    Challenges of refractive cataract surgery in the era of myopia epidemic: a mini-review

    Myopia is the leading cause of visual impairment in the world. With ever-increasing prevalence in these years, it creates an alarming global epidemic. In addition to the difficulty in seeing distant objects, myopia also increases the risk of cataract and advances its onset, greatly affecting the productivity of myopes of working age. Cataract management in myopic eyes, especially highly myopic eyes is originally more complicated than that in normal eyes, whereas the growing population of cataract with myopia, increasing popularity of corneal and lens based refractive surgery, and rising demand for spectacle independence after cataract surgery all further pose unprecedented challenges to ophthalmologists. Previous history of corneal refractive surgery and existence of implantable collamer lens will both affect the accuracy of biometry including measurement of corneal curvature and axial length before cataract surgery, which may result in larger intraocular lens (IOL) power prediction errors and a compromise in the surgical outcome especially in a refractive cataract surgery. A prudent choice of formula for cataract patients with different characteristics is essential in improving this condition. Besides, the characteristics of myopic eyes might affect the long-term stability of IOL, which is important for the maintenance of visual outcomes especially after the implantation of premium IOLs, thus a proper selection of IOL accordingly is crucial. In this mini-review, we provide an overview of the impact of myopia epidemic on treatment for cataract and to discuss new challenges that surgeons may encounter in the foreseeable future when planning refractive cataract surgery for myopic patients

    Spontaneous pregnancy after tracking ovulation during menstruation: A case report of a woman with premature ovarian insufficiency and repeated failure of in vitro fertilization

    The diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is devastating in women of reproductive age because of the small chance of spontaneous pregnancy. Here, we report a very rare case with POI and repeated failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) where the final result was natural fertilization following guidance to have sexual intercourse during menstruation as ovulation was monitored. Estradiol valerate was used to increase the thickness of the endometrium and stop the menstrual bleeding. There was a serum level of 208.44 IU/L of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 14 days after the ovulation. Later, a series of transvaginal ultrasounds also indicated a normal-appearing intra-uterine pregnancy. A healthy baby girl was delivered at term by means of cesarean section. Our report suggested that although the chance of spontaneous pregnancy is relatively low in patients with POI with repeated IVF failures, as long as ovulation does occur, even if it happens during menstruation, natural pregnancy is still worth trying with a series of proper and personalized treatments

    Soil Chemical Properties Depending on Fertilization and Management in China: A Meta-Analysis

    The long-term overuse of fertilizers negatively affects soil chemical properties and health, causing unsustainable agricultural development. Although many studies have focused on the effects of long-term fertilization on soil properties, few comparative and comprehensive studies have been conducted on fertilization management over the past 35 years in China. This meta-analysis (2058 data) evaluated the effects of the fertilizer, climate, crop types, cultivation duration and soil texture on the soil chemical properties of Chinese croplands. NPKM (NPK fertilizers + manure) led to the highest increase in pH (−0.1), soil organic carbon (SOC) (+67%), total nitrogen (TN) (+63%), alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen (AN) (+70%), total phosphorus (TP) (+149%) and available potassium (AK) (+281%) compared to the unfertilized control, while the sole nitrogen fertilizer (N) led to the lowest increase. The SOC (+115%) and TN (+84%) showed the highest increase under the influence of NPKM in an arid region. The increase in the chemical properties was higher in unflooded crops, with the maximum increase in the wheat–maize rotation, compared to rice, under NPKM. The SOC and TN increased faster under the influence of organic fertilizers (manure or straw) compared to mineral fertilization. Fertilizers produced faster effects on the change in the SOC and TN in sandy loam compared to the control. Fertilizers showed the highest and lowest effects on change in pH, organic C to total N ratio (C/N), TP and TK in clay loam with the cultivation duration. NPKM greatly increased the C/N compared to NPK in an arid region by 1.74 times and in wheat by 1.86 times. Reaching the same SOC increase, the lowest TN increase was observed in wheat, and the lowest increase in TP and AK was observed in rice, compared to the other crops. These results suggest that organic fertilizers (manure or straw) play important roles in improving soil fertility and in acidification. NPKM greatly increased the potential for soil C sequestration in wheat and in the arid region. The small increases in TP and TK can increase the SOC in rice and in the humid region. Therefore, considering the crop types and climatic conditions, reduced fertilization and the combination of mineral fertilizers with manure may be the best ways to avoid agricultural soil deterioration and increase soil carbon sequestration

    A Scheme for Verification on Data Integrity in Mobile Multicloud Computing Environment

    In order to verify the data integrity in mobile multicloud computing environment, a MMCDIV (mobile multicloud data integrity verification) scheme is proposed. First, the computability and nondegeneracy of verification can be obtained by adopting BLS (Boneh-Lynn-Shacham) short signature scheme. Second, communication overhead is reduced based on HVR (Homomorphic Verifiable Response) with random masking and sMHT (sequence-enforced Merkle hash tree) construction. Finally, considering the resource constraints of mobile devices, data integrity is verified by lightweight computing and low data transmission. The scheme improves shortage that mobile device communication and computing power are limited, it supports dynamic data operation in mobile multicloud environment, and data integrity can be verified without using direct source file block. Experimental results also demonstrate that this scheme can achieve a lower cost of computing and communications

    Integration of aggregation-induced emission and delayed fluorescence into electronic donor–acceptor conjugates

    A series of luminogens comprised electron donors and acceptors are found to possess two types of interesting photophysical processes of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and delayed fluorescence. According to theory calculation, restriction of intramolecular motions accounts for their AIE characteristics. Moreover, a separated distribution of the HOMOs and the LUMOs of these luminogens leads to small DEST values and therefore delayed fluorescence

    Optimal configuration of energy storage considering flexibility requirements and operational risks in a power system

    The integration of renewable energy units into power systems brings a huge challenge to the flexible regulation ability. As an efficient and convenient flexible resource, energy storage systems (ESSs) have the advantages of fast-response characteristics and bi-directional power conversion, which can provide flexible support for the power system. This paper establishes an optimization model for the ESS based on a bi-level programming model. The upper-level model optimizes the decision strategy of ESS configuration planning. The lower-level model is based on scenario analysis theory to simulate the operation of typical daily scenarios. Flexibility requirement constraints are added to characterize the required flexibility resources of the power system. In addition, the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is applied to characterize the risk of wind curtailment and load shedding during operation. To simplify the model, a set of association constraints is introduced to convert the original bi-level programming model into a direct-solvable single-level mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed model is verified through case studies
