Invited Essay: Investigating Family Voices from the Margins
This essay surveys articles from the Journal of Family Communicationto make the argument that our journal needs to feature more scholarship on families that heretofore have been virtually ignored or marginalized. We discuss four types of diversity to consider when exploring questions of family communication, and review three imperatives for making this argument
Automated transition state theory calculations for high-throughput kinetics
A scarcity of known chemical kinetic parameters leads to the use of many
reaction rate estimates, which are not always sufficiently accurate, in the
construction of detailed kinetic models. To reduce the reliance on these
estimates and improve the accuracy of predictive kinetic models, we have
developed a high-throughput, fully automated, reaction rate calculation method,
AutoTST. The algorithm integrates automated saddle-point geometry search
methods and a canonical transition state theory kinetics calculator. The
automatically calculated reaction rates compare favorably to existing estimated
rates. Comparison against high level theoretical calculations show the new
automated method performs better than rate estimates when the estimate is made
by a poor analogy. The method will improve by accounting for internal rotor
contributions and by improving methods to determine molecular symmetry.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure

Perceptual supports for one-to-one correspondence in the conservation of number
This study compared provoked and spontaneous one-to-one correspondence along with two tasks having more perceptual support for correspondence. These four levels of correspondence appeared in a conservation of number condition and two conservation-related conditions (a partially static array or a static array). There were two sets of stimuli (toy animals or corks) in each condition. In opposition to Piaget's predictions, the four levels of correspondence did not differ in difficulty for kindergarteners. There was a strong order effect (p<.001) in the direction of increasing conservation over the eight trials. There was some evidence that the standard conservation condition was easier than the other two conditions. Implications for Piaget's theory are discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/21763/1/0000157.pd
Adaptive optics imaging of a stellar occultation by Titan
We present resolved images of the occultation of a binary star by Titan, recorded with the Palomar Observatory adaptive optics system on 20 December 2001 UT. These constitute the first resolved observations of a stellar occultation by a small body, and demonstrate several unique capabilities of diffraction-limited imaging systems for the study of planetary atmospheres. Two refracted stellar images are visible on Titan's limb throughout both events, displaying scintillations due to local density variations. Precise relative astrometry of the refracted stellar images with respect to the unnocculted component of the binary allows us to directly measure their altitude in Titan's atmosphere. Their changing positions also lead to simple demonstration of the finite oblateness of surfaces of constant pressure in Titan's mid-latitude stratosphere, consistent with the only previous measurement of Titan's zonal wind field
