Lexical Frequency Effects in Dual-Task Picture Naming

Lexical frequency effects were examined in the context of the central bottleneck (CB) model of dual-task performance. Two dual-task experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, picture naming was the primary task and tone identification was secondary. Lexical frequency affected reaction time (RT) to both tasks similarly. In Experiment 2, task order was reversed, and, after controlling for variables including name and image agreement, frequency affected naming RT similarly at all levels of stimulus onset asynchrony. These results are consistent with prior studies localizing frequency effects in word naming to the central, response selection stage of the CB model

The Roles of PPARs in the Fetal Origins of Metabolic Health and Disease

Beyond the short-term effects on fertility, there is increasing evidence that obesity or the consumption of an inappropriate diet by the mother during pregnancy adversely affects the long-term health of her offspring. PPAR and RXR isotypes are widely expressed in reproductive tissues and in the developing fetus. Through their interactions with fatty acids, they may mediate adaptive responses to the changes in the maternal diet. In the maturing follicle, PPAR-γ has an important role in the granulosa cells that surround the maturing oocyte. After fertilisation, PPAR-γ and PPAR-β/δ are essential regulators of placentation and the subsequent development of key metabolic tissues such as skeletal muscle and adipose cells. Activation of PPAR-γ and PPAR-β/δ during fetal development has the potential to modify the growth and development of these tissues. PPAR-α is expressed at low levels in the fetal liver, however, this expression may be important, as changes in the methylation of DNA in its promoter region are reported to take place during this period of development. This epigenetic modification then programmes subsequent expression. These findings suggest that two separate PPAR-dependent mechanisms may be involved in the fetal adaptations to the maternal diet, one, mediated by PPAR-γ and PPAR-β/δ, regulating cell growth and differentiation; and another adapting long-term lipid metabolism via epigenetic changes in PPAR-α to optimise postnatal survival

V1647 Ori (IRAS 05436-0007) in Outburst: the First Three Months

We report on photometric (BVRIJHK) and low dispersion spectroscopic observations of V1647 Ori, the star that drives McNeil's Nebula, between 10 February and 7 May 2004. The star is photometrically variable atop a general decline in brightness of about 0.3-0.4 magnitudes during these 87 days. The spectra are featureless, aside from H-alpha and the Ca II infrared triplet in emission, and a Na I D absorption feature. The Ca II triplet line ratios are typical of young stellar objects. The H-alpha equivalent width may be modulated on a period of about 60 days. The post-outburst extinction appears to be less than 7 mag. The data are suggestive of an FU Orionis-like event, but further monitoring will be needed to definitively characterize the outburst.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

The relationship between language processing and attention has been a topic of research in linguistics, psychology and speech-language pathology for a very long time. Following the hypothesis that attention (e.g., Kahneman, 1973) may be related to impaired language performance in aphasia (McNeil, 1982), researchers have increasingly investigated this hypothesis (McNeil, Odell, & Tseng, 1991; Murray, 1999; Robin & Rizzo, 1989; Tseng, McNeil, & Milenkovic, 1993)

Identifying barriers to healthcare as reported by rural and medically underserved patients in Oklahoma

OBJECTIVE: The Rural Patient Experience survey seeks to identify barriers to healthcare faced by patients in rural Oklahoma. Through the administration of a survey directly to patients, this study will analyze the current status of healthcare access, availability, and usage among rural Oklahoma populations. Results can be used to implement effective improvements in healthcare access tailored to specific patient-identified barriers.METHODS: Surveys will be distributed to individuals residing in rural communities and Health Professional Shortage Areas in the state of Oklahoma. The study involves patients of healthcare facilities in partnerships with Oklahoma State University's Center for Health System Innovation, and the facilities that agree to participate in the study will allow access to their patient panel. Patients residing in rural zip codes will be pooled into a randomly sampled population for survey distribution. Two-thirds (67%) of qualifying patients from each patient panel will be randomly selected to receive a survey in order to achieve a sample of adequate size.Responses will be analyzed using summary statistics, descriptive statistics, and significance testing.RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS: The development of the survey is being conducted and results are pending the distribution of the survey
