Two fault tolerant toggle-hook release

A coupling device is disclosed which is mechanically two fault tolerant for release. The device comprises a fastener plate and fastener body, each of which is attachable to a different one of a pair of structures to be joined. The fastener plate and body are coupled by an elongate toggle mounted at one end in a socket on the fastener plate for universal pivotal movement thereon. The other end of the toggle is received in an opening in the fastener body and adapted for limited pivotal movement therein. The toggle is adapted to be restrained by three latch hooks arranged in symmetrical equiangular spacing about the axis of the toggle, each hook being mounted on the fastener body for pivotal movement between an unlatching non-contact position with respect to the toggle and a latching position in engagement with a latching surface of the toggle. The device includes releasable lock means for locking each latch hook in its latching position whereby the toggle couples the fastener plate to the fastener body and means for releasing the lock means to unlock each said latch hook from the latch position whereby the unlocking of at least one of the latch hooks from its latching position results in the decoupling of the fastener plate from the fastener body

The Structure of Scholarly Communications within Academic Libraries

Academic libraries often define their administrative structure according to services they offer, including research services, acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, and so on. Scholarly Communications is something of a moving target, though. How are Scholarly Communications positions defined, what duties do they often include, and how do they fit within the library’s administrative structure? Some of the first positions devoted to Scholarly Communications required JD’s and focused on Author’s Rights, copyright and fair use. Yet other positions recently advertised group Scholarly Communications librarians within Digital Scholarship units, which not only create and maintain institutional repositories, they also publish electronic journals and offer services related to data curation. This presentation will quickly review the findings recently published in a SPEC Kit, findings which focus on ARL Libraries. The main portion of the presentation, though, will move beyond the SPEC Kit by concentrating on non-ARL Libraries, reviewing their relevant position descriptions and library organization charts, among other resources, to uncover common duties for Scholarly Communications librarian positions and the variety of administrative structures in which they work

Creating Cherokee Print: Samuel Austin Worcester’s Impact on the Syllabary

The 1821 creation of a written syllabary for the Cherokee language by Sequoyah and its use in the Nation’s newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, are routinely examined within the context of the tribe’s discourse surrounding removal in the 1830s, but scholars often overlook the influence of the missionary Samuel Austin Worcester and the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) in shaping the parameters of that discourse by arranging the syllabary, typesetting the characters, and establishing the press. This article illuminates these significant historical and technical aspects of Worcester’s influence on the creation of Cherokee print. Worcester’s influence on the Cherokee syllabary is important, given the enduring nature of his influence and the rapid adoption of the written language: within fourteen years of its introduction, and seven years of the first printing, more than half of all households in the Cherokee Nation had a reader of Cherokee. Today, nearly 180 years after Worcester first standardized Cherokee characters in print, his forms of the syllabic characters guide instruction in reading and writing Cherokee, and his translation of the Bible into Cherokee persists in Cherokee homes
