    The Giant Flare of December 27, 2004 from SGR 1806-20

    The giant flare of December 27, 2004 from SGR 1806-20 represents one of the most extraordinary events captured in over three decades of monitoring the gamma-ray sky. One measure of the intensity of the main peak is its effect on X- and gamma-ray instruments. RHESSI, an instrument designed to study the brightest solar flares, was completely saturated for ~0.5 s following the start of the main peak. A fortuitous alignment of SGR 1806-20 near the Sun at the time of the giant flare, however, allowed RHESSI a unique view of the giant flare event, including the precursor, the main peak decay, and the pulsed tail. Since RHESSI was saturated during the main peak, we augment these observations with Wind and RHESSI particle detector data in order to reconstruct the main peak as well. Here we present detailed spectral analysis and evolution of the giant flare. We report the novel detection of a relatively soft fast peak just milliseconds before the main peak, whose timescale and sizescale indicate a magnetospheric origin. We present the novel detection of emission extending up to 17 MeV immediately following the main peak, perhaps revealing a highly-extended corona driven by the hyper-Eddington luminosities. The spectral evolution and pulse evolution during the tail are presented, demonstrating significant magnetospheric twist and evolution during this phase. Blackbody radii are derived for every stage of the flare, which show remarkable agreement despite the range of luminosities and temperatures covered.     We study pi0pi0 correlations in the exclusive reaction ppbar -> 4pi0 at rest with complete reconstruction of the kinematics for each event. The inclusive distribution shows a dip at small invariant mass of the pion pair while a small enhancement in the double differential distribution is observed for small invariant masses of both pion pairs. Dynamical models with resonances in the final state are shown to be consistent with the data while the stochastic HBT mechanism is not supported by the present findings.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure

    Nonsolar astronomy with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI)

    The Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) is a NASA Small Explorer satellite designed to study hard x-ray and gamma-ray emission from solar flares. In addition, its high-resolution array of germanium detectors can see photons from high-energy sources throughout the Universe. Here we discuss the various algorithms necessary to extract spectra, lightcurves, and other information about cosmic gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, and other astrophysical phenomena using an unpointed, spinning array of detectors. We show some preliminary results and discuss our plans for future analyses. All RHESSI data are public, and scientists interested in participating should contact the principal author

    J-integral analysis: An EDXD and DIC comparative study for a fatigue crack

    Synchrotron Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffraction (EDXD) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) have been applied to map simultaneously the 2D elastic strain and displacement fields of a propagating fatigue crack in the HAZ of a welded Cr2Ni4MoV bainitic steel. The position of the crack tip was tracked via a phase congruency analysis of the displacement field, and also by detection of its cyclic plastic zone. Both types of full field data provided independent inputs to finite element/J-integral analyses that directly quantified the elastic cyclic stress intensity factor range applied to the crack. No knowledge was required of the specimen geometry, crack length or applied loads. The agreement between the two analyses in this controlled study shows that strain mapping by synchrotron EDXD can provide a reliable method to study the crack fields in more complex problems, such as interactions between crack closure, residual stresses and applied loading

    What is work engagement? A text mining approach using employees' self-narratives

    We introduce text mining to study work engagement by using this method to classify employees' survey-based self-narratives into high or low work engagement and analyzing the text features that contribute to the classification. We used two samples, representing the 2020 and 2021 waves of an annual survey among healthcare employees. In the first study, we used exploratory sample 1 (N = 5591) to explore which text features explain work engagement (unigrams, bigrams, psychological, or linguistic). In the second study, we confirmed whether features persisted over time between exploratory sample 1 and confirmatory sample 2 (N = 4470). We find that psychological features classify employees across two samples with 60% accuracy. These features partly validate the literature: High-engaged employees refer more to affiliation and positive emotions, and low-engaged employees refer more to negative emotions and power. We extend the literature by studying linguistics: High-engaged employees use more first-person plural (“we”) than low-engaged employees. Finally, some results question the literature, like the finding that low-engaged employees refer more to their managers. This study shows text mining can contribute by confirming, extending, or questioning the literature on work engagement and explores how future research could build on our findings with survey-based or in vivo applications.</p
