Knowledge As a Factor to Improve Competitiveness for a Firm in Rural Norway

Aker Verdal produces steel jackets for the offshore industry and is situated in Trøndelag in peripheral Norway. The firm has about 600 employees and a yearly production value of about 200 mill. $. The main competitors are in the southern part of Europe, for example Dragados in Spain. The wage level at Dragados is about 50% lower than at Aker Verdal, but Aker has won several contracts in the later years. One reason for this is that Aker has a knowledge component that contributes to the compensation for higher wage costs. The firm wants to analyze how it acquires and develops knowledge capital by looking at: · Identification: What are the central knowledge processes that take place · Measurement: What kind of indicators can be used · Management: How is management of knowledge integrated in the general management of the firm In this paper we will look at a case study and see how that can be understood in a theoretical framework. We will also analyze the advantages and disadvantages of peripheral location and its influence on knowledge creation and development.

How transfer of knowledge can be linked to productivity and competitiveness of the firm - theoretical considerations and case study

A mais importante contribuição que a gestão precisa fazer no século XXI é aumentar a produtividade do trabalho de conhecimento e o conhecimento dos trabalhadores. Este é o ponto de partida para este artigo, onde primeiramente nós fazemos uma discussão teórica sobre como as empresas podem utilizar o conhecimento para melhorar a competitividade. Isto baseia-se no pressuposto de que a utilização de recursos tangíveis da firma depende de como eles são combinados e aplicados, o que por sua vez é uma função do conhecimento da firma. Na parte empírica deste artigo nós analisamos como esses processos ocorrem em operações da linha de produção e funções de suporte. O principal resultado é que o conhecimento é importante, mas é essencial desenvolver uma compreensão da evolução dos recursos humanos em todos os níveis do sistema de gestão da empresa e garantir que os gestores são capazes de transferir conhecimento entre os grupos.The most important contribution management needs to make in the 21st century is to increase the productivity of knowledge work and knowledge workers. This is the point of departure for this article where we first give a theoretical discussion about how firms can utilize knowledge to improve competitiveness. This builds on the assumption that the firm’s utilization of tangible resources depends on how they are combined and applied, which is in turn, a function of the firm’s knowledge. In the empirical part of the article, we analyze how these processes take place in assembly line operations and support functions. The main result is that although knowledge itself is important, it is essential to develop an understanding of human resource developments on all levels of the managerial system of the firm and ensure that the managers are able to transfer knowledge between groups

Samfunnsøkonomisk analyse av bru over Beitstadsundet

I 1984 ble det utarbeidet en regional analyse av indre Trondheimsfjordsområdet med utgangspunkt i kommunene Verran, Mosvik og Leksvik (Westeren 1984). Høsten 2004 tok Kommunenes Sentralforbund (KS) i Nord-Trøndelag initiativ til et utredningsprogram om kommunestruktur i Nord-Trøndelag. HiNT ble oppfordret av KS til å sende inn et forslag til et prosjekt med arbeidstittel ”Framtida for jordbruket i Grong og Overhalla”. Bakgrunnen for dette var at Nord-Trøndelagsforskning i samarbeid med Nord- Trøndelag Distriktshøgskole (nå HiNT) i tidsrommet 1993-95 hadde gjennomført et prosjekt om primærnæringenes betydning og omstilling på bygdene – med eksempler fra Grong og Overhalla.KS i Nord-Trøndelag fylkeskommune, landbrukskontorene i Grong og Overhall

Growth Trends and Economic Impacts of Selected Industries on the Puerto Rico Economy

The main purpose of this article is to account for the difference between the GDP and GNP growth patterns in the Puerto Rico economy over the last four decades, where GDP represents the total output of the economy while GNP represents the total income remaining on Puerto Rico. We focus on growth strategies in general and on how the effects of one of the major economic policies, section 936 of the Internal Revenue Code (936 IRC), has influenced the development of the Puerto Rico economy in particular. The analysis shows that substantial parts of the income created from Puerto Rico’s industrial expansion have been transferred to the U.S. by the large exports-producing companies in Puerto Rico.
