A Study of Some Factors Influencing the Nitrate Content of Oat Seedlings

    Get PDF
Analysis of samples of oat hay frequently reveals concentrations of nitrates sufficient to be toxic and cause occasional livestock losses. Pigweeds and sorghum having high concentrations of nitrate nitrogen have also been reported as being toxic to cattle. In view of this fact this study was begun to determine what factors might play a role in nitrate metabolism and the extent of their influence

Atomic level micromagnetic model of recording media switching at elevated temperatures

An atomic level micromagnetic model of granular recording media is developed and applied to examine external field-induced grain switching at elevated temperatures which captures non-uniform reversal modes. The results are compared with traditional methods which employ the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations based on uniformly magnetized grains with assigned intrinsic temperature profiles for M(T)M(T) and K(T)K(T). Using nominal parameters corresponding to high-anisotropy FePt-type media envisioned for Energy Assisted Magnetic Recording, our results demonstrate that atomic-level reversal slightly reduces the field required to switch grains at elevated temperatures, but results in larger fluctuations, when compared to a uniformly magnetized grain model.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

A Transformative Learning Experience: An Undergraduate Research Conference as Authentic Assessment

    Get PDF
This article explores an example of authentic assessment practised on the English and History undergraduate programmes at the University of Derby, involving modules which lead to a public conference. Drawing on notions of authenticity in assessment both as connected to professional scenarios and as potentially transformative for the student in a wider sense, we outline the nature of the modules and their place within broader programme-level assessment strategy. We then detail their impact in terms of public engagement and raising the profile of the disciplines as well as, crucially, student feedback. Overall, we offer this practice as an example of successful authentic assessment in the Humanities which can lead students to engage more critically with their discipline and to discover new and highly transferable skills

The measurement of attitudes toward abortion

    Get PDF
Attitudes towards abortion have been a focal point within politics and religion for many years. Many methods have been created to test these attitudes. For example, Hess and Rueb created a 13-item scale and demonstrated its validity. However, this scale has several potential shortcomings. The developers did not report the reliability of the scale and its factor structure. Further, this scale includes a neutral point and legal language. One of the purposes of the present study was to develop a 12-item scale to address these issues. The present study compares and contrasts these two scales. Psychology student\u27s participated in this study. The results indicated that both abortion scales were reliable and valid. A factor analysis indicated that the Hess and Rueb scale has 3 factors, whereas the researchers newly developed scale had two factors. Implications of these findings are discussed

    Nitrate Poisoning

    Get PDF
This bulletin presents a brief survey of the problem of nitrate poisoning, incorporating some of the experimental evidence secured at this laboratory and borrowing liberally of the data obtained by other investigators, so as to make possible a more complete report. It is by no means a comprehensive review of the field, but it is thought that the literature cited (and the references therein) provides an adequate cross-reference on the subject. The pharmacologic aspects of nitrate and nitrite, for example-studies on many of the nitro esters, have been intentionally omitted from this discussion
