    Generation and detection of NOON states in superconducting circuits

    NOON states, states between two modes of light of the form ∣N,0⟩+eiÏ•âˆŁ0,N⟩|N,0\rangle+e^{i\phi}|0,N\rangle allow for super-resolution interformetry. We show how NOON states can be efficiently produced in circuit quntum electrodynamics using superconducting phase qubits and resonators. We propose a protocol where only one interaction between the two modes is required, creating all the necessary entanglement at the start of the procedure. This protocol makes active use of the first three states of the phase qubits. Additionally, we show how to efficiently verify the success of such an experiment, even for large NOON states, using randomly sampled measurements and semidefinite programming techniques.Comment: 15 pages and 3 figure

    Magnetoresistance of n-GaAs at filamentary current flow

    A large number of sharp structures are observed in the 4.2 K magnetoresistance of n-GaAs biased above impurity breakdown in a regime where current flow is filamentary. Most of the structures cannot be attributed to spectral properties of the semiconductor such as impact excitation of shallow donors or the magnetoimpurity effect. Experimental results give evidence that these structures are caused by a redistribution of the filamentary current flow when one filament border is swept across an imperfection in the material

    Unitarity constraint for threshold coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron and chiral perturbation theory

    The contribution of the two-step process gamma + d -> p + n -> pi0 + d to the imaginary part of the amplitude for coherent pion production on the deuteron is calculated exploiting unitarity constraints. The result shows that this absorptive process is not negligible and has to be considered in an extraction of the elementary neutron production amplitude from the gamma + d -> pi0 + d cross section at threshold. In addition, it is argued that a consistent calculation of gamma + d -> pi0 + d in baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond next-to-leading order requires the inclusion of this absorptive process.Comment: 11 pages revtex including 2 postscript figure

    Genetically modified grains have rapidly become popular among producers across U.S. Some consumers, particularly in the EU, South Korea, and Japan, are unwilling to purchase products containing ingredients from genetically modified or transgenic crops. This paper develops a model to represent costs of segregating non-transgenic grains at country elevators and simulates these costs at representative elevators in South Dakota under alternative scenarios employing a case study approach.     A management study was conducted to specify activities and problems encountered during the development of procedures for documentation and crew training on experiments, as well as during the design, integration, and delivery of a life sciences experiment payload to Johnson Space Center for a 7 day simulation of a Spacelab mission. Conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future Ames' life sciences projects are included. Broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the environment of space are also addressed

    Segregating Transgenic Grains:Results of a Survey Among Country Elevators in South Dakota

    Using responses from a mail survey conducted among 203 South Dakota grain elevator managers in 2002, we analyzed the degree to which their elevators were prepared to segregate non-transgenic from commodity grains. Results showed four percent of the managers expected their own, and ten percent expected a competing elevator be dedicated to handling only non-transgenic or identity preserved grains within five years. Only four and one percent of the elevators handled non-transgenic corn and soybeans, respectively, and only one percent participated in identity preserved grains. One in five elevator managers in the state reported having tested corn for transgenic material, and none of the respondents conducted any genetic testing for soybeans in 2001. Further, 17 and two percent reported having buyers inquire about segregated non-transgenic or identity preserved corn, and such soybeans, respectively. Among those handling corn (soybeans), 29 (30) percent was familiar with the non-transgenic corn (soybean) market and 53 (58) percent was willing to participate in these markets at an average premium of 28 (37) cents per bushel. One in five elevators are able to participate in segregating non-transgenic and commodity grains without additional capital outlays.     Planning and managing future space facility projects

    To learn how ground-based personnel of a space project plan and organize their work and how such planning and organizing relate to work outcomes, longitudinal study of the management and execution of the Space Lab Mission Development Test 3 (SMD 3) was performed at NASA Ames Research Center. A view of the problems likely to arise in organizations and some methods of coping with these problems are presented as well as the conclusions and recommendations that pertain strictly to SMD 3 management. Emphasis is placed on the broader context of future space facility projects and additional problems that may be anticipated. A model of management that may be used to facilitate problem solving and communication - management by objectives (MBO) is presented. Some problems of communication and emotion management that MBO does not address directly are considered. Models for promoting mature, constructive and satisfying emotional relationships among group members are discussed
