National and Community Service: Challenges and Opportunities for People with Disabilities to Volunteer in America

    Get PDF
The recently implemented National and Community Service Act of 1990 calls for Americans of all race, age, ability, and economic status to return to service in their community. To help facilitate this call to service, the National Commission on Community Service has allocated approximately 70 million dollars in grants. The Act focuses on the involvement of youth, including those who are economically disadvantaged and with disabilities. This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by community service program planners and disability organizations, in their efforts to integrate volunteers with disabilities in service to the community. The paper concludes with a discussion of informal and formal approaches to involving participants of varying abilities

Representation and design of wavelets using unitary circuits

    Get PDF
The representation of discrete, compact wavelet transformations (WTs) as circuits of local unitary gates is discussed. We employ a similar formalism as used in the multiscale representation of quantum many-body wave functions using unitary circuits, further cementing the relation established in the literature between classical and quantum multiscale methods. An algorithm for constructing the circuit representation of known orthogonal, dyadic, discrete WTs is presented, and the explicit representation for Daubechies wavelets, coiflets, and symlets is provided. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of the circuit formalism in designing WTs, including various classes of symmetric wavelets and multiwavelets, boundary wavelets, and biorthogonal wavelets

Determinants of the perception of rotation in depth or translation in apparent motion

    Get PDF
Depth ambiguous apparent motion may occur when two outline shapes with marked orientation differences are used in an apparent motion sequence, e.g. when two arrow-like shapes are presented pointing in opposite directions. In such cases two distinct percepts may be reported: the object may appear to undergo a two dimensional-movement accompanied by a distortion of the contours (plastic deformation) or it may appear to rotate in depth (rigid rotation). The terms in brackets were coined by Kolers and Pomerantz (1971) to describe the phenomena reported by their subjects

Factors influencing the perception of depth ambiguous apparent motion.

what does it mean to say that an object moves? A simple answer would be to say that an object moves when it changes its spatial location during some interval of time. However, the concept of motion is considerably more complex than this simplistic definition would imply. The subtlety of the concept of motion was evident to Zeno of Elea who proposed a set of paradoxes concerning motion some 2500 years ago. Zeno's paradoxes were not resolved until the advent of modern mathematics, particularly differential calculus (Russell, 1938, pp. 347—354). An intuitive grasp of the nature of space and time is insufficient to accurately describe the motion of objects in the real world but in the phenomenal world a simple definition‘ will suffice. Despite some shortcomings, the definition of motion adopted for this discussion is that "an object appears to move when it changes its apparent spatial location during a given interval of time"

    Spacelab Flight Operations

    Get PDF
This paper will cover the primary activities involved in conducting Spacelab flight operations. Spacelab flight operations are characterized by a unique partnership between the operators of the Space Transportation System (STS) and the Mission Management organization. This partnership involves both the activities of the flight control personnel and the flight crew and must exist as an integrated team in order to be able to successfully complete a Spacelab flight. This paper will discuss an overview of how this partnership functions from the initial planning phase though the actual flight conduct. The responsibilities and functions of the flight crew members will be discussed as well as the make up of the flight control team. A typical flight scenario describing the basic operation of the Spacelab will be covered. A description of the Mission Control Center (MCC) and Payload Operations Control Center-(POCC) capabilities wiH be given

Librarians as Partners: Moving from Research Supporters to Research Partners

    Get PDF
Academic libraries have long been discussing the need to remain relevant and demonstrate value to their institutions. This paper explores how academic libraries can expand the concept of embedded librarianship to create research partnerships at universities. Such partnerships will enhance value to the institutional research output, as well as increase the visibility of unique librarian skills and library resources. Using a case study from a public research I university, the author discusses innovative roles for librarians on research teams. Embedding academic librarians fully into the research enterprise recognizes the significant contributions that librarians can make as research partners.National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Researc
