    Construction of a ternary component chip with enhanced desorption efficiency for laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry based metabolic fingerprinting

    Introduction:In vitro metabolic fingerprinting encodes diverse diseases for clinical practice, while tedious sample pretreatment in bio-samples has largely hindered its universal application. Designed materials are highly demanded to construct diagnostic tools for high-throughput metabolic information extraction.Results: Herein, a ternary component chip composed of mesoporous silica substrate, plasmonic matrix, and perfluoroalkyl initiator is constructed for direct metabolic fingerprinting of biofluids by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry.Method: The performance of the designed chip is optimized in terms of silica pore size, gold sputtering time, and initiator loading parameter. The optimized chip can be coupled with microarrays to realize fast, high-throughput (∼second/sample), and microscaled (∼1 μL) sample analysis in human urine without any enrichment or purification. On-chip urine fingerprints further allow for differentiation between kidney stone patients and healthy controls.Discussion: Given the fast, high throughput, and easy operation, our approach brings a new dimension to designing nano-material-based chips for high-performance metabolic analysis and large-scale diagnostic use

    Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker initiation on organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19

    IMPORTANCE Overactivation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may contribute to poor clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Objective To determine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) initiation improves outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ongoing, adaptive platform randomized clinical trial, 721 critically ill and 58 non–critically ill hospitalized adults were randomized to receive an RAS inhibitor or control between March 16, 2021, and February 25, 2022, at 69 sites in 7 countries (final follow-up on June 1, 2022). INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive open-label initiation of an ACE inhibitor (n = 257), ARB (n = 248), ARB in combination with DMX-200 (a chemokine receptor-2 inhibitor; n = 10), or no RAS inhibitor (control; n = 264) for up to 10 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was organ support–free days, a composite of hospital survival and days alive without cardiovascular or respiratory organ support through 21 days. The primary analysis was a bayesian cumulative logistic model. Odds ratios (ORs) greater than 1 represent improved outcomes. RESULTS On February 25, 2022, enrollment was discontinued due to safety concerns. Among 679 critically ill patients with available primary outcome data, the median age was 56 years and 239 participants (35.2%) were women. Median (IQR) organ support–free days among critically ill patients was 10 (–1 to 16) in the ACE inhibitor group (n = 231), 8 (–1 to 17) in the ARB group (n = 217), and 12 (0 to 17) in the control group (n = 231) (median adjusted odds ratios of 0.77 [95% bayesian credible interval, 0.58-1.06] for improvement for ACE inhibitor and 0.76 [95% credible interval, 0.56-1.05] for ARB compared with control). The posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitors and ARBs worsened organ support–free days compared with control were 94.9% and 95.4%, respectively. Hospital survival occurred in 166 of 231 critically ill participants (71.9%) in the ACE inhibitor group, 152 of 217 (70.0%) in the ARB group, and 182 of 231 (78.8%) in the control group (posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitor and ARB worsened hospital survival compared with control were 95.3% and 98.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this trial, among critically ill adults with COVID-19, initiation of an ACE inhibitor or ARB did not improve, and likely worsened, clinical outcomes.     Speech perception deficits by Chinese children with phonological dyslexia

    Findings concerning the relation between dyslexia and speech perception deficits are inconsistent in the literature. This study examined the relation in Chinese children using a more homogeneous sample-children with phonological dyslexia. Two experimental tasks were administered to a group of Chinese children with phonological dyslexia, a group of age-matched control children, and a group of adults. In addition to a categorical perception task, a selective adaptation task was carried out. The results indicated that Chinese children with phonological dyslexia were less consistent than both the child and adult control groups in identifying stimuli within a given phonetic category. Further-more, they did not show any significant adaptation effects in the selective adaptation task even when the adapting stimulus was identical to an endpoint stimulus in the test continuum.     The Spatial Heterogeneity Effect of Green Finance Development on Carbon Emissions

    This paper uses the entropy method to estimate China’s green financial development from four aspects, namely, green credit, green securities, green insurance, and green investment, based on the provincial-level panel data from 2008 to 2019. The spatial Durbin model (SDM) is adopted to estimate the spatial effect of green finance on carbon emissions. We then compare the heterogeneous effect in the South and North of China. The results show that China’s green financial development can significantly reduce carbon emissions, and regional heterogeneities are obvious. In the South of China, this effect from local and adjacent regions is not significant, while on the whole, green finance can significantly reduce carbon emissions; but for Northern China, this effect is not significant; nationally, the development of green finance and carbon emissions in adjacent areas showed an inverted U-shaped relationship. China’s green financial development and carbon emissions also showed an inverted U-shaped relationship. These results suggest that the effect of green finance development on carbon emissions exhibits substantial regional heterogeneity in China. Our paper provides some concrete empirical evidence for policymakers to formulate green financial policies to achieve the double carbon goal in China

    Geometry effect of different PTFE fillers on self-lubricating PF composites: Mechanical and tribological properties

    In order to further improve the performance of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as lubricant additives, PTFE fiber bundles (PTFE-F) were prepared by wet spinning to enhance phenolic resin (PF), and PTFE powders (PTFE-P) were used as a contrast phase. PF-based composites were prepared by hot pressing sintering, and their tribological properties were tested by ball-on-disc friction tests. The results showed that the shore hardness and compressive strength of PF-15 wt% PTFE-F were severally 5.8 % and 58.6 % higher than that of PF-15 wt% PTFE-P. The COF of PF-15 wt% PTFE-F and PF-15 wt% PTFE-P were 0.102 and 0.088, while the wear rates were 2.53 × 10−7mm3/Nm and 1.59 × 10−4 mm3/Nm respectively, with a difference of 628 times. It has been demonstrated that the transfer film formed on the friction pair ball is multi-layer structure, which formed by the physical adhesion of PTFE and the tribochemical reaction between the PTFE and the steel ball. Therefore, the geometry effect idea can be used to fabricate a new kind of self-lubricating materials applied widely in the fields of navigation, aviation, and aerospace
