    Pinned Low Energy Electronic Excitation in Metal Exchanged Vanadium Oxide Nanoscrolls

    We measured the optical properties of mixed valent vanadium oxide nanoscrolls and their metal exchanged derivatives in order to investigate the charge dynamics in these compounds. In contrast to the prediction of a metallic state for the metal exchanged derivatives within a rigid band model, we find that the injected charges in Mn2+^{2+} exchanged vanadium oxide nanoscrolls are pinned. A low-energy electronic excitation associated with the pinned carriers appears in the far infrared and persists at low temperature, suggesting that the nanoscrolls are weak metals in their bulk form, dominated by inhomogeneous charge disproportionation and Madelung energy effects.Comment: 4 figure

    Capturing the carer's experience: a researcher's reflections.

    Aim To reflect on the methodological challenges of conducting a study exploring the effects on quality of life of being an informal carer for a person with palliative heart failure, as well as the factors that influence a carer's perception of caring. Background There are multi-faceted influences on the positive and negative effects of being a carer for a patient with palliative heart failure. By conducting a mixed methods study the aim was to examine and explore similarities and differences of the phenomenon of being a carer. Data sources Quantitative data obtained from the Family Quality of Life Questionnaire (FAMQOL), and qualitative data obtained from 14 interviews with informal carers of patients living with palliative heart failure. Review methods The study was conducted as part of a PhD, University of Sheffield, and the supervisory team reviewed the research process throughout the study. Discussion The study had a two-phase sequential mixed methods design. A sample of carers was recruited from heart failure nurse service caseloads in a UK urban setting. Carers were invited to complete the Family Quality of Life Questionnaire, a tool developed for carers of patients with heart failure. Participants were also asked to provide contact details if they were willing to be interviewed for the second phase of the study. Conclusion The study highlights important methodological considerations for recruiting carers. As the intention was to begin the analysis of the questionnaires before beginning the second phase of the study, the researcher was compelled to consider how integration was maintained and how to improve access to carers for research. Implications for practice The complexities associated with the population in this study led the researcher to use a pragmatic design to address research questions. When reflecting on the research and the challenges associated with recruiting to the quantitative phase of the study, the researcher used an iterative approach to meet the unfolding complexities. Such an approach could prove beneficial for mixed methods studies that aim to engage with hard to reach populations

    Gluon and gluino penguin diagrams and the charmless decays of the b quark

    Gluon mediated exclusive hadronic decays of b quarks are studied within the standard model (SM) and the constrained minimally supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). For all allowed regions of the MSSM parameter space (A, tan beta, m_0, m_{1/2}) the penguin magnetic dipole form factor F^R_2 is dominant over the electric dipole and can be larger than the magnetic dipole form factor of the SM. However, overall the SM electric dipole decay amplitude F^L_1 dominates the decay rate. The MSSM penguin contributions to the free quark decay rate approach the 10% level for those regions of parameter space close to the highest allowed values of tan beta (~55) for which the gluino is light (m_{\tilde{g}} \approx 360 GeV) and lies within the range of the six d-squark masses. In these regions the supersymmetric box amplitudes are negligible. The MSSM phases change very little over the allowed parameter space and can lead to significant interference with the SM amplitudes

    Ultracold collisions in tight harmonic traps: Quantum defect model and application to metastable helium atoms

    We analyze a system of two colliding ultracold atoms under strong harmonic confinement from the viewpoint of quantum defect theory and formulate a generalized self-consistent method for determining the allowed energies. We also present two highly efficient computational methods for determining the bound state energies and eigenfunctions of such systems. The perturbed harmonic oscillator problem is characterized by a long asymptotic region beyond the effective range of the interatomic potential. The first method, which is based on quantum defect theory and is an adaptation of a technique developed by one of the authors (GP) for highly excited states in a modified Coulomb potential, is very efficient for integrating through this outer region. The second method is a direct numerical solution of the radial Schr\"{o}dinger equation using a discrete variable representation of the kinetic energy operator and a scaled radial coordinate grid. The methods are applied to the case of trapped spin-polarized metastable helium atoms.     Symmetry improvement of 3PI effective actions for O(N) scalar field theory

    [Abridged] n-Particle Irreducible Effective Actions (nnPIEA) are a powerful tool for extracting non-perturbative and non-equilibrium physics from quantum field theories. Unfortunately, practical truncations of nnPIEA can unphysically violate symmetries. Pilaftsis and Teresi (PT) addressed this by introducing a "symmetry improvement" scheme in the context of the 2PIEA for an O(2) scalar theory, ensuring that the Goldstone boson is massless in the broken symmetry phase [A. Pilaftsis and D. Teresi, Nuc.Phys. B 874, 2 (2013), pp. 594--619]. We extend this by introducing a symmetry improved 3PIEA for O(N) theories, for which the basic variables are the 1-, 2- and 3-point correlation functions. This requires the imposition of a Ward identity involving the 3-point function. The method leads to an infinity of physically distinct schemes, though an analogue of d'Alembert's principle is used to single out a unique scheme. The standard equivalence hierarchy of nnPIEA no longer holds with symmetry improvement and we investigate the difference between the symmetry improved 3PIEA and 2PIEA. We present renormalized equations of motion and counter-terms for 2 and 3 loop truncations of the effective action, leaving their numerical solution to future work. We solve the Hartree-Fock approximation and find that our method achieves a middle ground between the unimproved 2PIEA and PT methods. The phase transition predicted by our method is weakly first order and the Goldstone theorem is satisfied. We also show that, in contrast to PT, the symmetry improved 3PIEA at 2 loops does not predict the correct Higgs decay rate, but does at 3 loops. These results suggest that symmetry improvement should not be applied to nnPIEA truncated to <n<n loops. We also show that symmetry improvement is compatible with the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem, a check on the consistency of the formalism.Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, 2 supplemental Mathematica notebooks.     The layered perovskite HLaTiO4 reacts stoichiometrically with LiOH·H2O at room temperature to give targeted compositions in the series HxLi1-xLaTiO4. Remarkably, the Li+ and H+ ions are quantitatively exchanged in the solid state and this allows stoichiometric control of ion exchange for the first time in this important series of compounds

    Myocardial injury following ischemia and reperfusion is increased in the aging heart, including in the aging 24 mo Fischer 344 rat (mean survival 29 mo) compared to the Fischer 344 adult (6 mo). Adenosine (ADO) has been increasingly appreciated as a cardioprotective agent in myocardial ischemia. We hypothesized that a potential mechanism of the increased injury in the aging heart is decreased production of ADO in response to ischemia. Isolated buffer perfused (glucose 5 mM — insulin 5 μ/1) hearts from aging and adult Fischer 344 rats were subjected to stop-flow ischemia for either 2, 5, 10, 15 or 25 min after a 15 min equilibration phase. ADO and hypoxanthine (HX) were measured by HPLC. HX was decreased at 5 min, consistent with decreased ADO production at that time. The change in total adenylate pool was similar in both groups. The decrease in tissue glycogen and increase in lactate were similar during ischemia in both groups, suggesting comparable glycolytic activity. ATP levels were decreased in aging hearts at 5 min (11.1±2.3 vs 18.7±1.9 nmol/mg protein), but reached levels similar to adult hearts as ischemia progressed.Thus, decreased ADO levels during early ischemia may reflect reduced production of ADO in the aging heart, and increase the susceptibility of the aging heart to damage during ischemia and reperfusion

    Laser Intensity Dependence of Photoassociation in Ultracold Metastable Helium

    Photoassociation of spin-polarized metastable helium to the three lowest rovibrational levels of the J=1, 0u+0_u^+ state asymptoting to 2s3s {}^{3}S1+2p3_{1}+2p {}^{3}P0_{0} is studied using a second-order perturbative treatment of the line shifts valid for low laser intensities, and two variants of a non-perturbative close-coupled treatment, one based upon dressed states of the matter plus laser system, and the other on a modified radiative coupling which vanishes asymptotically, thus simulating experimental conditions. These non-perturbative treatments are valid for arbitrary laser intensities and yield the complete photoassociation resonance profile. Both variants give nearly identical results for the line shifts and widths of the resonances and show that their dependence upon laser intensity is very close to linear and quadratic respectively for the two lowest levels. The resonance profiles are superimposed upon a significant background loss, a feature for this metastable helium system not present in studies of photoassociation in other systems, which is due to the very shallow nature of the excited state 0u+0_u^+ potential. The results for the line shifts from the close-coupled and perturbative calculations agree very closely at low laser intensities.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, title altered, text reduce

    Purely-long-range bound states of He(2s3S)+(2s ^3S)+He(2p3P)(2p ^3P)

    We predict the presence and positions of purely-long-range bound states of 4^4He(2s3S)+4(2s ^3S)+{}^4He(2p3P)(2p ^3P) near the 2s3S1+2p3P0,12s ^3S_1+2p ^3P_{0,1} atomic limits. The results of the full multichannel and approximate models are compared, and we assess the sensitivity of the bound states to atomic parameters characterizing the potentials. Photoassociation to these purely-long-range molecular bound states may improve the knowledge of the scattering length associated with the collisions of two ultracold spin-polarized 4^4He(2s3S)(2s ^3S) atoms, which is important for studies of Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
