    Financial sector policy in Thailand : a macroeconomic perspective

    The recent Thai boom has been accomplished in an economy with considerable openness to external forces. Despite the fiscal correction achieved during 1986-89, the domestic demand expansion has made itself felt in a widening of the current account deficit. While this deficit partly reflects the need for a surge of capital expenditure to avail of export prospects and to provide the necessary infrastructure, care will have to be taken to ensure that investment does not get too far out of line with the long-run savings potential of the economy. The ability of the Thai financial sector to provide the investible funds that are demanded by the boom is influenced by its ability to mobilize savings, by official policy regarding credit allocation and by the degree to which capital is free to flow internationally. Resource mobilization in Thailand is impressive : its liquidity ratio is surpassed by only a handful of developing countries.     Proton Decay at MplM_{pl} and the Scale of SUSY-Breaking

    It is sometimes argued that a virtue of pushing the supersymmetry breaking scale above 1 PeV is that no particular flavor structure is required in the soft sector in order to evade bounds on flavor-changing neutral currents. However, without flavor structure, suppressing generic Planck-suppressed contributions to proton decay requires even higher SUSY scales, of order 101110^{11} (10910^9) GeV for degenerate (mini-split) gauginos and scalars. With flavor structure, the question of whether proton decay or flavor symmetries are more constraining is model-dependent, but it straightforward to find simple models where both constraints are satisfied for much lower SUSY scales.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure. v2: expanded discussion of alignment models in sec. 3. accepted for publication in JHE

    Additional Siphonaptera Records From Small Mammals in the Central Upper Peninsula of Michigan

    Fleas were collected from mammals during the period 1990-1992 in two upper peninsula counties. Identified specimens were compared to existing distribution records for both parasite and host. Only those records which are newly documented for county, upper peninsula or Michigan are listed. We report one previously unknown flea species and five new host records for Michigan. One host record is new for the upper peninsula. In addition, seven new host/parasite combinations are recorded for two central upper peninsula counties

    End-user informed demographic projections for Hamilton up to 2041

    This report provides a set of projections of the population of Hamilton City and the larger Hamilton Zone. The projections have been calculated by means of the cohort component model. The projections can be considered alongside official Statistics New Zealand projections, but differ from the latter in terms of assumptions made about net migration. These assumptions constitute a number of scenarios that were informed by the Hamilton City Council and local consultations. These scenarios are linked to the potential impact of a number of economic development activities. The report also contains projections of the number of households, the labour force and two ethnic groups: Māori and New Zealand Europeans. In addition, a dwellings-based methodology is used to produce small area (Census Area Unit) projections. Across the scenarios, Hamilton City’s projected population growth over the next two decades ranges from 13.8 percent to 36.0 percent. This is between 1.5 to 12.2 percentage points higher than the corresponding projected national growth

    Understanding β-Hydride Eliminations from Heteroatom Functional Groups

    Using density functional theory, we investigated detailed aspects of the quintessential organometallic process, β-hydride elimination (BHE). In general, we find that most BHE processes from alkyl functional group β-atoms are facile, while BHE processes from heteroatom functional groups (N and O) are prohibitively high in energy. We present calculated molecular orbitals and atomic NBO charges obtained from snapshots along reaction profiles to present a qualitative overview for how heteroatoms adversely affect these processes. We discuss these results to provide an illustration for how these processes proceed, clarifying a sometimes oversimplified model for these reactions

    SiO overcoating and polishing of CFRP telescope panels

    Development of carbon fiber reinforces plastic (CFRP) panel overcoating and polishing is structured in two parts. The first part utilized a short series of experiments to determine the feasibility of overcoating and polishing CFRP panels, and the second part employes a systematic approach to optimize techniques learned. Questions which required answers in the initial investigation are summarized. Tests were performedin the Steward Observatory's 2.2 Meter Vacuum Coating Chamber and began with 3 cm square pieces of CFRP facesheet material. Next, a 10 cm square and one-inch-thick CFPR-Aluminum core panel was tested. Tests were then conducted on a 0.5-meter-square Dornier panel (QUAD 4) with CFRP facesheets on two-inch aluminum Flexcore. To complete the initial study, a previously characterized 0.5 m Dornier panel (QUAD 23) was coated and hand polished. The mirror's optical performance was not affected by the SiO coating
