Correlation Between Electron Capture Negative Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometric Fragmentation and Calculated Internal Energies for Polychlorinated Biphenyls
Correlations between molecular structure and fragmentation observed in electron capture negative chemical ionization mass spectra (moderator gas = methane) of 49 selected tetrachlorinated, pentachlorinated, and hexachlorinated biphenyls have been investigated by using molecular modeling. The semiempirical general molecular orbital program MOPAC was used to calculate molecular properties for biphenyl and the 209 polychlorinated biphenyls. The mass spectrometric ionization and fragmentation processes were found to be linked to the number of chlorine atoms present on the biphenyl, and to the number of those chlorine atoms in the ortho (2, 2\u27, 6, and 6\u27) positions. The intensity of molecular ions increased with the number of chlorine atoms present, but this was counteracted by enhanced fragmentation as the number of ortho position chlorine atoms increased. The molecular parameters that were most closely linked with the number of ortho chlorine atoms were the twist angle between the phenyl rings and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). It is suggested that fragmentation occurs when the energy of the ionizing electron exceeds the energy difference between the LUMO and LUMO + 1 orbitals
On the desire to make a difference
True benevolence is, most fundamentally, a desire that the world be better. It is natural and common, however, to frame thinking about benevolence indirectly, in terms of a desire to make a difference to how good the world is. This would be an innocuous shift if desires to make a difference were extensionally equivalent to desires that the world be better. This paper shows that at least on some common ways of making a “desire to make a difference” precise, this extensional equivalence fails. Where it fails, “difference-making preferences” run counter to the ideals of benevolence. In particular, in the context of decision making under uncertainty, coupling a “difference-making” framing in a natural way with risk aversion leads to preferences that violate stochastic dominance, and that lead to a strong form of collective defeat, from the point of view of betterness. Difference-making framings and true benevolence are not strictly mutually inconsistent, but agents seeking to implement true benevolence must take care to avoid the various pitfalls that we outline

New sub-millimeter limits on dust in the 55 Cancri planetary system
We present new, high-sensitivity sub-millimeter observations towards 55
Cancri, a nearby G8 star with one, or possibly two, known planetary
companion(s). Our 850 m map, obtained with the SCUBA instrument on the
James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, shows three peaks of emission at the 2.5 mJy
level in the vicinity of the star's position. However, the observed peaks are
25\arcsec--40\arcsec away from the star and a deep -band optical image
reveals faint point sources that coincide with two of the sub-millimeter peaks.
Thus, we do not find evidence for dust emission spatially associated with 55
Cancri. The excess 60 m emission detected with ISO may originate from one
or more of the 850 m peaks that we attribute to background sources. Our
new results, together with the HST/NICMOS coronographic images in the
near-infrared, place stringent limits on the amount of dust in this planetary
system, and argue against the existence of a detectable circumstellar dust disk

Dust in the 55 Cancri planetary system
The presence of debris disks around 1-Gyr-old main sequence stars
suggests that an appreciable amount of dust may persist even in mature
planetary systems. Here we report the detection of dust emission from 55
Cancri, a star with one, or possibly two, planetary companions detected through
radial velocity measurements. Our observations at 850m and 450m imply
a dust mass of 0.0008-0.005 Earth masses, somewhat higher than that in the the
Kuiper Belt of our solar system. The estimated temperature of the dust grains
and a simple model fit both indicate a central disk hole of at least 10 AU in
radius. Thus, the region where the planets are detected is likely to be
significantly depleted of dust. Our results suggest that far-infrared and
sub-millimeter observations are powerful tools for probing the outer regions of
