Listen carefully: transgender voices in the workplace
We find that only 17% of FTSE 100 company websites refer directly to transgender (‘trans’) individuals, illustrating the extent to which trans voices are unheard in the workplace. We propose that these voices are missing for a number of reasons: voluntary silence to protect oneself from adverse circumstances; the subsumption of trans voices within the larger ‘LGBT’ community; assimilation, wherein many trans voices become affiliated with those of their post-transition gender; multiple trans voices arising from diversity within the transgender community; and limited access to voice mechanisms for transgender employees. We identify the negative implications of being unheard for individual trans employees, for organizational outcomes, and for business and management scholarship, and propose ways in which organizations can listen more carefully to trans voices. Finally, we introduce an agenda for future research that tests the applicability of the theoretical framework of invisible stigma disclosure to transgender individuals, and calls for new theoretical and empirical developments to identify HRM challenges and best practices for respecting trans employees and their choices to remain silent or be heard
Estimation and optimal designing under latent variable models for paired comparisons studies via a multiplicative algorithm

1. The problem of estimating the parameters of latent variable models such as the Bradley Terry or Thurstone Model by the method of maximum likelihood, given data from a paired comparisons experiment. The parameters of these models can be taken to be weights which are positive and sum to one;<BR/>
2. The problem of determining approximate locally optimal designs for good estimation of these parameters; i.e of determining optimal design weights which are also positive and sum to one
Thin Animals
Lattice animals provide a discretized model for the theta transition
displayed by branched polymers in solvent. Exact graph enumeration studies have
given some indications that the phase diagram of such lattice animals may
contain two collapsed phases as well as an extended phase. This has not been
confirmed by studies using other means. We use the exact correspondence between
the q --> 1 limit of an extended Potts model and lattice animals to investigate
the phase diagram of lattice animals on phi-cubed random graphs of arbitrary
topology (``thin'' random graphs). We find that only a two phase structure
exists -- there is no sign of a second collapsed phase.
The random graph model is solved in the thermodynamic limit by saddle point
methods. We observe that the ratio of these saddle point equations give
precisely the fixed points of the recursion relations that appear in the
solution of the model on the Bethe lattice by Henkel and Seno. This explains
the equality of non-universal quantities such as the critical lines for the

A Search for Binary Active Galactic Nuclei: Double-Peaked [OIII] AGN in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) having double-peaked
profiles of [OIII] 5007,4959 and other narrow emission-lines, motivated by the
prospect of finding candidate binary AGN. These objects were identified by
means of a visual examination of 21,592 quasars at z < 0.7 in SDSS Data Release
7 (DR7). Of the spectra with adequate signal-to-noise, 148 spectra exhibit a
double-peaked [OIII] profile. Of these, 86 are Type 1 AGN and 62 are Type 2
AGN. Only two give the appearance of possibly being optically resolved double
AGN in the SDSS images, but many show close companions or signs of recent
interaction. Radio-detected quasars are three times more likely to exhibit a
double-peaked [OIII] profile than quasars with no detected radio flux,
suggesting a role for jet interactions in producing the double-peaked profiles.
Of the 66 broad line (Type 1) AGN that are undetected in the FIRST survey, 0.9%
show double peaked [OIII] profiles. We discuss statistical tests of the nature
of the double-peaked objects. Further study is needed to determine which of
them are binary AGN rather than disturbed narrow line regions, and how many
additional binaries may remain undetected because of insufficient line-of-sight
velocity splitting. Previous studies indicate that 0.1% of SDSS quasars are
spatially resolved binaries, with typical spacings of ~10 to 100 kpc. If a
substantial fraction of the double-peaked objects are indeed binaries, then our
results imply that binaries occur more frequently at smaller separations (< 10
kpc). This suggests that simultaneous fueling of both black holes is more

OVI Asymmetry and an Accelerated Outflow in an Obscured Seyfert: FUSE and HST STIS Spectroscopy of Markarian533
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert2 galaxy Mrk533 obtained
with FUSE. These spectra show narrow asymmetrical OVI 1032,1038 emission lines
with stronger wings shortward of the peak wavelength, but the degree of
asymmetry of these wings in velocity is much lower than that of the wings of
the lines of lower ionization. In the combined OVI profile there are marginal
indications of local absorptions in the outflow. The CIII 977 line is seen
weakly with a similar profile, but with very low signal to noise. These FUV
spectra are among the first for a Seyfert of type2, i.e., a purportedly
obscured Seyfert. The HST STIS spectral image of Mrk533 allows delineation of
the various components of the outflow, and we infer that the outflow is
accelerated. We discuss the results in terms of nuclear geometry and

A Potts/Ising Correspondence on Thin Graphs
We note that it is possible to construct a bond vertex model that displays
q-state Potts criticality on an ensemble of phi3 random graphs of arbitrary
topology, which we denote as ``thin'' random graphs in contrast to the fat
graphs of the planar diagram expansion.
Since the four vertex model in question also serves to describe the critical
behaviour of the Ising model in field, the formulation reveals an isomorphism
between the Potts and Ising models on thin random graphs. On planar graphs a
similar correspondence is present only for q=1, the value associated with

Partially Randomized, Non-Blinded Trial of DNA and MVA Therapeutic Vaccines Based on Hepatitis B Virus Surface Protein for Chronic HBV Infection
BACKGROUND: Chronic HBV infects 350 million people causing cancer and liver failure. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of plasmid DNA (pSG2.HBs) vaccine, followed by recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA.HBs), encoding the surface antigen of HBV as therapy for chronic HBV. A secondary goal was to characterize the immune responses. METHODS: Firstly 32 HBV e antigen negative (eAg(-)) participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: to receive vaccines alone, lamivudine (3TC) alone, both, or neither. Later 16 eAg(+) volunteers in two groups received either 3TC alone or both 3TC and vaccines. Finally, 12 eAg(-) and 12 eAg(+) subjects were enrolled into higher-dose treatment groups. Healthy but chronically HBV-infected males between the ages of 15-25 who lived in the western part of The Gambia were eligible. Participants in some groups received 1 mg or 2 mg of pSG2.HBs intramuscularly twice followed by 5×10(7) pfu or 1.5×10(8) pfu of MVA.HBs intradermally at 3-weekly intervals with or without concomitant 3TC for 11-14 weeks. Intradermal rabies vaccine was administered to a negative control group. Safety was assessed clinically and biochemically. The primary measure of efficacy was a quantitative PCR assay of plasma HBV. Immunity was assessed by IFN-γ ELISpot and intracellular cytokine staining. RESULTS: Mild local and systemic adverse events were observed following the vaccines. A small shiny scar was observed in some cases after MVA.HBs. There were no significant changes in AST or ALT. HBeAg was lost in one participant in the higher-dose group. As expected, the 3TC therapy reduced viraemia levels during therapy, but the prime-boost vaccine regimen did not reduce the viraemia. The immune responses were variable. The majority of IFN-γ was made by antigen non-specific CD16(+) cells (both CD3(+) and CD3(-)). CONCLUSIONS: The vaccines were well tolerated but did not control HBV infection. Probing the Ionizing Continuum of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies. I.Observational Results
We present optical spectra and emission-line ratios of 12 Narrow-Line Seyfert
1 (NLS1) galaxies that we observed to study the ionizing EUV continuum. A
common feature in the EUV continuum of active galactic nuclei is the big blue
bump (BBB), generally associated with thermal accretion disk emission. While
Galactic absorption prevents direct access to the EUV range, it can be mapped
by measuring the strength of a variety of forbidden optical emission lines that
respond to different EUV continuum regions. We find that narrow emission-line
ratios involving [OII]3727, Hbeta, [OIII]5007, [OI]6300, Halpha,[NII]6583, and
[SII]6716,6731 indicate no significant difference between NLS1s and Broad-Line
Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies, which suggests that the spectral energy
distributions of their ionizing EUV - soft X-ray continua are similar. The
relative strength of important forbidden high ionization lines like [NeV]3426
compared to HeII4686 and the relative strength of [FeX]6374 appear to show the
same range as in BLS1 galaxies. However, a trend of weaker
F([OI]6300)/F(Halpha) emission-line ratios is indicated for NLS1s compared to
BLS1s. To recover the broad emission-line profiles we used Gaussian components.
This approach indicates that the broad Hbeta profile can be well described with
a broad component (FWHM = 3275 +- 800 km/s) and an intermediate broad component
(FWHM = 1200 +- 300 km/s). The width of the broad component is in the typical
range of normal BLS1s. The emission-line flux that is associated with the broad
component in these NLS1s amounts to at least 60% of the total flux. Thus it
dominates the total line flux, similar to BLS1 galaxies.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures. accepted for publication in the

Synovial fluid myeloid dendritic cells display important differences compared to monocyte-derived dendritic cells prepared in vitro
The object of this study was to characterise synovial fluid dendritic cells (SFDCs) with regard to morphology, phenotype and responses to 1,25hydroxy-cholecalciferol (1,25D) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and to compare these characteristics with those of peripheral blood (PB) monocyte-derived DCs (MDDCs). SF was aspirated from knees with inflammatory effusions. PB samples were obtained contemporaneously. SFDCs were separated by flow cytometry. Morphology was determined on cytosmears. Expression of accessory molecules, cytokines and prostaglandin synthases mRNA was quantified by reverse transcription PCR. Analyses were performed on freshly prepared DCs and after incubation with 1,25D and LPS, separately and in combination. SFDCs and MDDCs displayed broadly similar morphology. Expression of accessory molecules, cytokines, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E-synthase (PGES) was similar. SFDCs, but not MDDCs, expressed prostaglandin D-synthase (PGDS). PGDS was lost on incubation with SFDCs, but was induced by 1,25D in MDDCs. LPS in the presence or absence of 1,25D, induced interleukin 23 (IL23), IL1β and tumour necrosis factor-α in SFDCs and MDDCs, with SFDC showing stronger expression of these cytokines. 1,25D in combination with LPS induced PGES and enhanced LPS induction of IL6 in SFDCs and MDDCs. LPS reduced 1,25D-induced expression of PGDS in MDDCs. SFDCs and MDDCs display similar basal characteristics but differ in PGDS expression and responsiveness to LPS and 1,25D.
