Psychometric properties of the Mental Health Recovery Star.
BACKGROUND: The Mental Health Recovery Star (MHRS) is a popular outcome measure rated collaboratively by staff and service users, but its psychometric properties are unknown. AIMS: To assess the MHRS's acceptability, reliability and convergent validity. METHOD: A total of 172 services users and 120 staff from in-patient and community services participated. Interrater reliability of staff-only ratings and test-retest reliability of staff-only and collaborative ratings were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Convergent validity between MHRS ratings and standardised measures of social functioning and recovery was assessed using Pearson correlation. The influence of collaboration on ratings was assessed using descriptive statistics and ICCs. RESULTS: The MHRS was relatively quick and easy to use and had good test-retest reliability, but interrater reliability was inadequate. Collaborative ratings were slightly higher than staff-only ratings. Convergent validity suggests it assesses social function more than recovery. CONCLUSIONS: The MHRS cannot be recommended as a routine clinical outcome tool but may facilitate collaborative care planning

Iowa has a rich and long history of grape production. Grapes were grown in the Council Bluffs area as early as 1857. In 1900 the US Agriculture Census showed that Iowa produced 7,403,900 pounds of grapes and 76,301 gallons of farm-processed wine. Iowa ranked sixth in grape production in 1919 in the United States with more that 12 million pounds. Iowa grape production peaked in 1929 with a yield of 15.8 million pounds. Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys Observations of the z=6.42 Quasar SDSS 1148+5251: A Leak in the Gunn-Peterson Trough
The Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys has been used to obtain a narrow-band
image of the weak emission peak seen at lambda=7205 A in the Gunn-Peterson Ly
beta absorption trough of the highest redshift quasar, SDSS J1148+5251. The
emission looks perfectly point-like; there is no evidence for the intervening
galaxy that we previously suggested might be contaminating the quasar spectrum.
We derive a more accurate astrometric position for the quasar in the two
filters and see no indication of gravitational lensing. We conclude that the
light in the Ly beta trough is leaking through two unusually transparent,
overlapping windows in the IGM absorption, one in the Ly beta forest at z ~ 6
and one in the Ly alpha forest at z ~ 5.
If there are significant optical depth variations on velocity scales small
compared with our spectral resolution (~150 km/s), the Ly alpha trough becomes
more transparent for a given Ly beta optical depth. Such variations can only
strengthen our conclusion that the fraction of neutral hydrogen in the IGM
increases dramatically at z>6. We argue that the transmission in the Ly beta
trough is not only a more sensitive measure of the neutral fraction than is Ly
alpha, it also provides a less biased estimator of the neutral hydrogen
fraction than does the Ly alpha transmission.Comment: Submitted to the Astronomical Journa
Impact of external sources of infection on the dynamics of bovine tuberculosis in modelled badger populations
Background The persistence of bovine TB (bTB) in various countries throughout the world is enhanced by the existence of wildlife hosts for the infection. In Britain and Ireland, the principal wildlife host for bTB is the badger (Meles meles). The objective of our study was to examine the dynamics of bTB in badgers in relation to both badger-derived infection from within the population and externally-derived, trickle-type, infection, such as could occur from other species or environmental sources, using a spatial stochastic simulation model. Results The presence of external sources of infection can increase mean prevalence and reduce the threshold group size for disease persistence. Above the threshold equilibrium group size of 6–8 individuals predicted by the model for bTB persistence in badgers based on internal infection alone, external sources of infection have relatively little impact on the persistence or level of disease. However, within a critical range of group sizes just below this threshold level, external infection becomes much more important in determining disease dynamics. Within this critical range, external infection increases the ratio of intra- to inter-group infections due to the greater probability of external infections entering fully-susceptible groups. The effect is to enable bTB persistence and increase bTB prevalence in badger populations which would not be able to maintain bTB based on internal infection alone. Conclusions External sources of bTB infection can contribute to the persistence of bTB in badger populations. In high-density badger populations, internal badger-derived infections occur at a sufficient rate that the additional effect of external sources in exacerbating disease is minimal. However, in lower-density populations, external sources of infection are much more important in enhancing bTB prevalence and persistence. In such circumstances, it is particularly important that control strategies to reduce bTB in badgers include efforts to minimise such external sources of infection
Chandra Observation of the Radio Source / X-ray Gas Interaction in the Cooling Flow Cluster Abell 2052
We present a Chandra observation of Abell 2052, a cooling flow cluster with a
central cD that hosts the complex radio source 3C 317. The data reveal
``holes'' in the X-ray emission that are coincident with the radio lobes. The
holes are surrounded by bright ``shells'' of X-ray emission. The data are
consistent with the radio source displacing and compressing, and at the same
time being confined by, the X-ray gas. The compression of the X-ray shells
appears to have been relatively gentle and, at most, slightly transonic. The
pressure in the X-ray gas (the shells and surrounding cooler gas) is
approximately an order of magnitude higher than the minimum pressure derived
for the radio source, suggesting that an additional source of pressure is
needed to support the radio plasma. The compression of the X-ray shells has
speeded up the cooling of the shells, and optical emission line filaments are
