    Separating weak lensing and intrinsic alignments using radio observations

    We discuss methods for performing weak lensing using radio observations to recover information about the intrinsic structural properties of the source galaxies. Radio surveys provide unique information that can benefit weak lensing studies, such as HI emission, which may be used to construct galaxy velocity maps, and polarized synchrotron radiation; both of which provide information about the unlensed galaxy and can be used to reduce galaxy shape noise and the contribution of intrinsic alignments. Using a proxy for the intrinsic position angle of an observed galaxy, we develop techniques for cleanly separating weak gravitational lensing signals from intrinsic alignment contamination in forthcoming radio surveys. Random errors on the intrinsic orientation estimates introduce biases into the shear and intrinsic alignment estimates. However, we show that these biases can be corrected for if the error distribution is accurately known. We demonstrate our methods using simulations, where we reconstruct the shear and intrinsic alignment auto and cross-power spectra in three overlapping redshift bins. We find that the intrinsic position angle information can be used to successfully reconstruct both the lensing and intrinsic alignment power spectra with negligible residual bias.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Radio-Optical Galaxy Shape and Shear Correlations in the COSMOS Field using 3 GHz VLA Observations

    We present a weak lensing analysis of the 3 GHz VLA radio survey of the COSMOS field, which we correlate with overlapping HST-ACS optical observations using both intrinsic galaxy shape and cosmic shear correlation statistics. After cross-matching sources between the two catalogues, we measure the correlations of galaxy position angles and find a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.14±0.030.14 \pm 0.03. This is a marked improvement from previous studies which found very weak, or non-existent correlations, and gives insight into the emission processes of radio and optical galaxies. We also extract power spectra of averaged galaxy ellipticities (the primary observable for cosmic shear) from the two catalogues, and produce optical-optical, radio-optical and radio-radio spectra. The optical-optical auto-power spectrum was measured to a detection significance of 9.80σ\sigma and is consistent with previous observations of the same field. For radio spectra (which we do not calibrate, given the unknown nature of their systematics), although we do not detect significant radio-optical (1.50σ\sigma) or radio-radio (1.45σ\sigma) EE-mode power spectra, we do find the EE-mode spectra to be more consistent with the shear signal expected from previous studies than with a null signal, and vice versa for BB-mode and EBEB cross-correlation spectra. Our results give promise that future radio weak lensing surveys with larger source number densities over larger areas will have the capability to measure significant weak lensing signals.Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Estimating the weak-lensing rotation signal in radio cosmic shear surveys

    Weak lensing has become an increasingly important tool in cosmology and the use of galaxy shapes to measure cosmic shear has become routine. The weak-lensing distortion tensor contains two other effects in addition to the two components of shear: the convergence and rotation. The rotation mode is not measurable using the standard cosmic shear estimators based on galaxy shapes, as there is no information on the original shapes of the images before they were lensed. Due to this, no estimator has been proposed for the rotation mode in cosmological weak-lensing surveys, and the rotation mode has never been constrained. Here, we derive an estimator for this quantity, which is based on the use of radio polarisation measurements of the intrinsic position angles of galaxies. The rotation mode can be sourced by physics beyond Λ\LambdaCDM, and also offers the chance to perform consistency checks of Λ\LambdaCDM and of weak-lensing surveys themselves. We present simulations of this estimator and show that, for the pedagogical example of cosmic string spectra, this estimator could detect a signal that is consistent with the constraints from Planck. We examine the connection between the rotation mode and the shear BB-modes and thus how this estimator could help control systematics in future radio weak-lensing surveys

    Task Shifting To Nursing For A Sustainable Staffing Model Of School-Based Health Center In Under-Resourced Areas

    Background: There is a well-established link between health and education (Bundy and Guyatt 1996). An efficient and cost effective way to increase access to care is through school-based services. Methods: The purpose of this study is to develop a sustainable staffing model of a school-based health center in a country with limited health care resources. Two specific steps towards developing such a model are: (1) to critically review and analyze the evidence in the literature supporting an expanded nursing care practice model for the school-based health center, and (2) to merge the literature review findings with participatory field notes taken at a rural Kenyan school. An integrative review was triangulated with observational field notes. Online databases were reviewed. Data from 17 articles was compiled into a summary table. Field notes and transcriptions of recordings were categorized by the following themes: identified stakeholders, local health needs, local health practice, and local health services. The findings from the review were triangulated with the findings from participatory field notes of informal discussions and governmental documents. Results: The findings suggest equivalent outcomes between nurse-led care and physician-led care. Stakeholder involvement is key to addressing potential barriers. From these findings, a nurse-staffed, school-based health center model was developed, focusing on the nurse as the care provider. The nurse-staffing model identifies key institutional and governmental influences and their impact on the ability to achieve the goal of providing affordable, accessible, and acceptable quality health care for students in rural, under-resourced areas. Conclusion: The evidence from the review supports the nurse-staffed, school-based health center model and deems it an effective strategy for offering high quality, cost effective care to children in under resourced areas

    Measuring cosmic shear and birefringence using resolved radio sources

    We develop a new method of extracting simultaneous measurements of weak lensing shear and a local rotation of the plane of polarization using observations of resolved radio sources. We show that the direction of polarization is statistically linked with that of the gradient of the total intensity field, and this provides the basis of our method. Using a number of sources spread over the sky, this method allows constraints to be placed on cosmic shear and birefringence, and it can be applied to any resolved radio sources for which such a correlation exists. Assuming that the rotation and shear are constant across the source, we use this relationship to construct a quadratic estimator and investigate its properties using simulated observations. We develop a calibration scheme using simulations based on the observed images to mitigate a bias which occurs in the presence of measurement errors and an astrophysical scatter on the polarization. The method is applied directly to archival data of radio galaxies where we measure a mean rotation signal of \left=-2.03^{\circ}\pm0.75^{\circ} and an average shear compatible with zero using 30 reliable sources. This level of constraint on an overall rotation is comparable with current leading constraints from CMB experiments and is expected to increase by at least an order of magnitude with future high precision radio surveys, such as those performed by the SKA. We also measure the shear and rotation two-point correlation functions and estimate the number of sources required to detect shear and rotation correlations in future surveys.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables.     Muscle Development and Lineage-Specific Expression of CiMDF, the MyoD-Family Gene of Ciona intestinalis

    AbstractThe expression pattern of CiMDF, the MyoD-family gene of Ciona intestinalis, was analyzed in unmanipulated and microsurgically derived partial embryos. CiMDF encodes two transcripts during development (coding for distinct proteins), the smaller of which, CiMDFa, was detected in maternal RNA. Zygotic activity of CiMDF initiated in cleaving embryos of 32–64 cells. Both CiMDFa and CiMDFb transcripts were detected at this time; however, CiMDFa accumulated more rapidly before declining in abundance such that, by the early tail-formation stage, CiMDFb was more prevalent. Microsurgical isolations of various lineage blastomeres from the eight-cell stage were used to analyze CiMDF expression in the two embryonic lineages that give rise to larval tail muscle—autonomously specified primary cells and conditionally specified secondary cells. CiMDFa and CiMDFb transcripts were detected in both lineages, suggesting that neither functioned in a lineage-specific manner. The data also demonstrated that CiMDF expression was autonomous in the primary lineage (i.e., cells derived from the B4.1 blastomeres) and correlated with histospecific differentiation of muscle. In the secondary lineage (i.e., cells derived from the A4.1 and b4.2 blastomeres), CiMDF expression was conditional and, as in the primary lineage, correlated with muscle differentiation. These experiments reveal similar patterns of CiMDF activity in the primary and secondary muscle lineages and imply a requirement for the expression of this gene in both lineages during larval tail muscle development
