    Development of an advanced pitch active control system for a wide body jet aircraft

    An advanced PACS control law was developed for a commercial wide-body transport (Lockheed L-1011) by using modern control theory. Validity of the control law was demonstrated by piloted flight simulation tests on the NASA Langley visual motion simulator. The PACS design objective was to develop a PACS that would provide good flying qualities to negative 10 percent static stability margins that were equivalent to those of the baseline aircraft at a 15 percent static stability margin which is normal for the L-1011. Also, the PACS was to compensate for high-Mach/high-g instabilities that degrade flying qualities during upset recoveries and maneuvers. The piloted flight simulation tests showed that the PACS met the design objectives. The simulation demonstrated good flying qualities to negative 20 percent static stability margins for hold, cruise and high-speed flight conditions. Analysis and wind tunnel tests performed on other Lockheed programs indicate that the PACS could be used on an advanced transport configuration to provide a 4 percent fuel savings which results from reduced trim drag by flying at negative static stability margins

    Investigations in Patterns in Last Digits of Square Numbers and Higher Powers

    It is interesting to see what patterns exist in the final digits of powers of integers; the goal of this work is to introduce some new problems and results, which are ideally suited for interested readers to pursue further. We start our investigation with squares and say a square is a k-square good number if its last k digits base 10 are the same non-zero number, and the last k + 1 digits are not identical. We completely analyze k-square good numbers; when k = 1 we can have final digits of 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9 (with the second to last digit different), when k = 2 we can end with 44 but not 444, when k = 3 we can end with 444 but not 4444, and there are no 4-square good numbers. We then generalize these arguments to look at k-cube and k-fourth good numbers, completely analyzing these cases. Noting that any even power 2m is the same as squaring an mth power, we can extend our results to even powers more easily than to odd, as the behavior has to be a subset of what we have seen for squares. There are complications arising from powers of 2 dividing our numbers, but using results from elementary number theory (in particular concerning the totient function and Euler’s theorem), we reduce the problem for even powers to a tractable finite computation, and completely resolve this case, and then end with a list of accessible next problems

    Amorphous metallizations for high-temperature semiconductor device applications

    The initial results of work on a class of semiconductor metallizations which appear to hold promise as primary metallizations and diffusion barriers for high temperature device applications are presented. These metallizations consist of sputter-deposited films of high T sub g amorphous-metal alloys which (primarily because of the absence of grain boundaries) exhibit exceptionally good corrosion-resistance and low diffusion coefficients. Amorphous films of the alloys Ni-Nb, Ni-Mo, W-Si, and Mo-Si were deposited on Si, GaAs, GaP, and various insulating substrates. The films adhere extremely well to the substrates and remain amorphous during thermal cycling to at least 500 C. Rutherford backscattering and Auger electron spectroscopy measurements indicate atomic diffussivities in the 10 to the -19th power sq cm/S range at 450 C

    Reconsidering the Battered Woman Syndrome Defense for Women Who Kill

    This paper considers two possible alterations to the current use of Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) as a defense for the criminal act of murder. First, I will argue that BWS is best used as an excuse defense for murder. In the United States, BWS has historically been used as a justification defense for victims of long-term domestic violence who kill their abusers. A justification defense attempts to show that the criminal defendant’s action was warranted and justified while an excuse defense is meant to show that the criminal defendant is not fully responsible for her actions due to some mental disease or defect. I believe that BWS should be used as an excuse defense for murder because there is a significant amount of research linking BWS to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and PTSD is currently accepted as an excuse defense for criminal action. Second, I will argue that one way to formulate BWS as an excuse defense is to name BWS in the DSM-VI as a sub-category of PTSD. I will also argue that the neural correlates of BWS are discoverable and the presentation of neural evidence will support BWS as a genuine psychological condition and excuse defense
