A high resolution millimetre and submillimetre study of W3
The continuum bolometer receiver on the James Clerk Maxwell telescope has been used to map the dense core of the star formation region W3 with a spatial resolution of 15-20 arcsec. At 350 and 800 μm, the region appears as two principal peaks around the known IR sources IRS4 and IRS5, while at 1100 μm, a further peak is noted which is interpreted as being due to free-free emission around IRS2. Taking into account the free-free contribution to the intensity, the continuum dust emission from the region is found to be consistent with optically thin emission at all of the three wavelengths considered. Values for the dust optical depth, hydrogen column density, mass, and central density have been obtained for each of the main peaks
Qudit Quantum State Tomography
Recently quantum tomography has been proposed as a fundamental tool for
prototyping a few qubit quantum device. It allows the complete reconstruction
of the state produced from a given input into the device. From this
reconstructed density matrix, relevant quantum information quantities such as
the degree of entanglement and entropy can be calculated. Generally orthogonal
measurements have been discussed for this tomographic reconstruction. In this
paper, we extend the tomographic reconstruction technique to two new regimes.
First we show how non-orthogonal measurement allow the reconstruction of the
state of the system provided the measurements span the Hilbert space. We then
detail how quantum state tomography can be performed for multi qudits with a
specific example illustrating how to achieve this in one and two qutrit
systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

CO and CI maps of the starburst galaxy M82
The first map of an external galaxy in the 3P₁ - 3P0 fine-structure line of atomic carbon (CI) is presented towards the nucleus of the starbuster M82, and compared with the distinction of the CO J = 4 - 3 molecular emission. The CI traces features that are seen in lower transition CO maps, and shows that CI and the CO are well mixed and have similar spatial distributions. There are small differences between the CO J = 4 - 3 line and lower transition CO data towards the NE part of the molecular ring, where the emission is less prominent. The abundance ratio [CI]/[CO] across M82 is very high, with an average value ~ 0.5 across most of the nucleus, a factor at least 5 times that which is typical of dense molecular cloud cores seen in our own Galaxy. This means that on average, CI is overabundant towards M82. This result can be explained using models which provide enhancements to the CI abundance above normal Interstellar Medium values, a result of a greater cosmic ray flux in M82, or where there is substantial mixing of the gas
A model for the screen printing of Newtonian fluids
A preliminary investigation into aspects of the off-contact screen-printing process is presented. A mathematical model for the printing of a thin film of Newtonian fluid is proposed, in which the screen is modelled as a permeable membrane, and the entire region above and below the screen is flooded. By drawing upon widely used industrial circuit printing practices, the distinguished limit of greatest interest to this industry is identified. Numerical and asymptotic solutions of this distinguished limit are presented that reproduce many of the features observed in industrial screen-printing

Observations of the J = 2→1 transitions of 12C16O and 12C18O towards galactic H II regions
Observations are reported of the J = 2→1 transitions of CO and 12C18O at 230 and 219 GHz respectively from a number of galactic sources. A map of the central 1/2° × 1/2° of the Orion A molecular cloud is presented. The spectra are interpreted to derive molecular densities and abundance ratios in the molecular clouds observed
Effect of folic acid supplementation in pregnancy on preeclampsia: The folic acid clinical trial study

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Preeclampsia (PE) is hypertension with proteinuria that develops during pregnancy and affects at least 5% of pregnancies. The Effect of Folic Acid Supplementation in Pregnancy on Preeclampsia: the Folic Acid Clinical Trial (FACT) aims to recruit 3,656 high risk women to evaluate a new prevention strategy for PE: supplementation of folic acid throughout pregnancy. Pregnant women with increased risk of developing PE presenting to a trial participating center between 80/7 and 166/7 weeks of gestation are randomized in a 1: 1 ratio to folic acid 4.0 mg or placebo after written consent is obtained. Intent-to-treat population will be analyzed. The FACT study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 2009, and regulatory approval from Health Canada was obtained in 2010. A web-based randomization system and electronic data collection system provide the platform for participating centers to randomize their eligible participants and enter data in real time. To date we have twenty participating Canadian centers, of which eighteen are actively recruiting, and seven participating Australian centers, of which two are actively recruiting. Recruitment in Argentina, UK, Netherlands, Brazil, West Indies, and United States is expected to begin by the second or third quarter of 2013. This trial is registered with NCT01355159. © 2013 Shi Wu Wen et al.The Canadian Institutes of Healt
Evaluating implicit feedback models using searcher simulations
In this article we describe an evaluation of relevance feedback (RF) algorithms using searcher simulations. Since these algorithms select additional terms for query modification based on inferences made from searcher interaction, not on relevance information searchers explicitly provide (as in traditional RF), we refer to them as implicit feedback models. We introduce six different models that base their decisions on the interactions of searchers and use different approaches to rank query modification terms. The aim of this article is to determine which of these models should be used to assist searchers in the systems we develop. To evaluate these models we used searcher simulations that afforded us more control over the experimental conditions than experiments with human subjects and allowed complex interaction to be modeled without the need for costly human experimentation. The simulation-based evaluation methodology measures how well the models learn the distribution of terms across relevant documents (i.e., learn what information is relevant) and how well they improve search effectiveness (i.e., create effective search queries). Our findings show that an implicit feedback model based on Jeffrey's rule of conditioning outperformed other models under investigation
Linear Optical CNOT Gate in the Coincidence Basis
We describe the operation and tolerances of a non-deterministic, coincidence
basis, quantum CNOT gate for photonic qubits. It is constructed solely from
linear optical elements and requires only a two-photon source for its
demonstration.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review
