    A Friendly Article: The Qualitative Investigation of Anthropomorphism in Autistic and Nonautistic Adults

    BACKGROUND: Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics to nonhuman agents. This common tendency is thought to be driven by a heightened motivation for social connection and may therefore be expected to be reduced in autistic individuals given that this group has been claimed to demonstrate reduced social motivation in some settings. However, the subject of anthropomorphism in autism has not been studied extensively, and online forums, autobiographical accounts, and recent research on the topic suggest that, contrary to this expectation, anthropomorphism is commonly experienced by autistic individuals. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with eight autistic and eight nonautistic adults, all who reported a tendency to anthropomorphize. We recorded, transcribed, and analyzed the interviews according to the thematic analysis framework with the objective of identifying similarities and differences in the lived experiences of anthropomorphism in autistic and nonautistic individuals. RESULTS: Individuals in both groups described anthropomorphism as comforting, promoting a sense of safety and friendship with, and feelings of empathy and sympathy toward, nonhuman agents. Autistic individuals stressed the important role anthropomorphized agents played in their life, particularly when growing up: easing loneliness and helping develop an understanding of emotions and relationships. Participants also expressed negative aspects of the phenomenon, with both autistic and nonautistic individuals worrying about anthropomorphized agents' feelings and well-being. For some individuals, such thoughts and feelings caused distress and were experienced as intrusive due to their involuntary nature. CONCLUSIONS: Autistic and nonautistic adults showed very similar anthropomorphic patterns. Although preliminary in nature, our findings highlight characteristics of anthropomorphic experiences for autistic and nonautistic individuals, furthering our understanding of individual differences in social cognition. By illustrating the important role nonhuman agents may play in the lives of autistic individuals, our findings may also guide future research and practice

    Inhibition of large conductance calcium-dependent potassium channel by Rho-kinase contributes to agonist-induced vasoconstriction

    We tested the hypothesis that Rho-kinase inhibits the large-conductance, calcium and voltage dependent potassium (BKCa) channels thereby promoting vasoconstriction. Our results show that the Rho-kinase inhibitor, Y-27632, induced concentration-dependent relaxation in rat mesenteric artery. The selective BKCa channel inhibitors, iberiotoxin (0.1 mM) and tetraethylammonium (10 mM) increased the EC50 of Y-27632 more than 2-fold and decreased Y-27632-induced maximum relaxation (P<0.05). In the inside-out patch clamp configuration, constitutively active Rho-kinase (1mg/ml) attenuated BKCa channel activity induced by protein kinase G (PKG) (P<0.05). Y-27632 (10 mM) reversed the inhibitory effect of active Rhokinase (P<0.01). Furthermore, in the presence of Y-27632, addition of active Rho-kinase had no effect on PKG-stimulated BKCa channel activity. Taken together, our data suggest that Rho-kinase negatively regulates BKCa channels, thus providing a novel mechanism though which Rho-kinase increases smooth muscle contraction.Keywords: Rho, smooth muscle, hyperpolarization, vascular reactivity, mesenteric artery, patch clam

    A Holocene floodplain sequence from the Kirenga Valley, Lake Baikal region (Siberia), and its significance for molluscan and mammalian biogeography

    The archaeological record in the Baikal region is characterised by a marked discontinuity separating different groups of hunter-gatherers within the Neolithic period. A range of sedimentary archives has been studied to investigate this issue and whether it had an environmental cause. Our focus has been on floodplain sequences from river valleys, which can augment other higher resolution records such as those from lakes. Here we report on the molluscs and small vertebrates recovered from a Holocene floodplain sequence at a remote locality (Krasniy Yar XI) in the Kirenga Valley, in the Lake Baikal region of eastern Siberia. The sequence lacked the necessary temporal resolution to adequately address this archaeological question, but it did provide a valuable radiocarbon-dated record of local floodplain pedogenesis, molluscs and vertebrates over the last ∼7000 cal yr BP. Aquatic molluscs are more frequent during the early part of the record but they become scarce in the upper levels, which are dominated by land snails, especially species of Vallonia. Other noteworthy species include Vertigo microsphaera, recently discovered living in the area, and the first fossil records of V. kushiorensis, V. chytryi, and V. genesioides from the Baikal region. An exceptional feature of the molluscan record was the relatively high frequency of sinistral specimens of Cochlicopa, which occurred in 12/18 samples with a mean frequency of 9.8% (38/385). The vertebrates included specimens of southern birch mouse Sicista subtilis, unknown living in this part of Siberia with the closest records some 400 km to the southwest. These data demonstrate marked faunal and distributional shifts within the Holocene, reflecting local and regional environmental changes through time

    Efficient coupling into slow light photonic crystal waveguide without transition region: Role of evanescent modes

    We show that efficient coupling between fast and slow photonic crystal waveguide modes is possible, provided that there exist strong evanescent modes to match the waveguide fields across the interface. Evanescent modes are required when the propagating modes have substantially different modal fields, which occurs, for example, when coupling an index-guided mode and a gap-guided mode. ©2009 Optical Society of America

    Efficient slow-light coupling in a photonic crystal waveguide without transition region

    We consider the coupling into a slow mode that appears near an inflection point in the band structure of a photonic crystal waveguide. Remarkably, the coupling into this slow mode, which has a group index ng > 1000, can be essentially perfect without any transition region. We show that this efficient coupling occurs thanks to an evanescent mode in the slow medium, which has appreciable amplitude and helps satisfy the boundary conditions but does not transport any energy. © 2008 Optical Society of America

    Symmetry and degeneracy in microstructured optical fibers

    The symmetry of an optical waveguide determines its modal degeneracies. A fiber with rotational symmetry of order higher than 2 has modes that either are nondegenerate and support the complete fiber symmetry or are twofold degenerate pairs of lower symmetry. The latter case applies to the fundamental modes of perfect microstructured optical fibers, guaranteeing that such fibers are not birefringent. We explore two numerical methods and demonstrate their agreement with these symmetry constraints. © 2001 Optical Society of America

    Confinement losses in microstructured optical fibers

    We describe a multipole formulation that can be used for high-accuracy calculations of the full complex propagation constant of a microstructured optical fiber with a finite number of holes. We show how the imaginary part of the microstructure, which describes confinement losses not associated with absorption, varies with hole size, the number of rings of holes, and wavelength, and give the minimum number of rings of holes required for a specific loss for given parameters. © 2001 Optical Society of America

    Calculations of air-guided modes in photonic crystal fibers using the multipole method

    We demonstrate that a combination of multipole and Bloch methods is well suited for calculating the modes of air core photonic crystal fibers. This includes determining the reflective properties of the cladding, which is a prerequisite for the modal calculations. We demonstrate that in the presence of absorption, the modal losses can be substantially smaller than in the corresponding bulk medium. © 2001 Optical Society of America
