A Modified Stern-Gerlach Experiment Using a Quantum Two-State Magnetic Field
The Stern-Gerlach experiment has played an important role in our
understanding of quantum behavior. We propose and analyze a modified version of
this experiment where the magnetic field of the detector is in a quantum
superposition, which may be experimentally realized using a superconducting
flux qubit. We show that if incident spin- particles couple with the
two-state magnetic field, a discrete target distribution results that resembles
the distribution in the classical Stern-Gerlach experiment. As an application
of the general result, we compute the distribution for a square waveform of the
incident fermion. This experimental setup allows us to establish: (1) the
quantization of the intrinsic angular momentum of a spin- particle, and
(2) a correlation between EPR pairs leading to nonlocality, without necessarily
collapsing the particle's spin wavefunction.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Globular Cluster Population of Hickson Compact Group 22a and 90c
We present the first measurement of the globular cluster populations of
galaxies in Hickson compact groups, in order to investigate the effect of these
high density environments on the formation and evolution of globular cluster
systems. Based on V and R band images that we obtained of HCG 22a and HCG 90c
with the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT), we find a total globular cluster
population of for HCG 22a and for 90c. The specific
frequency for HCG 22a was found to be and for HCG 90c. A power-law fit to the globular cluster radial profile of HCG
22a yields and for HCG 90c we found . A comparison of the globular cluster radial profiles with
the surface brightness of the parent galaxy shows that the globular cluster
systems are at least as extended as the halo light. The measured values for the
specific frequency are consistent with a scenario in which the host galaxies
were in a low density ``field-like'' environment when they formed their

The Australian Incident Monitoring Study in Intensive Care: AIMS-ICU. The development and evaluation of an incident reporting system in intensive care

Incidents and accidents can be caused by human error, by problems inherent in complex systems, or by a combination of these. Study objectives were to develop and evaluate an incident reporting system. A report form was designed eliciting a description of the incident, contextual information and contributing factors. Staff group sessions using open-ended questions, observations in the workplace and a review of earlier narratives were used to develop the report form. Three intensive care units participated in a two-month evaluation study. Feedback questionnaires were used to assess staff attitudes and understanding, project design and organization. These demonstrated a positive attitude and good understanding by more than 90% participants. Errors in communication, technique, problem recognition and charting were the predisposing factors most commonly chosen in the 128 incidents reported. Propagation of Exchange Bias in CoFe/FeMn/CoFe Trilayers
CoFe/FeMn, FeMn/CoFe bilayers and CoFe/FeMn/CoFe trilayers were grown in
magnetic field and at room temperature. The exchange bias field
depends strongly on the order of depositions and is much higher at CoFe/FeMn
than at FeMn/CoFe interfaces. By combining the two bilayer structures into
symmetric CoFe/FeMn()/CoFe trilayers, and
of the top and bottom CoFe layers, respectively, are both enhanced.
Reducing of the trilayers also results in enhancements of
both and . These results evidence the propagation of
exchange bias between the two CoFe/FeMn and FeMn/CoFe interfaces mediated by
the FeMn antiferromagnetic order
Very Extended and at low levels, Gravity and Supergravity
We define a level for a large class of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras. Using
this we find the representation content of very extended and
(i.e. ) at low levels in terms of and
representations respectively. The results are consistent with the conjectured
very extended and symmetries of gravity and maximal supergravity
theories given respectively in hep-th/0104081 and hep-th/0107209. We explain

Alignments of the Dominant Galaxies in Poor Clusters
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in
poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer
Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned
with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding
distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible
for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness.
We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of
material into clusters along large-scale filaments.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
