    On the Observables Describing a Quantum Reference Frame

    A reference frame F is described by the element g of the Poincare' group P which connects F with a given fixed frame F_0. If F is a quantum frame, defined by a physical object following the laws of quantum physics, the parameters of g have to be considered as quantum observables. However, these observables are not compatible and some of them, namely the coordinates of the origin of F, cannot be represented by self-adjoint operators. Both these difficulties can be overcome by considering a positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) on P, covariant with respect to the left translations of the group, namely a covariance system. We develop a construction procedure for this kind of mathematical structure. The formalism is also used to discuss the quantum observables measured with respect to a quantum reference frame.Comment: 23 pages, no figure

    Moments of nonclassicality quasiprobabilities

    A method is introduced for the verification of nonclassicality in terms of moments of nonclassicality quasiprobability distributions. The latter are easily obtained from experimental data and will be denoted as nonclassicality moments. Their relation to normally-ordered moments is derived, which enables us to verify nonclassicality by using well established criteria. Alternatively, nonclassicality criteria are directly formulated in terms of nonclassicality moments. The latter converge in proper limits to the usually used criteria, as is illustrated for squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Our theory also yields expectation values of any observable in terms of nonclassicality moments.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Determination of islet cell antibodies using an ELISA system with a preparation of rat insulinoma (RIN A2) cells

    An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established for the detection of islet cell antibodies in human sera. The antigen was prepared from rat insulinoma (RIN A2) cells. Cells were dissociated in lysis buffer and the lysate was centrifuged at 100,000 x g. The supernatant was used to coat microtiter ELISA plates (10 micrograms protein/ml in PBS pH 7.2). Non-specific binding sites on the plates were blocked with 2% PBS-BSA. Human test sera were preabsorbed on separate plates using 2% PBS-BSA and incubated on precoated plates at an optimal dilution of 1/10 in 60 mM PBS for 60 min at 37 degrees C. Phosphatase-labeled anti-human IgG serum and phosphatase substrate were applied and the reaction was stopped by adding 3 M NaOH. Out of 90 sera from type I diabetic patients, 47 (52.2%) reacted in the new ELISA whereas none of 15 type II diabetics, 50 sera containing non-islet specific antibodies or 100 normal controls were positive. In the same group of patients, ICA were positive in 63.3%. When both, the ELISA and conventional ICA testing were applied, the number of positives was increased to 83%. The ICA-ELISA with the above described antigen preparation provides a well standardized and reproducible test method which is highly specific for type I diabetes. It may therefore be useful for large screening procedures

    Barrier-controlled carrier transport in microcrystalline semiconducting materials: Description within a unified model

    A recently developed model that unifies the ballistic and diffusive transport mechanisms is applied in a theoretical study of carrier transport across potential barriers at grain boundaries in microcrystalline semiconducting materials. In the unified model, the conductance depends on the detailed structure of the band edge profile and in a nonlinear way on the carrier mean free path. Equilibrium band edge profiles are calculated within the trapping model for samples made up of a linear chain of identical grains. Quantum corrections allowing for tunneling are included in the calculation of electron mobilities. The dependence of the mobilities on carrier mean free path, grain length, number of grains, and temperature is examined, and appreciable departures from the results of the thermionic-field-emission model are found. Specifically, the unified model is applied in an analysis of Hall mobility data for n-type microcrystalline Si thin films in the range of thermally activated transport. Owing mainly to the effect of tunneling, potential barrier heights derived from the data are substantially larger than the activation energies of the Hall mobilities. The specific features of the unified model, however, cannot be resolved within the rather large uncertainties of the analysis.Comment: REVTex, 19 pages, 9 figures; to appear in J. Appl. Phy

    Semiotics is hardly known in German business literature and management practice, despite the fact that its methodological approaches to discourse analysis have already been broadly absorbed by management theory in France and the United States. The present contribution points out why the general echo of semiotic theory and its numerous applications to business administration has remained limited so far, especially when compared with its potential for describing and explaining management problems. It is important, then, to show what the object of semiotic research is, independent of any semiotic orientation or school. What tools have been developed so far, and which discourses in business administration were chosen to apply these tools? The problems limiting a broader use of semiotic instruments in business administration are explained in detail, and the research perspectives are illustrated. Die in der deutschsprachigen Betriebswirtschaftslehre (BWL) noch wenig bekannte Semiotik und die in ihrem Rahmen entwickelten methodologischen Ansätze zur Analyse von Diskursen haben insbesondere in Frankreich und in den USA schon eine weite Verbreitung gefunden. Das Echo, auf welches die Semiotik trifft, bleibt im Vergleich zum Beitrag, den sie hinsichtlich der Beschreibung und Erklärung betriebswirtschaftlicher Tatbestände leisten könnte, noch sehr beschränkt - und dies, obwohl ihre grundsätzliche wissenschaftliche Leistungsfähigkeit inzwischen an Hand zahlreicher Beispiele aus dem betriebswirtschaftlichen Bereich belegt werden konnte. Es ist deshalb wichtig und interessant zu zeigen, was der Forschungsgegenstand der Semiotik ist - und zwar unabhängig von den verschiedenen Schulen der Semiotik. Welche Instrumente hat sie entwickelt? Auf welche betriebswirtschaftlichen Diskurse sind diese Instrumente bereits angewandt worden? Zum Schluss werden die Probleme dargestellt, die einen breiteren Einsatz semiotischer Instrumente in der Betriebswirtschaftslehre behindern und dabei auch die verschiedenen Forschungsrichtungen erläutert

    Forage Production and Grazing Behaviour of Beef Cattle in Agrosilvopastoral Systems in Brazil during the Dry Season

    We aimed at evaluating the microclimate, canopy structure, and grazing behaviour of cattle on Brachiaria sp. pastures within continuous pasture (CON), integrated crop-livestock (ICL), and crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems in Brazilian dry season. Forage accumulation was monthly assessed in four paddocks per system from May to August 2019. To characterize the microclimate, air temperature and relative humidity were measured every hour and temperature-humidity index calculated. Grazing behaviour of 12 Nellore heifers per system (mean bodyweight 355 standard deviation±32.6 kg) was recorded by chewing sensors on nine continuous days (1 d adaptation + 8 d measurement) of three 15-d periods. Four animals per system were evaluated per period (n=3 systems x 3 animals x 3 periods x 8 d). Data were analysed by mixed model using SAS v9.4. Statistical significances were tested at P\u3c 0.05. Across the whole dry season, heifers were exposed to 343 hours of moderate heat stress and 76 hours of severe heat stress in CON and ICL. Instead, 342 hours of moderate heat stress but no severe heat stress conditions were observed in ICLF. Forage accumulation rate was greater in CON than ICLF, with no differences between ICLF and ICL. There were no differences between the systems for proportions of green leaf and dead plant material, although dead material accounted for 73% of total forage biomass on dry matter basis. Pasture in ICL was taller and had greater stem proportion than CON and ICLF. Forage canopy structure likely reduced bite mass in CON and ICL. As a compensatory mechanism, heifers in CON and ICL increased their number of grazing bites and prolonged their daily grazing time (in CON) as compared to animals in ICLF. In summary, under conditions of Brazilian dry season, grazing behaviour of Nellore heifers seems to be more influenced by canopy structure than by microclimatic factors
