Recoil and Threshold Corrections in Short-distance Cross Sections
We identify and resum corrections associated with the kinematic recoil of the
hard scattering against soft-gluon emission in single-particle inclusive cross
sections. The method avoids double counting and conserves the flow of partonic
energy. It reproduces threshold resummation for high-p_T single-particle cross
sections, when recoil is neglected, and Q_T-resummation at low Q_T, when
higher-order threshold logarithms are suppressed. We exhibit explicit resummed
cross sections, accurate to next-to-leading logarithm, for electroweak
annihilation and prompt photon inclusive cross sections.Comment: minor modifications of the text, some references added. 51 pages,

Joint Resummation for Higgs Production
We study the application of the joint resummation formalism to Higgs
production via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC, defining inverse transforms by
analytic continuation. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We find
that at low Q_T the resummed Higgs Q_T distributions are comparable in the
joint and pure-Q_T formalisms, with relatively small influence from threshold
enhancement in this range. We find a modest (about ten percent) decrease in the

Coherent States of the q--Canonical Commutation Relations
For the -deformed canonical commutation relations for in some Hilbert
space we consider representations generated from a vector
satisfying , where .
We show that such a representation exists if and only if .
Moreover, for these representations are unitarily equivalent
to the Fock representation (obtained for ). On the other hand
representations obtained for different unit vectors are disjoint. We
show that the universal C*-algebra for the relations has a largest proper,
closed, two-sided ideal. The quotient by this ideal is a natural -analogue
of the Cuntz algebra (obtained for ). We discuss the Conjecture that, for
, this analogue should, in fact, be equal to the Cuntz algebra
itself. In the limiting cases we determine all irreducible
representations of the relations, and characterize those which can be obtained

A Monte-Carlo generator for statistical hadronization in high energy e+e- collisions
We present a Monte-Carlo implementation of the Statistical Hadronization
Model in e+e- collisions. The physical scheme is based on the statistical
hadronization of massive clusters produced by the event generator Herwig within
the microcanonical ensemble. We present a preliminary comparison of several
observables with measurements in e+e- collisions at the Z peak. Although a fine
tuning of the model parameters is not carried out, a general good agreement

Towards a global analysis of polarized parton distributions
We present a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without any
approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into
global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up
in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from
polarized proton-proton collisions, but not limited to this case. The
usefulness and practicability of this method is demonstrated for the
semi-inclusive production of hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering and the
transverse momentum distribution of ``prompt'' photons in pp collisions, and a
case study for a future global analysis of polarized parton densities is

Joint resummation in electroweak boson production
We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism
to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This
formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large
threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact
parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation
procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section
for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly
in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine
the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement
these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse

The microscopic spin-phonon coupling constants in CuGeO_3
Using RPA results, mean field theory, and refined data for the polarization
vectors we determine the coupling constants of the four Peierls-active phonon
modes to the spin chains of CuGeO_3. We then derive the values of the coupling
of the spin system to the linear ionic displacements, the bond lengths and the
angles between bonds. Our values are consistent with microscopic theories and
various experimental results. We discuss the applicability of static approaches
to the spin-phonon coupling. The c-axis anomaly of the thermal expansion is
explained. We give the values of the coupling constants in an effective

Asymmetric jet correlations in p p^\uparrow scattering
We propose that back-to-back correlations in azimuthal angle of jets produced
in collisions of unpolarized with transversely polarized proton beams could be
used to determine Sivers functions. The corresponding single-spin asymmetry is
not power-suppressed, but is subject to Sudakov suppression. We present
estimates of the asymmetry (without and with Sudakov effects) for RHIC at jet
transverse momenta of ~10 GeV and show that it may reach a few per cent or more

Investigation of the Properties of Galactic Cosmic Rays with the KASCADE-Grande Experiment
The properties of galactic cosmic rays are investigated with the
KASCADE-Grande experiment in the energy range between and

Safety Outcomes and Near-Adult Height Gain of Growth Hormone-Treated Children with SHOX Deficiency: Data from an Observational Study and a Clinical Trial
Background/Aims: To assess auxological and safety data for growth hormone (GH)-Treated children with SHOX deficiency. Methods: Data were examined for GH-Treated SHOX-deficient children (n = 521) from the observational Genetics and Neuroendocrinology of Short Stature International Study (GeNeSIS). For patients with near-Adult height information, GeNeSIS results (n = 90) were compared with a clinical trial (n = 28) of SHOX-deficient patients. Near-Adult height was expressed as standard deviation score (SDS) for chronological age, potentially increasing the observed effect of treatment. Results: Most SHOX-deficient patients in GeNeSIS had diagnoses of Leri-Weill syndrome (n = 292) or non-syndromic short stature (n = 228). For GeNeSIS patients with near-Adult height data, mean age at GH treatment start was 11.0 years, treatment duration 4.4 years, and height SDS gain 0.83 (95% confidence interval 0.49-1.17). Respective ages, GH treatment durations and height SDS gains for GeNeSIS patients prepubertal at baseline (n = 42) were 9.2 years, 6.0 years and 1.19 (0.76-1.62), and for the clinical trial cohort they were 9.2 years, 6.0 years and 1.25 (0.92-1.58). No new GH-related safety concerns were identified. Conclusion: Patients with SHOX deficiency who had started GH treatment before puberty in routine clinical practice had a similar height gain to that of patients in the clinical trial on which approval for the indication was based, with no new safety concerns
