    Misreading the Hybrid Face: The Alienation of Performed and Authentic Self in Danzy Senna’s Caucasia and Chang-Rae Lee’s Native Speaker

    Race is epistemological. It shapes worldviews, conceptions of self, and interactions with society. It defines who belongs in the national community and who counts as fully human. The myth of whiteness as a homogenizing and nativist identity creates false personas around and within racialized others. These personas define non-white populations according to exclusionary stereotypes. These stereotypes, in turn, separate populations based on appearance and cultural practice. This thesis applies Critical Race Theory and comparative racialization tools to examine the historical implications of race on the conception of an authentic, or internally true, identity. These implications are illustrated by the dynamics of choice and racial identification for multi-racial and multi-cultural individuals in literature. By comparing African-American and Asian-American racialization in relation to the homogenizing white presence, this thesis explores the performance of race as social legibility in post-civil rights-era discourse

    The distribution patterns of Eastern red-cedar were studied in Henry County, Iowa, in a general survey and also in three intensive study areas in Marion, Jackson, and Wayne townships. It was found that the abundant seed sources of red-cedar and the predominantly rolling land in Henry County make extensive establishment of red-cedars possible. In the northern tier of townships red-cedars are restricted to fence lines and roadsides whereas in the hilly southern three tiers of townships they are much more abundant

    Nonlinear Wavepacket Dynamics in Proximity to a Stationary Inflection Point

    A stationary inflection point (SIP) in the Bloch dispersion relation of a periodic waveguide is an exceptional point degeneracy where three Bloch eigenmodes coalesce forming the so-called frozen mode with a divergent amplitude and vanishing group velocity of its propagating component. We have developed a theoretical framework to study the time evolution of wavepackets centered at an SIP. Analysis of the evolution of statistical moments distribution of linear pulses shows a strong deviation from the conventional ballistic wavepacket dynamics in dispersive media. The presence of nonlinear interactions dramatically changes the situation, resulting in a mostly ballistic propagation of nonlinear wavepackets with the speed and even the direction of propagation essentially dependent on the wavepacket amplitude. Such a behavior is unique to nonlinear wavepackets centered at an SIP.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Applications of a Hybrid Manufacturing Process for Fabrication and Repair of Metallic Structures

    Since its appearance, rapid prototyping technology has been of interest to various industries that are looking for a process to produce/build a part directly from a CAD model in a short time. Among them, the direct metal deposition process is the only process which directly manufactures a fully dense metal part without intermediate steps. However, challenges of the direct metal deposition process include building overhang structures, producing precision surfaces, and making parts with complex structures. Coupled between the additive and the subtractive processes into a single workstation, the integrated process, or hybrid process, can produce a metal part with machining accuracy and surface finish. Therefore, the hybrid process is potentially a very competitive process to fabricate and repair metallic structures. This paper summarizes the current development of the hybrid process to process high temperature metallic materials, including tool steel and Ti64. Research in simulation and modeling, process development, and actual part building and repair are discussed
