and Lower Body Free-Weight Resistance Exercises

    International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1280-1289, 2019. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of caffeine supplementation on velocity and power output during bench press and back squat exercises. Resistance trained males (n = 12) consuming less than 300 mg of caffeine daily, were recruited for this study. In a blinded crossover study design, participants supplemented with 6 mg· kg-1 caffeine or placebo (placebo, gluten-free cornstarch) 60 min prior to exercise. Participants completed 3 × 1 repetition with maximum explosive intent at 80% of their 1-RM for bench and squat exercises with two minute rest periods between each repetition. A linear position transducer was used to measure power and velocity of barbell movement. Each trial was separated by a 72 h washout period. Results indicated that mean velocity (p = 0.027; ES = 1.04) and mean power (p = 0.008; ES = 0.24) were higher during bench press exercise with caffeine versus placebo. Furthermore, mean velocity (p = 0.005; ES=1.06) and mean power (p = 0.020; ES = 0.71) values were higher for back squat exercise with caffeine versus placebo. This study suggests that caffeine ingestion imposes ergogenic benefits by increasing velocity and power in both upper and lower body resistance exercises. However, caffeine had a larger effect on lower body power output versus upper body exercise. Results may hold important implications for using caffeine during training

    Global data for ecology and epidemiology: a novel algorithm for temporal Fourier processing MODIS data

    Background. Remotely-sensed environmental data from earth-orbiting satellites are increasingly used to model the distribution and abundance of both plant and animal species, especially those of economic or conservation importance. Time series of data from the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on-board NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites offer the potential to capture environmental thermal and vegetation seasonality, through temporal Fourier analysis, more accurately than was previously possible using the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor data. MODIS data are composited over 8- or 16-day time intervals that pose unique problems for temporal Fourier analysis. Applying standard techniques to MODIS data can introduce errors of up to 30% in the estimation of the amplitudes and phases of the Fourier harmonics. Methodology/Principal Findings. We present a novel spline-based algorithm that overcomes the processing problems of composited MODIS data. The algorithm is tested on artificial data generated using randomly selected values of both amplitudes and phases, and provides an accurate estimate of the input variables under all conditions. The algorithm was then applied to produce layers that capture the seasonality in MODIS data for the period from 2001 to 2005. Conclusions/Significance. Global temporal Fourier processed images of 1 km MODIS data for Middle Infrared Reflectance, day- and night-time Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) are presented for ecological and epidemiological applications. The finer spatial and temporal resolution, combined with the greater geolocational and spectral accuracy of the MODIS instruments, compared with previous multi-temporal data sets, mean that these data may be used with greater confidence in species' distribution modelling

    The response of selected terrestrial organisms to the Martian environment: A modeling study

    An energy balance model has been developed to investigate how the Martian atmospheric environment could influence a community of photosynthetic microorganisms with properties similar to those of a cyanophyte (blue-green algal mat) and a lichen. Surface moisture and soil nutrients are assumed to be available. The model was developed to approximate equatorial equinox conditions and includes parameters for solar and thermal radiation, convective and conductive energy transport, and evaporative cooling. Calculations include the diurnal variation of organism temperature and transpiration and photosynthetic rates. The influences of different wind speeds and organism size and resistivity are also studied. The temperature of organisms in mats less than a few millimeters thick will not differ from the ground temperature by more than 10[deg]K. Water loss is actually retarded at higher wind speeds, since the organism temperature is lowered, thus reducing the saturation vapor pressure. Typical photosynthetic rates lead to the production of 10-6 to 10-7 mole O2 cm-2 day-1.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23720/1/0000692.pd
